Chapter 2 Officially Over

作者: Hedgebud
I had looked forward to that day. But now, there was nothing for me to look forward to now, was there?

Still, I could afford to buy fireworks with my own money. I just hoped Rachel wouldn't regret her decision when she got her memories back.

When I got home, I told my parents that Rachel mentioned breaking off the engagement.

My father expressed his disagreement. "You and Rachel should know better. Breaking off the engagement could cause a domino effect throughout our families' collaborations. Stop messing around!"

I inhaled deeply and explained, "Rachel is the one who insisted on breaking things off. Plus, our family has never been one to shake on a bad deal. It's not too late to call it quits now."

My father fell silent. His silence dragged on for so long that my mother couldn't help but remark, "Nicholas is the victim here! You have no reason to hesitate here. Besides, Nicholas has no trouble finding a wife.

"I'm sure we'll be able to find another girl for him even after the wedding's off! I'm certain we'll be able to find a better match for him, one that's far better than Rachel!"

I knew I could always trust my mother to persuade my father to see things our way. In the end, my father caved.

"Okay. I'll drop by Evans Residence with your mother to call off the engagement."

However, Rachel's parents arrived at our house with their unruly daughter in tow before we could drop by.

Rachel, who had just been discharged from the hospital, looked somewhat pale. From the looks of things, she seemed to be here to offer a humble apology. Still, I could tell that she wasn't all that sincere.

Her face was blank when she saw me. I didn't say anything, choosing to play the silent sentinel as I sat quietly next to my mother.

Rachel's mother, Madison Gray, smiled as she broke the ice, saying, "Nicholas and Rachel have been dating for three years, and I've been there for most of their romantic milestones.

"Rachel might not remember how deeply in love they were for the past three years due to head trauma, but we certainly do!"

Rachel's father, Timothy Evans, nodded repeatedly and echoed, "That's right. Nicholas is the only son-in-law we will ever acknowledge." After that, he looked at Rachel and commanded, "Rachel, get over here and apologize!"

Rachel snapped angrily, "Mom, Dad, I've told you! I won't marry him! Jordan is the one I love!"

"You're an absolute disgrace, is what you are!" Timothy roared and slapped her across the face, but I could tell it was just a bluff.

After all, Rachel's cheek didn't even swell after that slap. Rachel was also well aware that Timothy was putting on an act. Therefore, she couldn't help but get angry. "Do what you want, but I will never apologize!"

She glared at me and hissed, "Nicholas, stop wasting your efforts. Let's part ways on good terms!"

Timothy was livid. "Rachel, will your nonsense only cease after I die?"

I sneered at his pitiful acting.

"Mr. Evans, let's just forget about it. You can't force something like this, so it's better for us to end the engagement now rather than drag this on for months," I urged before turning to Rachel. "Rachel, I just hope you won't pester me after we break up."

Rachel raised her chin, looking as smug and proud as always. "I won't," she replied curtly.

After that, she shot me a meaningful look, probably thinking I was playing hard to get.

Sadly for her, I genuinely didn't want to waste my breath on someone like her.

To me, it was better to just get the pain over with now.

My father interjected before Timothy could say anything else. He raised his hand and said, "It's settled, then. Let's call off the engagement!"

When Madison heard that, she couldn't help but sigh in resignation as she took my hand. "Although things didn't work out between the both of you, I'm sure you two can still be friends. You should visit each other more often in the future."

I smiled politely, but said nothing. Instead of agreeing with Madison, I swore to myself that I would never be friends with Rachel, especially since things had ended on such a rotten note.

The Evans family's businesses overlapped with ours. If it weren't for my engagement to Rachel, our families would have been butting heads with each other ages ago.

Now that our engagement was over, the rivalry between our families could no longer be swept under the rug.

Soon after Timothy and Madison left, Rachel made her relationship official.

She took a photo with Jordan and posted it on her Twitter.

Her post caused an uproar among the netizens. Comments started flooding in one after another.

'Holy shit! Rachel, are you for real?!'

'Impressive!'

'Silently getting back with your first love as soon as he's back, huh? Talk about a classic, tell me you're head over heels for your first love without actually telling me that!'

'What about Nicholas?' asked one of our mutual friends.

'It's just a breakup. He can just find someone else,' replied Rachel.

I chuckled and remarked lightly, "She really is something."

When I refreshed the feed again, I realized that her Twitter post was gone from my timeline. That was when I knew she had blocked me.

'She learned to set boundaries with the opposite sex so quickly? Rachel sure is Jordan's obedient puppy.'

I couldn't help but burst into another round of laughter as I thought of that. After the breakup, my best friend, Benjamin Gardner, asked me to hang out. He was worried that I would do something stupid after the breakup.

He practically dragged me out, rendering me both amused and speechless.

