Elias’s POV

I could still hear her scream.

The courtyard was a mess, and the air was thick with smoke and the smell of stone that had been burned. She stood trembling in the middle, her hands glowing slightly, her face pale as if she didn’t even belong to this world. Also, I saw *her* for one heartbreaking second.

Oh no, Rory.

Her.

The woman I lost a very long time ago.

Before anyone else could reach Rory, I jumped over the broken ground and grabbed her. When she touched mine, her body shook. She said, "Elias... I meant not to. I don’t know what happened.”

My chest tightened painfully. The same sound. The same big eyes. The same nervous lips that once begged me not to let her go.

But that woman had died in my arms as the sky burned red. And yet… Rory was here. Alive.

I forced my voice steady. “Breathe. Just breathe.”

Kael growled from the shadows of the courtyard, his voice rough. “Get your hands off her, Elias.”
