Chapter 5

Autor: Willow Spring
I said it from the start—I'm the worst one.

Or maybe just weak. Pathetic.

Seven years with Adrian. Seven years of that cold face, plus his friends constantly coming at me.

It wore me down.

Out of all of them, Zane was the worst.

He used to look down on me. Mock me. Tear me apart in public more times than I could count.

So I got close to him on purpose.

Played soft. Played small.

Then I pulled him in, little by little—until he fell.

My plan was simple—cut him off the second I divorced Adrian.

But Zane caught on.

So I found a younger, broke college kid and kept it platonic.

When Zane found out, he looked me up and down and sneered. "You're just a bad girl playing sweet. You really think you can compare to Celine? Adrian must be blind to marry you."

I didn't deny it.

If I could scheme my way into marrying Adrian, what did that make me?

The hurt, the obedience, the way I never fought back—it was all an act.

I thought he'd tell Adrian.

He didn't. He used it.

He stared me down, jaw tight. "If you don't want to get exposed, cut that college kid off and stay with me. A woman like you's only good for being played with. You need to be taught a lesson. Once Celine's back, you're out anyway. And that kid—what's so great about him? You really like him? Hm?"

I dropped the act.

Stepped back. Crossed my arms. Smiled.

"Fine. Then bring Celine back. If Adrian asks for a divorce, I'll say yes."

He paused.

Then, after a beat, his voice went rough with excitement. "Deal."

That night, when Zane lit up the group chat about Celine and Adrian sat on the balcony smoking all night, I'd already made up my mind.

I loved Adrian. Desperately.

But seven years of giving everything and getting nothing back—while he still loved Celine—I was done.

Leaving would be a relief for both of us.

I'd finally be free.

So I played along—half real, half fake. Acted understanding. Swallowed everything.

I just hoped that after seven years of taking care of him, Adrian would give me a decent settlement.

So I waited for him to accept Celine and push me aside.

He stayed cold. Fine. I'd take what I was owed. Then we'd be even.

Before the divorce, I couldn't let him see I was already over him.

Now, under Zane's stare, I didn't remember ever agreeing to be with him after the divorce.

But I still played weak and forced it out. "Okay."

He looked satisfied and finally stepped back, giving me space.

I barely had time to breathe before Adrian's voice cut in, low and cold.

"Okay? Okay what?"

Adrian was wrecked—fractures, internal bleeding. He stayed in the ICU a full week before he stabilized.Celine got hurt too, but nothing serious. Mostly shock—and the legal mess waiting for her.Intentional assault was enough to ruin her.During that time, I moved back into Adrian's place. Not as Mrs. Sandford. Just... a caretaker. His parents were too old to handle it.His staff could run the business, but they couldn't take care of him.I handled everything—hospital stuff, police, the company.I stayed by his bed, machines beeping around him. Watched him drift in and out, push through the pain, fight through rehab. When he woke and saw me, something flickered in his eyes.He started relying on me. When he was awake, his eyes tracked me everywhere. He spoke carefully. He flinched at the nurses, pulled back fast—only letting me near.Like, even broken like this, he was clumsily trying to hold on to something.Sometimes he'd look at me, eyes heavy with regret, and rasp, "Em

I thought I'd made everything clear.I was wrong.I underestimated Celine—and overestimated Adrian's ability to deal with the past. While I was lining up a lawyer and getting ready to file, Celine asked to meet.I didn't want to go. But her voice sounded wrecked. She said she had things to tell me about Adrian—things she needed to say to finally let go.I hesitated. Again and again. In the end, I went.Maybe I needed a real ending too.We met at a quiet café.Celine looked worn down. The glow was gone—just resentment left. She skipped the small talk. "Emily, I know I lost. Adrian... he chose you."I stayed quiet. My calm got under her skin. Her voice jumped. "But I don't get it! How am I worse than you? We had years together. That means nothing just because you showed up? Do you know he came to see me yesterday? He asked what you like! He wanted tips on winning you back! What a joke!"Something stung—but not for Adrian. For the way she still couldn't let go.And for that

After that breakdown, I got sick. The fever kept spiking. I drifted in and out.Adrian stopped going to work. He stayed home, called a doctor, brought me water and meds—quiet, stubborn, playing the part of a husband.I didn't speak to him.Every time we locked eyes, there was nothing left. Just cold distance. Final. When I finally got out of bed, I set the divorce papers on his desk."Sign it, Adrian. I listed the assets. I'm only taking what's mine. Not a cent more. Think of these seven years as a lesson I paid for."My voice came out rough, but steady. He stared at the papers, his face darkening. His hand came up like he was about to rip them."You can tear it," I said, calm. "I'll print another copy. If you won't sign, I'll file. Once it hits court, it won't look good."His hand froze midair. He looked at me like he didn't recognize me.Guess he never thought the girl who used to follow him would push him away this clean."Emily, we—""There's nothing left to say."I t

After that night, things between Adrian and me went ice-cold.More like—I cut him off completely. He still left early, came back late. Sometimes he tried to talk. I didn't. I did what I had to, stayed quiet, then shut myself in the guest room. His clothes carried perfume—sometimes light, sometimes overwhelming.I didn't care anymore.Zane showed up a few more times. Each visit, he sounded more on edge."Emily, are you messing with me? Adrian and Celine are basically a done deal. Why haven't you made a move? That college kid hit you up again? Don't make me get him kicked out. Just give me a date. When are you filing for divorce?"I looked at him—tense, possessive—and almost laughed.I didn't play along. "If you're so capable, tell Celine to try harder. Make Adrian come to me and ask for the divorce. Otherwise, don't bring it up."I was done letting them push me around.***Things shifted on a weekend morning.I got up early to clean the guest room, planning to pack some stuf

I don't even remember how I got back to that quiet house. The alcohol churned with the nausea. I barely made it to the bathroom before throwing up, over and over, until I could hardly stand.Tears slipped out without warning—not because he left, but because of the humiliation. The kind that sinks deep and won't let go.He saw it. He could've asked. Could've gotten mad.Instead, he picked the cruelest option.Indifference.And just like that, I knew who mattered to him.***My phone rang.Tyler.He sounded like he had to work up the nerve. "Millie... are you okay? About that message earlier—""I'm fine."I cut him off, voice rough. "Don't... contact me again."I hung up before he could say anything. Then I turned my phone off.Everything about this world felt exhausting.I curled up on the couch. No idea how much time passed before I heard the door open.Adrian came back, reeking of alcohol. He stumbled in, tie loose, eyes unfocused—messy in a way I almost never saw.H

That line—'What trick are you trying to pull this time?'—hit like ice, slicing through the mask I was barely holding together... and whatever hope I had left. The car went dead silent. Thick. Suffocating.I stared at his stiff profile and felt it all drain out of me. I didn't even have it in me to argue.Seven years. No matter what I did, he always thought I had an angle. My love was "clingy." My sacrifices? Expected. And now me walking away? Just another scheme.I turned to the window, neon lights smearing past. My voice came out soft, almost a sigh. "Think whatever you want."The next few days went weirdly calm. Neither of us brought it up again.Celine started popping up everywhere Adrian went, loud and obvious. Her socials were full of suggestive reels. His friends kept hyping his "second chance romance" with her in the group chat. When they mentioned me, it was all mockery.I kept playing the perfect trad wife.Making breakfast. Running the house.Just... quieter.Ad
