Chapter 2

Author: Joe Yo
It was not until I saw the piles of cash on the table that I understood. That phone call was nothing more than a bet they made to prove Jocelyn's point.

Marvin casually pulled a thick wad of bills from the pile and stuffed it into the collar of a nearby waiter's shirt.

"Here.

"Get the obedient little puppy a few extra dishes tonight, and open two more bottles of his owner's favorite wine."

The room erupted in laughter.

When Jocelyn noticed how pale and angry I had become, her expression finally darkened.

She stood up, walked over to me, wiped the sweat from my forehead, and led me back to my seat.

"Since you came back, you might as well stay.

"Sit for a while. We will go home together when this is over."

In the past, whenever she coaxed me like that, my anger would melt away almost immediately. This time, however, I suddenly realized that it no longer mattered whether I stayed or left.

Once someone decided to walk away, sitting around a little longer would not change how things ended.

I sat quietly amid the noise and opened my phone.

Our fourth attempt at a wedding was in seven days.

The ceremony was scheduled for the evening. There would be no traditional pickup procession, and we had agreed to leave for the hotel together from our new home.

I booked a one-way flight departing that afternoon.

By the time the drinking session ended, it was already two in the morning.

Instead of taking Marvin home first, Jocelyn brought him straight back to our house.

The moment Marvin walked in, he tossed his bag into the entryway and flopped onto the couch. His dress shoes went flying in opposite directions.

He squinted at me and beckoned with one finger.

"Come here, little puppy.

"Fetch my slippers. Let me enjoy some of the perks of being your owner."

Jocelyn clicked her tongue. Then, she turned to me and gave an order.

"Bobby, put his shoes away and get him a pair of slippers."

I did not move.

"Doesn't he have hands of his own?"

Jocelyn froze for a moment.

All those years, whenever something involved Marvin, I took care of it before she even had to ask twice. She clearly had not expected me to refuse.

Marvin suddenly slapped a hand against his forehead.

"Oh, no! I forgot to feed my kitty!"

He pulled out his phone and opened his house’s security camera app.

"Didn't you say I was like a cat? Well, I’m basically my cat’s servant!

"How could I leave him home alone?"

Jocelyn glanced at the time. "You’re too drunk to drive yourself home." Then she looked at me.

"Bobby, go over there.

"You know the door code. Feed Marvin’s cat, then bring him back with you."

I refused outright.

"No. He insisted on getting that cat, so he should take responsibility for her."

Six months earlier, I had found the injured stray outside my old apartment building. I had carried her to the vet, stayed through her surgery, and contacted a rescue organization to arrange her adoption.

I named her Marshmallow after her snowy-white coat.

When Marvin heard about Marshmallow, he insisted on taking her. Jocelyn had persuaded me to give in.

"Marvin has never really had anything of his own to care for. If he likes the cat, just let him have it."

However, after he took Marshmallow away, his interest lasted barely two weeks. Soon, he could not even remember where he kept the cat food.

"Fine. Don't go, then."

Marvin rolled his eyes in annoyance.

On the security camera feed, Marshmallow was sitting beside her empty food bowl, meowing over and over. She scratched desperately at the cabinet door, her cries growing hoarse from hunger.

My fingers curled into fists as I watched. My heart ached for the little thing, so I still grabbed my jacket and headed out.

When I arrived at Marvin's house, Marshmallow saw me and immediately stumbled into my arms.

I fed her and refilled her water bowl. However, she kept biting my sleeve and refused to let go. In the end, I could not bring myself to leave her behind, so I took her back to the house.

The moment Marvin saw her, he scrambled up from the couch.

"There's my baby! I missed you so much!"

Ignoring the fact that Marshmallow was still trembling, he poked at her belly, then grabbed both her front paws and lifted them into the air.

She struggled wildly, terrified.

"Don't touch her." I reached out to stop him. "She’s already stressed out."

Marvin dodged away with Marshmallow in his arms.

"It's my cat. I can play with it however I want."

He had clearly noticed my wedding plans spread across the coffee table, yet he deliberately laid Marshmallow’s teaser wand on top of the booklet and waved it around.

Startled, she lunged at the toy. Her sharp claws tore across the paper. The seating chart on the top page was slashed in several places, and several invitation samples were knocked onto the floor.

Marvin glanced down at the damage and burst out laughing.

"Wow. I guess cats and dogs really are natural enemies.

"Your stuff is just as much of an eyesore to it as you are."

Jocelyn did not scold him. Instead, she crouched down and picked up the torn wedding plans for me.

"I’ll have someone recreate everything from the original tomorrow."

In the past, even a single dirty mark on that booklet would have upset me for ages. Now, as I looked at the torn pages scattered across the floor, I felt nothing at all.

"Don't bother. I won't be needing them anyway."

