Chapter 3

Penulis: Felicity
My heart sank. I asked in disbelief, “Why?”

Ted laughed and said, “Of course, it’s because they wanted to protect Ms. Lydia.

“If they let you out, it would prove that Ms. Lydia lied. Ms. Summer, I’m sorry, but you have to spend the night here.”

After he said that, he left nonchalantly.

I collapsed on the floor as my heart throbbed in pain.

During the day, I swore to Lydia that our parents did not love her.

However, I knew I was the one our parents did not love.

My vision slowly went black as I fainted.

When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

I heard a reporter saying, “Mr. Harold and Mrs. Harold, it’s only been three months since your biological daughter returned home. Why did she faint?

“There are rumors claiming that you don’t treat your biological daughter well. Is that true?

“The doctors say Ms. Summer is malnourished. What’s your explanation for that?”

I did not hear their responses.

Someone opened the door of my ward. My parents walked in with darkened expressions.

They had just shut the door when Mom immediately yelled at me, “You’re jinxing us!

“We were living such a good life back then. Why did you look for us? Why didn’t you just die out there?”

I looked down.

Initially, I thought that once I created a small wedge between Axel and Lydia, I would be able to survive in that small crack.

However, I would not hold myself back anymore.

I looked up at them with tears streaming down my cheeks.

“Axel was tired of being the successor of the Harold family. That’s why he came to me.

“Lydia doesn’t want the arranged marriage, and Axel’s under immense pressure. He thought once I returned, they would be able to loosen up a little.”

Axel was indeed the one who brought me home. However, he found me via the address given by the police.

As long as they got the general idea, it would be fine.

I was omitting some parts of the truth—not technically lying.

I sniffed, and my voice was trembling.

“I know you don’t like me, but I’m doing this for Axel and Lydia…”

Dad’s face fell. “What are you talking about? The reason why we arranged this marriage for Lydia is to recognize her importance in this family!”

I answered, “If you don’t believe me, you can call Lydia now and ask if she’s actually willing to marry George.

“Then, you can ask Axel if he’s truly under a lot of pressure.”

My parents exchanged a glance. Mom immediately took out her phone and called Lydia.

“Lydia, I want to ask you something. Is it true that you really don’t want to marry George?”

Lydia was quiet for a second.

Immediately after, she exclaimed in surprise, “Mom, you’re finally asking me this! I don’t want to. I don’t like George at all, I…”

Before Lydia could finish her sentence, my mother hung up on her.

Her face was extremely pale.

Dad then called Axel.

However, it was Axel’s assistant, Jack Taylor, who answered the call.

“Mr. Harold, Mr. Axel is drunk. He has just fallen asleep.”

Dad was the one who planted Jack by Axel’s side to keep an eye on him.

Dad asked softly, “Did he tell you anything recently?”

Jack was stunned. It seemed like he was hesitant to speak. However, he said, “About this… Mr. Axel didn’t say much, but he did mention that he wants to find someone today.”

“Who?”

“Ms. Ada.”

Dad’s face immediately fell. “Why is he so hung up on a gold digger?”

After he said that, he also ended the call angrily.

I leaned against the headboard with tears streaming down my cheeks. However, I felt relieved.

I would be able to secure my own place in no time.

Lydia stood in the crowd helplessly. Blood drained from her face as her lips quivered. She kept shaking her head. “I didn’t mean that. I-I was just saying…”She had dug herself into a hole, and she almost sobbed. I stood a safe distance away and kept smiling politely. It was exactly what I wanted to happen. As the situation spun out of control, someone suddenly shouted over the commotion, “Enough!” George’s mother, Darla Brown, stood up from her VIP seat with a darkened expression. She swept her glance over the Harold family members and said coldly, “The Harold family sure has a lot of dirty laundry. “How dare you neglect your own flesh and blood and treat your fake daughter as the apple of your eye?”After she said that, she looked at me. “I’ll take care of the daughter you’ve forsaken. I’m calling off the engagement party today, and I’ll bring her back to the Brown family.” I was stunned.Initially, I wanted to drive a wedge between the two families, so the Harold fa

