Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
It wasn't until the next day that we saw news about Kai and Lex again.

By then, Rachel and I had already slipped away to another island. We were lounging in our villa, sipping wine and wearing face masks as we scrolled through the headlines.

On-screen, Lex looked grim, while Kai's eyes were visibly red. The two sat side by side in a car.

A reporter, speaking into the camera, delivered the latest update.

"Breaking news: Renowned designer Carrie Wunder and her sister Rachel Wunder have gone missing after a tragic accident while vacationing on a seaside island. Their whereabouts remain unknown. Both of their husbands, Huxley Ventures CEO, Kai Huxley, and Rangoon Ventures Chairman, Lex Rangoon, are reportedly en route to the island and will personally join the search efforts."

Rachel scoffed.

"Hmph. Too little, too late. If they had the guts to cheat, they should've expected we'd leave eventually."

I nodded in agreement. A swipe of my finger brought up the next headline.

[Shocking: Rangoon Ventures Chairman, Lex Rangoon, Suspected of Cheating. Mistress Caught in Public with Alleged Lovechild!]

It was a video posted by a gossip account. In the clip, Lex stood beside a young woman, holding hands with a little girl.

The video had been posted a week earlier, but now it was suddenly going viral.

I opened the comments. The top one caught my eye.

[Am I the only one who finds this way too coincidental? The lovechild scandal breaks, and now his wife's gone missing?]

Replies flooded in beneath it.

[Good point. Maybe marrying into a rich family isn't all it's cracked up to be.]

[Are we doing conspiracy theories now? Since when are gossip accounts reliable?]

The comment section was ablaze with speculation, drama, and even the occasional post about beach safety.

Seeing Rachel's expression darken, I turned off the screen.

She stared blankly at the blacked-out phone, then downed an entire glass of wine in one go. Her face was slightly flushed, and her eyes were tinged with sorrow.

After a long pause, she looked at me sadly. "Carrie… how did things end up like this?"

I sighed and reached over to gently stroke her hair.

"Maybe… it's just the flaw at the core of men," I said softly.

Rachel was quiet for a few seconds, then buried her face in my arms.

"Carrie, Lex was so good at acting. Even now, part of me still feels hurt. I even thought… he really loved me."

Her muffled voice tugged at my heart.

I thought of that call to Kai, and how it was Briana who had answered. Disgust rose in my chest. These two men couldn't be more despicable.

"Rachel," I said, "they're just men. Not worth our tears. From now on, let's just enjoy our vacation. All these years of designing have earned me enough to live lavishly for the next thirty. Are you really going to let some cheating man ruin your mood?"

I knew Rachel well. She was a shameless little money-grubber to the core.

But back then, she had chosen to be with Lex when he had nothing—not a cent to his name, cast out by his family.

In their worst days, they survived on two plain meals a day, often just stale bread. She never once complained.

Then Lex founded Rangoon Ventures, rising step by step, eventually devouring his family's empire. He became a man of status, admired and envied.

And just when things had finally settled… a woman and lovechild appeared out of nowhere, like a knife twisted into Rachel's heart, thrown to the ground and stomped on for good measure.

Fortunately, she and I had the strength and the means to walk away.

The days that followed were peaceful. We traveled from place to place, as if all our troubles had been washed away by the sea.

Every now and then, though, a headline would pop up. Kai and Lex were still searching for us.

From the initial emergency rescue to a full-blown global search, it seemed neither guy had any intention of giving up.

One of them even issued a statement. "As long as they remain missing, I won't stop searching. Not for a single day."

This wasn't what I'd expected at all.

With other women by their side, they should've moved on long ago. So what was this dramatic performance now supposed to mean?

