My heart pounded so violently it made my chest ache. I curled in on myself, the sound of automatic fire ripping through the air outside. I gasped as glass cracked—spiderweb fractures forming on the side window—but it held.

“Switch to route C. Now,” Nathaniel barked. The convoy veered off onto a narrow service road. I was thrown sideways against the seatbelt.

I dared a glance up through the back window. The van was still chasing—until two of our trailing SUVs braked hard and boxed it in. A violent crash followed. Metal shrieked. The van flipped, landed hard, and didn’t move again.

“Clear the threat,” Nathaniel barked. His tone never rose. He didn’t even blink. “Get us the hell out of here,”

The driver swerved hard, tires screeching as we veered off to a side road. My body slammed against the seatbelt; breath knocked from my lungs. Behind us, the guards returned fire. Through the tinted glass, I caught flashes—guns raised, bodies moving, someone yelling.

The west wing was tucked away, slightly more secluded than the rest of the estate. Sylvia gestured down a hallway of tall white doors with brass handles. She said nothing more, just gestured toward the last door at the far end.“This is your room,” she said, pausing at the entrance. “It was Sebastian’s.”I blinked, startled, but she had already pushed the door open and stepped aside, letting me walk in first. The room was large—almost too large—with high ceilings and soft golden lighting. A plush rug stretched across the floor, and an elegant furniture lined the walls. Two beds occupied opposite sides of the room. One was made with navy sheets and darker accents, the other with ivory linens and a softer design.Sylvia pointed to the right bed. “That one’s yours.”I nodded, my fingers tightening around the edge of my dress. She glanced around once, then gave a curt nod. “You can rest now.”Without another word, she left, the doo

Her heels clicked along the marble floors as she continued. “I stay on the east wing. My personal staff and quarters are there. Yours, of course, are with Sebastian on the west wing.”I nodded, pretending to admire a sculpture in the hallway just so I wouldn’t have to meet her eyes. I am sure she has noticed it but said nothing. We continued walking through the corridor.“The Kingston Estate,” Sylvia began smoothly, “has been in our family for nearly a century. Built by Sebastian’s great-great-grandfather, Charles Kingston, during the postwar. He was a shipping magnate who had a vision for legacy—something larger than life, something no one could ignore.”Her hand gestured toward the sprawling garden visible through the tall arched windows. “It began as a manor house. But every generation added more. The east wing was Sebastian’s grandfather’s contribution. My deceased husband expanded the west.”I murmured something polite, something like “It’s beautiful,” because I knew she expected

The SUV curved through a long, winding driveway lined with tall cypress trees, their shadows stretching over the pavement. As we emerged from the bend, the Kingston estate came into full view—and for a moment, I forgot to breathe. It was a modern interpretation of a French château, complete with high arched windows, trimmed gardens, and a looming stone façade softened by ivy creeping along the corners. Grand without being gaudy. The car slowed before a grand staircase. Guards were stationed on either side, standing still. The front door opened before we even stepped out.Sylvia Kingston appeared. Today she wore a soft cream dress cinched at the waist with a pearl belt, her hair swept into its usual chignon, not a strand out of place. Her heels clicked softly as she descended the steps.“Lorelie, darling,” she greeted, her voice smooth as silk. “I’m so relieved you’re safe. A shootout on your first day—how dramatic.” Her tone held not worry, but… amusement. She leaned in, brushing a ki

Lorelie’s POVThe next morning arrived faster than I wanted. I stood in front of the mirror, my reflection unfamiliar.I wore a baby pink-colored, high-neck midi dress, like something out of a curated fashion catalogue. My blonde hair was pinned half-up in soft waves, and minimal makeup covered the fatigue under my eyes. I looked like a mannequin. My eyes, however, gave me away—tired.I was adjusting the silver stud earring on my left lobe when the door creaked open behind me.“Leon. Adam. Escort her down,” Sebastian said flatly.I turned to face him, startled. “Escort me where?”He didn’t answer immediately, only checked his watch as if I was taking too long.“You’re going home,” he said abruptly, already moving toward the door.I blinked. “Home?”“Yeah. Our house,” he replied flatly, not even glancing back at me.The realization hit me a beat later, sinking like a stone in my chest. “With you?” I asked slowly, the words tasting strange in my mouth.Sebastian’s eyes flicked toward me

“I think Ms. Lorelie is different from her family” Connor suddenly said with a shrug.“I don’t trust her,” I said flatly, tossing the phone back to Connor. “Her father could’ve ordered her to get close to me. Play the obedient wife until she finds what they need.”Leon crossed his arms. “You think she knows?”“I think she knows something. Or she will. And if she doesn’t… I’ll make sure she does.”I glanced toward the locked bedroom door, the silence pressing behind it.“Let’s see how long she can keep playing innocent. She’s either buried in it… or being buried by them. Either way,” I said, coldly, “she's a Montgomery. And I don't trust anything with that name.”Connor smirked, tapping his fingers on the table. “So now you’re a husband. Who knew?”“I’m whatever I need to be to bring that family down.”Leon flicked open the silver lighter with a snap. The flame danced briefly before I nodded. He held the flame under the edge of the letter until the paper curled and blackened, disintegr