Lydia walked toward my parents with tears in her eyes.“Mom, Dad, the reason why I asked for the company shares was that she provoked me.“Summer told me that you don’t love me at all, and that you favor Axel over me. She said that I will never get a single thing from you. I was foolish to believe her words!”Axel also apologized in a low voice. He said, “I’m sorry, Mom and Dad. I’ve learned from my mistakes. Now, I know you only did that for my own good.” After they said that, both of them teared up and turned to the guests. “Please don’t be fooled by her innocent appearance! She wants to snatch everything from me and throw me out of my own home!”Everyone gasped. The reporters were taking photos of me. The guests started to look at me with scrutiny. “It seems like Summer’s not an easy person to deal with.”“Was she the one behind the news recently?”“She’s so young, yet she’s so cunning.” Under the crystal chandelier, I stared at them coldly as they gossiped about

Lydia paused, then charged upstairs like a madwoman. Then, she opened the door and saw that her yoga mat and Pilates equipment were all gone. In their place was my bed and desk. She teared up and ran downstairs. Coincidentally, she bumped into Mom and Dad, who had just come home. “Mom, Dad, how can you let her take my yoga room? That’s mine!” Dad looked tired as he went upstairs without saying a word. It was obvious that he was exhausted from dealing with the news and the phone calls from the Brown family. Mom frowned and sounded impatient. “You created such a huge mess yesterday. Don’t you know that? Summer’s the one who cleaned up your mess. She just asked for a room. Is that so wrong?”Lydia yelled even louder, “No way! That room is mine! Everything in this family belongs to me! Who is she—” Mom slapped Lydia fiercely across her cheek. “Shut up! You’re just the daughter of a butler. Do you really think the Harold family belongs to you? It’s already very kind of us to ta

I looked down and tried to stifle my laugh.Ted had completely lost it.He had not managed to solve his issue, yet he was already worried about Lydia’s interests being threatened. It was understandable. After all, without the blood relation to the Harold family, the biggest leverage Lydia had was being George’s fiancee. However, it was the wrong move to defend Lydia. As expected, Mom sneered and said, “You’ve already been caught, and you’re still trying to pull strings for your daughter?” She turned to yell at the door, “Security! Throw this person out!” The security guards came in very quickly and escorted Ted out. Ted started panicking. He struggled as he shouted, “Mrs. Harold, I didn’t do that! I’m really being framed…”Mom did not want to listen to him at all. She just stared at him coldly. “I’m going to sue you. From today onwards, don’t show your face here anymore.” The living room became quiet after they left.My mother turned to me and looked a little guilty

Ted turned to look at me. The anxiety made his voice sharper. “No! I have never said that! You’re lying!” Then, he looked at my parents. A vein was throbbing in his forehead. “Mr. Harold and Mrs. Harold, you know me the best. Why would I say something like that? Ms. Summer probably hates me and wants to smear my name!”Dad did not say a word, and Mom’s face fell. She stared at Ted. “Do you mean that Lydia is truly your daughter?”Ted gaped. Finally, it seemed like he had lost all strength when he slowly nodded. “Back then, when Ms. Summer got lost, I heard that you were planning to adopt a new child, so I sent my daughter to the orphanage. “But I swore I was just trying my luck. You’re the ones who chose her.”My parents were silent for a while. It seemed like they were trying to determine if Ted was being truthful. When I was staying in the maid’s room, I had heard many times from the helpers that Lydia was so charming that Ted would personally bring the best cut frui

I was hospitalized for three days. My parents were afraid of being judged, so they personally came to pick me up from the hospital. Lydia’s face immediately fell when she saw our parents fetching me home. During dinner, she played with her food while looking sullen. Usually, my parents would immediately ice me out to comfort her. However, they ignored her expression and told the chef to make my favorite food. Lydia teared up. After a while, it seemed like she was trying to prove something to me as she asked, “Dad, can you give me company shares as my birthday present this year?”Dad frowned. “You’re only 18. Why do you need the shares?”“Why did Axel get it the moment he turned 18?” “Axel is going to be the CEO of the company one day!” Lydia stood up and roared, “I know, Axel’s the one you truly love. You’re only using your daughter as a tool to expand your power!” After she said that, she charged out of the door without any hesitation. When she left, she bumped