When Rachel woke up, she kept asking to see me. So, Tiffany and I went to visit her.Rachel's eyes immediately welled up in tears when she saw our laced fingers. "Nicholas, how could you be with her?""Rachel, you've regained your memories?" I asked."It's still pretty vague, but I remember you," she replied. "The doctor has already told me that my previous preconceptions were faulty due to my temporary amnesia after the accident. I've lost the days we spent together, but I remember them now. Can we get back together?"I simply looked at her in silence. Before Rachel could speak again, Tiffany shook her head and expressed her vehement disagreement. "Not a chance!""You were the one who insisted on breaking up with me back then. You even called Jordan the moment you woke up. Yet, you're now asking me to take you back after you've regained your memories? Rachel, are you insane?" I chimed in.Rachel broke down. "No! That's not true. No! Nicholas, you—""Of course, it's true!" I col

Rachel called me, but I had blocked her long ago. So, she had no choice but to camp outside my house. Fortunately, my father chased her away, refusing to let her see me.She went to my company and waited for me to leave work. When I saw her approach, I instinctively turned to leave. However, Rachel immediately rushed over. "Nicholas!" she shouted.I turned to look at her and asked coldly, "What is it now? Did you remember something?""I've been receiving treatment, but I still can't remember anything. You could've just ignored what happened that day. So, why did you make that post?""Why? I told you that I'd make you two pay, didn't I? I also told you that I'm not the kind of person who would just stand around and take it! I refuse! Besides, it was Jordan who started it," I retorted hotly."Can you spare him? Jordan didn't mean it."I was completely mind-blown. I couldn't believe she had the gall to make such a request of me, especially after what Jordan had done. Frankly, there

Tiffany didn't deny it. "Yes. The Evans family's new product was launched ahead of schedule. Since they have always been your rivals, we can't just sit back and do nothing now that they've seized the market ahead of time."I immediately understood what she was getting at. Still, I didn't expect her to have noticed the issue as well.Needless to say, my parents were very pleased with Tiffany. When I had been dating Rachel, they always maintained a formal and detached attitude whenever she came over. Yet, they were very warm and welcoming toward Tiffany. When Tiffany was about to leave, I escorted her to her car and asked curiously, "What did you and my father talk about? Don't tell me that you guys were just talking shop.""Mr. Shaw said that you're headstrong and bossy. He also told me to deal with you properly and that I can come back here and report to him if I suffer any grievances.""Since when have I made you suffer?" I voiced my dissatisfaction."Yes, you haven't. Still, I'

Jordan's face immediately turned red and swollen."I've wanted to do this for a long time!" I growled. "You deserve to be punched for talking behind my back! This is what I'm like. I, Nicholas Shaw, am no doormat!"I'll make sure that you'll pay the price of falsely accusing me! Benjamin did the right thing by punching you. I know for a fact that he wouldn't have gotten so worked up if you hadn't run your mouth like a little bitch."A word of advice? Going against us won't do you any good."Then, I turned to Rachel and snarled. "As for you, Rachel!"I raised my hand and was about to hit her when she grabbed my wrist. "What's the matter? You're thinking of hitting me, too?"I promptly slapped her across the face with my other hand."And what of it?" I smirked at her meanly. "You two really do deserve each other. Mess with me again, and we'll see just how well it goes for you!"Then, I ignored Jordan's resentful glare as I dragged Benjamin away.Benjamin gave me a thumbs up and

There were many photos of us in the study. I tore them up and threw them into the trash can one after another. There was also my love diary with Rachel, which recorded everything from the very beginning. I had written several anecdotes in there, and we used to joke about them together. The thick, heavy notebook was filled to the brim with our happiest moments. Each word written in it was full of love. However, I tore the notebook anyway, putting the papers into the shredder to destroy them all. I also got rid of the trash while I was at it.Then, I hired a cleaning service crew to clean the apartment inside and out.The knot in my heart eased as I cleaned out my apartment. Eventually, I could finally say that I was over Rachel. She was just suffering from amnesia, and the doctor had made it clear that she could regain her memories. Yet, she refused to do so.It was as if she were ashamed to be with me.Since Rachel had decided to tear our relationship apart, there was no need f

My body moved according to her rhythm before darkness welcomed me. When I finally got up, the sun was already high in the sky.Tiffany was long gone. My back was sore. By the time I finally managed to clamber out of the bed, my phone buzzed with a notification from Benjamin. 'Nicholas, how did it go last night?' Then, he sent me several texts that included Tiffany's information, which he had looked up on Google. He even sent me a link to an article.Although I thought he was overreacting with his sleuthing, I still ended up clicking on it.The article mentioned she attended the university in Ansela and had now returned home to start her own business, which was considered quite successful. She had also invested in other industries aside from the Wilson family's businesses. According to the news tabloid, she was a well-known tycoon in the industry even though she preferred to keep a low profile. She did have the Wilson family's wealth and resources at her beck and call, but she
