Rory's POV

The hall shimmered with golden light, chandeliers burning above long tables lined with silver plates and crystal goblets. Laughter rose around me, the sound almost too bright, too sharp, as though it covered something bad beneath.

I raised my cup, trying to hide my nerves. For once, the school wasn’t at war with itself. Wolves, vampires, dragons, and humans all sat at the same feast, appearing to be friends. Pretending I wasn’t the reason their bonds shook like glass.

Beside me, Maya leaned close, her smile sweet, her perfume soft as roses. “Drink, Rory. You deserve this. Tonight you’re not a tool or a promise. You’re just one of us.”

Her words warmed me. She had been my comfort in words, my rock in sleepless nights. If there was anyone I trusted, it was her. I smiled and lifted the cup.

The wine was deep red, sharp against my tongue. I swallowed. And the world turned.
