I stared at the pet ID tag in my palm. Jocelyn Porter's name was engraved across its surface. Humiliation closed around my throat like an invisible hand, leaving me barely able to breathe.

"Here, boy! Come here!"

Someone in the private room whistled, calling to me as if I were a well-trained pet. I instinctively looked up, and the room erupted in laughter.

"Ha! He actually looked!"

"Jocelyn, you really have trained him well. One little call, and he responds!"

Someone even held out a hand toward me, deliberately imitating a dog trainer.

"Bobby, come on. Shake!"

The smile vanished from Jocelyn's face. She set her wine glass down hard and swept an icy gaze across the room.

"Enough.

"Just because I joked about him doesn't mean the rest of you get to use him for your entertainment."

Everyone fell silent at once.

Jocelyn took my hand and softened her voice.

"They’ve had too much to drink. Don't take it personally."

Marvin Smith, however, snorted with laughter. "Everyone’s just joking around, Bobby. Why are you so worked up?

"What's wrong with being a dog? Dogs are loyal.

"Even if their owners kick them around, all it takes is one little wave, and they come running back, tails wagging."

Jocelyn frowned.

"Marvin, enough."

"Fine, fine. I'll stop." He leaned back against the couch and raised both hands with an innocent smile, though no remorse showed on his face.

I pulled my hand away sharply. One thought filled my mind: I had to get out of here.

Someone called my name behind me, but I kept walking.

I was twenty when I met Jocelyn. My mother had just died.

My father had passed away years earlier, so when it came time to handle my mother's funeral arrangements, I had no one to turn to for advice. Jocelyn stayed by my side through every form and every arrangement.

During the three months I kept waking up in the middle of the night, she answered my calls again and again.

Marvin, meanwhile, had been her childhood sweetheart and lifelong companion.

His father had died saving Jocelyn's father.

Even after Jocelyn took over her family's company, she kept Marvin by her side. She said the Smith family had once saved the Porters, and that debt of gratitude could never be forgotten.

Marvin was two years younger than she was. No matter how outrageous his behavior became, Jocelyn always had the same excuse.

"I've always thought of him as a little brother."

Marvin had already ruined our wedding three times.

The first time, he hid our wedding rings. He refused to return them until most of the guests had left.

The second time, he put on my wedding tuxedo before the ceremony and posed for pictures, asking Jocelyn, "Do I look like your husband?"

I demanded that he take it off, but she accused me of humiliating him in front of everyone. Then she abandoned our guests and left with him.

The third time, just before the ceremony, Marvin burst into tears and claimed he had dreamed about his father. He said he could not bear the thought of watching Jocelyn marry someone else.

Every time, Jocelyn would scowl and tell him to stop acting like a child. However, whenever Marvin really kicked up a fuss, she would turn to me and try to talk me down.

"You’re the one who’ll spend the rest of your life with me. What’s the harm in letting him have his way just this once?"

Our wedding was postponed again and again.

I had just left when my phone rang. Marvin's voice came through the line, frantic and almost shrill.

"Bobby, get back here! Now!

"Jocelyn suddenly got a stomachache. She just threw up blood! Where’s her medication?"

I did not even have time to question whether he was telling the truth. My body reacted before I could think.

After all those years, worrying about Jocelyn had become second nature.

I ran all the way back. By the time I shoved open the private room door, my fingers were trembling.

"Jocelyn!"

Everyone was sitting comfortably in the same seats as before, smiling as they looked at me.

Jocelyn was lounging on the couch. When she saw me return, she gave a satisfied nod.

After a brief silence, the entire room burst into laughter.

"Marvin wins!"

"Eleven minutes! Faster than an ambulance!"

"Jocelyn called it! Her dog could run to the other side of the world, but all his owner has to do is call, and he comes right back!"

I froze in the doorway.

Only then did I finally understand. They had been waiting for this moment all along, eager to see me make a fool of myself.

I had actually come running back, just as they expected.