Three days later, I returned to the cemetery. It was quiet. All the dog tags and stickers had been removed, and the flower bed that had been trampled was repaired. All the flowers sent by the Porter family had been taken away. The only ones left were the two white hydrangeas I had planted beside my mother's grave. The man who had stood up for me was there, too.His wife, her pregnant belly prominent, held a fresh bouquet of lilies."We never got the chance to properly apologize to your mother for what happened that day," she said. She began to bow, but I quickly asked someone nearby to steady her."You aren't the ones who should be apologizing."The man's delivery truck had finally been saved, and all the outstanding payments had been settled.Jocelyn had issued a public clarification of what had happened, admitting that she had allowed Marvin to demand compensation and suspend the man's delivery assignments. The driver accepted compensation for his lost income and medical ex

Jocelyn was sitting at the far end of the hallway. She had no bodyguards with her, and she made no attempt to come closer. When she saw me, she simply stood and called my name."Bobby."I turned around and went back into the observation room. She did not leave until Marshmallow's condition stabilized. The day after she was discharged, the cemetery staff called me.They told me that the cemetery had been busier than usual over the past two days, with many people visiting the graves of their loved ones. Someone had taken advantage of the crowds to film an insulting video at my mother's grave. Security had already stopped them once.At first, I thought they had called the wrong person. Then, they sent me the video.Silver dog tags covered my mother's headstone. Bags of dog food, chew toys, and a plastic water bowl lay scattered on the ground. Several young people stood in front of the grave, whistling and laughing into the camera."Bobby, your owner's here to take you home!"

Although the missing-person notices had been taken down, the secretly recorded videos had not completely disappeared. One clip showed Janet wheeling me back to my rented house. Inside her carrier, Marshmallow pressed her head against the mesh door and rubbed against my hand.Only then did Marvin remember ‘his’ cat.The next day, I received a call from the local police station.Marvin had reported that I had taken a pet registered in his name without his permission. After confirming the details with me, the officers learned that I had rescued Marshmallow and that we had both cared for her. They contacted both sides to negotiate an agreement on who should keep her. However, Marvin refused to negotiate. He insisted that I return Marshmallow and had his lawyer send over the adoption certificate and microchip registration. His name was indeed on both documents. When I first rescued her, I had already arranged to adopt her through the animal shelter. Then Marvin suddenly announced t

On the third day after I settled into my new city, I received a call from the police.Jocelyn had reported me missing, claiming that I was seriously injured and had not yet recovered, and that she suspected I had disappeared. The officer confirmed my name and ID number, then asked whether anyone had forced me to leave."No. I left of my own free will.""Would you like us to give your address to the person who filed the report?""No, thank you."The officer did not press me. He simply explained that they would inform the person who had reported me that I was safe. After hanging up, I went to my orthopedic follow-up appointment with Janet. When I fell at the cemetery, I had suffered a hairline fracture in my right leg. I would not be able to walk normally for some time.I was waiting outside the examination room when Janet suddenly held a phone out to me."Mr. Shaw, is this you?"On the screen was a missing-person notice.Jocelyn had hired a private investigation agency to pu

As the plane climbed above the clouds, I took one last look at the city below.Jocelyn and I had been in love for seven years. Countless times, I had imagined holding her hand as we boarded a plane to leave this city on our honeymoon.I never imagined that when I finally left for real, I would be wearing an oversized coat, a bandage wrapped around my forehead, and a leg so badly injured that I could barely walk. Before I turned off my phone, the pet transport service sent me a video. Marshmallow was curled up in her secured carrier, resting on my old coat.I watched it for a long time before putting my phone away."From now on, it’s just you and me."Three hours later, the plane landed in a small city in the South.Jocelyn had no friends there, and no one knew who Bobby was supposed to ‘belong to’.As the airport staff wheeled me toward the exit, I used my backup phone to connect to the internet. A dozen emails from the wedding planner flooded my inbox.Jocelyn had refused to

I woke up to the sound of Marvin's voice."Your twenty-first message. Jocelyn, it’s fine if you don't reply. I’ll just wait downstairs."Your twenty-seventh message. If you come back to me, I'll do anything."He dragged out the words dramatically, reading aloud the messages I had sent Jocelyn when I begged her to take me back. The hospital room door was open. Nurses and passing patients could all hear how I had been blocked, how I had stood in the rain waiting for her, and how I had begged her again and again not to call off our wedding. When Marvin saw me open my eyes, he blew a dog whistle gleefully.Jocelyn was sitting on the couch, exhaustion written across her face."Why did you let him see those messages?" I asked. My throat was painfully hoarse. She stood up and poured me some water, her voice even."You've been unconscious for half a day. You woke up once earlier, then fell asleep again."Marvin said that if he read you some things from the past, you might react when