Three months later, while I was home working on a design draft, Kai suddenly returned, though he should've been at the office. At first, I thought he was doing another one of his surprise home checks to make sure I hadn't vanished again.Ever since the last time I left, Kai had grown unusually clingy.Back when he worked at the company, he used to send me a barrage of messages during his breaks. I'd reply when I saw them, and even if I responded late, he wouldn't mind. He'd just keep spamming me with cute, clingy stickers. But now, things were different. His messages came more frequently, and if I didn't reply quickly enough, he'd come rushing home.I still remembered the first time he barged into my studio. I looked up in shock and asked if something had happened. He walked straight over and pulled me into a tight embrace."You didn't respond… I thought you'd left again."That's when I realized just how deeply my disappearing act had traumatized him.So after that, I simply s

At last, everything made sense. When that woman revealed her identity, it was both unexpected and somehow within reason.Lex's father, Henry Rangoon, was a scumbag through and through. One day, a mistress came to provoke her at home and ended up pushing her down the stairs. She suffered severe head trauma. After three days in the ICU, she passed away.At the time, Lex was away at university in another city. His father concealed everything from him and protected the mistress. When Lex returned and learned the truth, he tried to report the incident to the police. Instead, Henry threw him out and cut off all financial support. The reason? The mistress was pregnant, and rumor had it the child was a boy.Lex endured in silence for years. Eventually, he turned the tide. Not only did he start his own company, he went on to acquire the original Rangoon Ventures.

After our openly honest conversation, every last trace of doubt in my heart finally vanished. As I looked at Kai, I suddenly noticed how much weight he'd lost.I'd acted too impulsively. Faking my death might have seemed like a bold move, but the pain I'd caused him was far too great. My eyes welled with tears, and I threw myself into his arms."Kai… I'm so sorry."This time, Kai completely broke down. The powerful CEO of the Huxley Ventures was now sobbing like a child. "Carrie, I was so scared… I can't believe you didn't trust me…"He was twenty-six this year, and seeing him cry like this was both heartbreaking and—if I'm honest—a little funny. But I still ached for him. From the day we met, I'd known he was a soft-hearted crybaby. And this time, it really was my fault. I had misunderstood him and then gone to such an extreme. It must have shattered him.I sat up, and he instinctively adjusted his position, nestling his head into the crook of my neck.Looking at his red nose

Rachel was swayed by my words, and the two of us decided to return to the courtyard house. The moment we stood up from the bench, we noticed several bodyguards following close behind. It wasn't hard to guess who had sent them. From a distance, we could already see the two men standing side by side at the courtyard gate. Briana was nowhere to be seen.As soon as they caught sight of us, both of their eyes lit up.Rachel, still sulking, ignored Lex and brushed past him into the house, firmly shutting the door behind her to keep him out.Kai looked at me with a pleading expression, silently begging for forgiveness.Unfortunately, even though I was willing to believe him, Briana's unexpected appearance had left a lingering shadow in my heart."We'll return to Laguna City tomorrow. Whatever needs to be said can wait till then."With that, I stepped inside, leaving him standing in the courtyard.Early the next morning, I boarded the Huxley family's private jet with a weary face.K

Who was that?I turned toward the voice.Standing at the gate of the courtyard was Briana, dressed in a flowing white dress with flawless makeup, waving at us with a bright smile. What was she doing here?I instinctively glanced at Kai. His expression mirrored my surprise.I hadn't bothered to close the gate when we entered earlier. Briana walked in as if she belonged here, completely at ease. She came to stand beside me, her face full of innocent concern as she looked toward Kai."Kai, so this is why you rushed out of the hotel. You spotted Carrie! You told me that day she was here, but I didn't believe you. So it turns out Carrie was just throwing a tantrum all along."Then she turned to me, her eyes brimming with sympathy."Carrie, Kai has been looking everywhere for you. You've been far too willful this time. He's been juggling work while searching for you every day. It breaks my heart just watching him."Her words were packed with insinuation, and my brows knitted in fru

His expression was firm, and not at all like someone lying.Strangely, I began to doubt my own judgment.I looked at him, suspicion still lingering in my eyes."Are you just refusing to admit it? You brought Briana into the company and even bought her a luxury car."And Lex—he has a four-year-old illegitimate daughter. That's longer than he's even been married to Rachel. Neither of you are any good!"My words seemed to catch Kai off guard. He choked for a moment, his reply stammering."N-No! It's not like that, Carrie! What gave you that idea? About Briana? And about an illegitimate daughter?"His reaction looked a lot like guilt, but after all these years, I knew him better than anyone.Kai in public and Kai in private were like two different people.Out there, he was the successful young CEO, polished and charming. But behind closed doors, he liked to act spoiled around me—so much so that whenever I questioned him, he'd get flustered and start stammering. He couldn't lie to