Three days later, I returned to the cemetery. It was quiet. All the dog tags and stickers had been removed, and the flower bed that had been trampled was repaired. All the flowers sent by the Porter family had been taken away. The only ones left were the two white hydrangeas I had planted beside my mother's grave. The man who had stood up for me was there, too.His wife, her pregnant belly prominent, held a fresh bouquet of lilies."We never got the chance to properly apologize to your mother for what happened that day," she said. She began to bow, but I quickly asked someone nearby to steady her."You aren't the ones who should be apologizing."The man's delivery truck had finally been saved, and all the outstanding payments had been settled.Jocelyn had issued a public clarification of what had happened, admitting that she had allowed Marvin to demand compensation and suspend the man's delivery assignments. The driver accepted compensation for his lost income and medical ex

Jocelyn was sitting at the far end of the hallway. She had no bodyguards with her, and she made no attempt to come closer. When she saw me, she simply stood and called my name."Bobby."I turned around and went back into the observation room. She did not leave until Marshmallow's condition stabilized. The day after she was discharged, the cemetery staff called me.They told me that the cemetery had been busier than usual over the past two days, with many people visiting the graves of their loved ones. Someone had taken advantage of the crowds to film an insulting video at my mother's grave. Security had already stopped them once.At first, I thought they had called the wrong person. Then, they sent me the video.Silver dog tags covered my mother's headstone. Bags of dog food, chew toys, and a plastic water bowl lay scattered on the ground. Several young people stood in front of the grave, whistling and laughing into the camera."Bobby, your owner's here to take you home!"

Although the missing-person notices had been taken down, the secretly recorded videos had not completely disappeared. One clip showed Janet wheeling me back to my rented house. Inside her carrier, Marshmallow pressed her head against the mesh door and rubbed against my hand.Only then did Marvin remember ‘his’ cat.The next day, I received a call from the local police station.Marvin had reported that I had taken a pet registered in his name without his permission. After confirming the details with me, the officers learned that I had rescued Marshmallow and that we had both cared for her. They contacted both sides to negotiate an agreement on who should keep her. However, Marvin refused to negotiate. He insisted that I return Marshmallow and had his lawyer send over the adoption certificate and microchip registration. His name was indeed on both documents. When I first rescued her, I had already arranged to adopt her through the animal shelter. Then Marvin suddenly announced t

On the third day after I settled into my new city, I received a call from the police.Jocelyn had reported me missing, claiming that I was seriously injured and had not yet recovered, and that she suspected I had disappeared. The officer confirmed my name and ID number, then asked whether anyone had forced me to leave."No. I left of my own free will.""Would you like us to give your address to the person who filed the report?""No, thank you."The officer did not press me. He simply explained that they would inform the person who had reported me that I was safe. After hanging up, I went to my orthopedic follow-up appointment with Janet. When I fell at the cemetery, I had suffered a hairline fracture in my right leg. I would not be able to walk normally for some time.I was waiting outside the examination room when Janet suddenly held a phone out to me."Mr. Shaw, is this you?"On the screen was a missing-person notice.Jocelyn had hired a private investigation agency to pu

As the plane climbed above the clouds, I took one last look at the city below.Jocelyn and I had been in love for seven years. Countless times, I had imagined holding her hand as we boarded a plane to leave this city on our honeymoon.I never imagined that when I finally left for real, I would be wearing an oversized coat, a bandage wrapped around my forehead, and a leg so badly injured that I could barely walk. Before I turned off my phone, the pet transport service sent me a video. Marshmallow was curled up in her secured carrier, resting on my old coat.I watched it for a long time before putting my phone away."From now on, it’s just you and me."Three hours later, the plane landed in a small city in the South.Jocelyn had no friends there, and no one knew who Bobby was supposed to ‘belong to’.As the airport staff wheeled me toward the exit, I used my backup phone to connect to the internet. A dozen emails from the wedding planner flooded my inbox.Jocelyn had refused to

I woke up to the sound of Marvin's voice."Your twenty-first message. Jocelyn, it’s fine if you don't reply. I’ll just wait downstairs."Your twenty-seventh message. If you come back to me, I'll do anything."He dragged out the words dramatically, reading aloud the messages I had sent Jocelyn when I begged her to take me back. The hospital room door was open. Nurses and passing patients could all hear how I had been blocked, how I had stood in the rain waiting for her, and how I had begged her again and again not to call off our wedding. When Marvin saw me open my eyes, he blew a dog whistle gleefully.Jocelyn was sitting on the couch, exhaustion written across her face."Why did you let him see those messages?" I asked. My throat was painfully hoarse. She stood up and poured me some water, her voice even."You've been unconscious for half a day. You woke up once earlier, then fell asleep again."Marvin said that if he read you some things from the past, you might react when
