Chapter 1

"I won't stop you. Go."

Amy's head jerked up, surprise flashing in her eyes.

Her eyes narrowed. "Isaac, what are you plotting now? Don't tell me you're playing hard to get. You think I'd care?"

I held her gaze. "Your choice. Leave or stay."

A mocking smile curled on her lips. "If you'd been this reasonable earlier, we could've skipped all this. The more you cling to me, the more I hate you."

She paused, voice turning cold. "Go explain it to your family. I'm never agreeing to some marriage deal. Don't think you can use it to threaten me later."

At the words "marriage deal," I let out a quiet laugh.

In my last life, our families shoved two strangers together for profit.

That's how we got stuck in seven miserable years.

"I'll handle it. Don't worry about it."

I pulled the pocket watch off my chest and slammed it on the floor.

The crystal face shattered with a sharp crack.

"This was the engagement token our families agreed on. Now it's broken. You're free."

In my last life, I'd dropped to my knees at the airport, begging her to stay.

I even pulled out that pocket watch to threaten her.

If the Lacey family broke the engagement, they'd be the joke of the business world.

So Amy caved for her family's reputation and left the airport with me.

A few days later, the news said Bryan had died in a riot overseas.

She hated me for seven years because of it.

If I hadn't stopped her that day, maybe she could've convinced Bryan to stay.

"Isaac Irving, you're a murderer. Every time I see your face, I feel sick. Even if I die, I could never love someone as disgusting as you!"

I'd heard those words more times than I could count.

I knew she married me just to get back at me and make one thing clear—her heart would never be mine.

Years of cold cruelty wore me down.

So I promised her one last trip before filing for divorce.

And yet, the woman who hated me to the bone—

When the plane started going down, she shoved away the parachute I gave her without a second thought.

She'd rather die than owe me anything.

***

"Isaac, have you really thought this through? You're not gonna cling to me again?"

For once, Amy's voice carried a hint of hesitation.

  • The Groom She Never Wanted   Chapter 10

She glanced up at me, then quickly dropped her head again, the tips of her ears turning red.I didn't say anything else. I turned and walked out of the cemetery. That night, I checked into a hotel downtown.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. The whole city glowed below. From here, I could even see the direction of my old house.Still, I'd rather pay triple to stay here than go back to a place packed with bad memories.Sometime after I fell asleep, I had a strange dream. In it, Amy and I were married—but everything was different from my last life.In the mornings, she tied my tie. After work, I brought home desserts from her favorite shop.On weekends, we curled up on the couch watching movies. She'd fall asleep against my shoulder, quiet and warm. When I woke up, the sky was still dark.I stared at the ceiling for a long time, then let out a soft laugh.Maybe in some other universe, we really did live that life. But in this one, our paths had already split for good.

Amy stood a few steps back, a bouquet of white flowers in her hands. She hesitated, then stepped forward and set them gently by the tombstone."Isaac... how've you been these past few years?" Her voice was quiet."Pretty good."She nodded, her eyes lingering on my face like she was trying to read something there. But there was nothing to read. Just calm.Like there'd never been any deep love—or hate—between us.Silence settled in.Amy finally took a breath, like she'd made up her mind. "Isaac, actually I—""No need." I cut her off. "Why dig up the past?"Her eyes turned red instantly. The next second, her head dropped and she started crying. "I'm sorry. In the end, I'm the one who failed you."The sudden apology caught me off guard. From start to finish, had either of us really wronged the other?"Why are you apologizing?" I looked at her. "I was the one who chased you. I was the one who called off the engagement. What did you do wrong?"Amy froze, tears clinging to her

The clerk asked gently, "Miss, do you need any help?"Only then did Amy realize her face was already soaked with tears. She shook her head in panic and rushed into the rain.Rain mixed with her tears, blurring everything—just like the mess in her head.Turns out betrayal isn't the worst kind of pain. The worst is when the person who always stood behind you... finally gives up and walks away. And by the time you realize what you lost—it's already too late to say, "I'm sorry."That night, Amy scrolled through her photo album and found only one picture of Isaac.A random side shot from a party. In the photo, Isaac was looking at her—focused, like she was the only person in the room.Amy stared at it all night, tears soaking her pillow.Only then did she understand who the growing crack in her chest had always been for.***Isaac's POVAfter moving overseas, I cut off everyone back home and buried myself in research.Mr. Cheney valued my work. The project bonuses were big,

  • The Groom She Never Wanted   Chapter 7

Amy stared at her phone. The one who'd taken care of her after she got drunk last night wasn't Bryan—the guy she'd loved for years. It was Isaac. The one she'd always despised. The irony made her chest tighten. She wanted to laugh but couldn't. Wanted to cry, but no tears came. The more she thought about it, the worse it felt. She grabbed a throw pillow and hurled it at the wall."Isaac, did you really have to be this damn heartless? Fine—throw your little tantrum, I don't care. But blocking me everywhere? Seriously? I never asked you to treat me well. I just made things a little hard for you. So what? Why are you being so damn petty?"Halfway through, her eyes filled with tears. She didn't understand it.Wasn't getting rid of Isaac supposed to be something worth celebrating? So why did she feel so guilty now?Why did his silent departure make her feel—Like she was the one who'd been abandoned?***In the blink of an eye, more than half a year passed.Amy thought she a

I didn't answer. But Amy wasn't letting it go."Isaac, what gives you the right to just cancel it like that..."By then, her tears had already soaked through my shirt."If anyone's doing the dumping, it should be me!""Then do it. Dump me to my face." My voice stayed light.Amy's face twisted. She clearly hadn't expected that."Isaac, you bastard!"Fueled by alcohol, she let the insults fly.She called me a simp. Said looking at me made her sick.Meeting me was the biggest regret of her life.Even if every other guy on earth dropped dead, she still wouldn't marry me.I stayed quiet and let her talk—until she finally passed out.***Third-Person POVAmy didn't wake up until noon the next day, groggy and out of it.Her hangover pounded so hard it felt like her head might split open. She turned—and saw a glass of milk on the nightstand.Beside it sat the pills Isaac had set out earlier, along with a neatly folded set of fresh clothes. She froze. Then it all came back—

It clearly stated that Isaac had taken the initiative to end the engagement and would take all the blame and public criticism."He knows you don't have feelings for him." Vincent took off his glasses and rubbed his brow. "He didn't want to make things harder for you."You know Lawrence picked up a gambling habit years ago and burned through the family's savings."Isaac's been sharp since he was a kid. He went to school and still kept the company running. Without him, Irving Corp would've crashed a long time ago."Amy stared at the agreement. Her fingers started to shake. The freedom she'd wanted for so long now felt burning hot in her hands. The next second, she flung the papers to the floor."What gives him the right?!" she snapped. "If anyone was ending it, it should've been me dumping him. Who does that pathetic simp think he is, breaking up first?"***Amy stormed out and headed straight for a bar.She called Bryan and a few friends. Then, in front of everyone, she dropp
