Steve hit the ground hard. Blood spurted from his lips as he struggled to rise, only to be met by another brutal kick to the ribs that sent him sprawling again. His dark doppelganger towered above him, face carved in a permanent smirk of mockery and disdain.

"You're pathetic," the doppelganger sneered, cracking his knuckles as he circled Steve. "Every punch, every step, every grunt you make... I already know what you're going to do before you even think it."

Steve gritted his teeth, dragging himself up on shaking arms. His muscles screamed in agony, his bones felt like they were splintering under his own weight. The pain was unrelenting, but it was the helplessness that gnawed at him.

He lunged forward, aiming a hook at the doppelganger's jaw.

It was blocked.

The counter-punch came like a hammer, crashing into his cheek and spinning him to the ground. He felt his vision blur, but he forced his eyes to remain open.

"You're not just fighting me," the doppelganger said, grabbing Steve by

The moon was high, painting silver streaks on the floor of Elder Weaver’s compound, but Steve wasn’t looking at the sky. He stood on the porch, his arms folded tightly across his chest as he stared at the trees swaying beyond the grove. The night wind tugged at the hem of his shirt, cool against the growing fire inside him.Behind him, he heard Emma’s soft footsteps approach.“You’re not resting,” she said, her tone edged with concern.Steve turned his head slowly, his gaze thoughtful but firm. “There’s something I need to do before we leave for the Vale of Thorns.”Emma frowned. “Steve, you’re barely stable after everything—”“I need to see the Berserker.”Emma stiffened. “That’s not a good idea.”Steve nodded slightly. “I know.”She stepped closer, her hands clenched at her sides. “Then why?”“Because he’s a part of me,” Steve said, his voice heavy. “I tried to deny it for too long. I tried to lock him away, to pretend that I was only the Alpha and nothing else. But he didn’t go awa

The grove was quiet. Too quiet. Not the peaceful silence of a dawn morning—but the breathless stillness that followed the collapse of something ancient. Something wicked. Emma could feel it vibrating under her skin, like the echo of a scream that had yet to fade.Steve leaned heavily against her shoulder, still weak from the soul walk. His hand clutched hers like a man afraid to let go. His skin was cold, his heartbeat slow, but steady. Alive.Alive.Emma had to keep repeating that word to herself because her body still trembled from the impossible feat they had just survived.“Are you alright?” Marcus asked, his voice quiet, his brows furrowed with concern.“I will be,” Emma whispered. She glanced down at Steve, who gave her the faintest nod. “We both will be.”Weaver crouched beside them, her aged hands gently feeling for Steve’s pulse. “This is… remarkable,” she muttered. “He shouldn’t be alive. Not after where he’s been. Not after what you both endured in there.”“He’s not just al

Emma clenched her fists as Grimkeeper rose from his seat, towering and ominous in the candlelit chamber that reeked of centuries-old silence and unshed blood. The flames behind him danced strangely, casting shadows that moved against the laws of nature, whispering and writhing along the walls like they too were alive and watching her. "You were always bold, I'll give you that," Grimkeeper said, descending the steps before his throne-like chair. His voice echoed unnaturally, as if layered over itself. "But boldness in the realm of darkness can either make you powerful… or destroy you." Emma stood her ground, keeping her fear masked behind an expression she had learned from watching Steve—stoic, unreadable, calm despite the storm. Her heart pounded erratically in her chest, but she didn’t let it show. She wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. "I’m here for Steve," she said firmly. "And I’m not leaving without him." Grimkeeper chuckled. "You think love will protect you? That a fragil

"This is a very dangerous idea, Emma," Weaver said with worry in her tone. "You could die.""If I do nothing, then Steve will never come back and he will be lost forever," Emma said. "I cannot live with myself if I do not give it a try."Emma and Marcus had visisted Weaver and told her the plan. The Council Elder had stared at Emma with a shocked expression when the idea of soul walking was brought up."You could lose your soul and not find a way back into your body, Emma, I want you to know the risk of what you are about to do," Weaver pressed."I do not mind the risk," Emma said."And you are alright with this?" Weaver asked Marcus. "Endangering her life like this?""I am aware of insane the situation is, Elder Weaver but my only concern right now is to bring back to the rightful leader of Sterling Creek," Marcus said with a grim expression on his face.Emma knew that the Beta did not like what she was about to do but what other choice was left?Weaver sighed and shook her head. "Ho

  • The Healer's Bond    185. UNWILLING GUEST OF THE DARKNESS

Steve drifted in and out of consciousness like a boat caught in a storm, sometimes anchored in agony, sometimes floating in a numb abyss. Each time his eyes opened, he wished they hadn’t. The pain was not fading. It had only evolved—from sharp and urgent to something more insidious and constant, like fire simmering just beneath his skin. The stone beneath him was cold, but his body burned. His breath came out in short rasps. Every shift, every twitch, every blink sent blinding shocks through his limbs. But what truly unsettled him was the absence of something he had always taken for granted: his healing. His werewolf regeneration—so reliable, so constant, so vital—was not working. The slashes on his back remained open. The bruises did not fade. The torn muscles did not knit themselves back together. Something about this place—this realm of Grimkeeper—was preventing it. He was trapped in the dark without his most primal gift.He sank again into unconsciousness. When he opened his eyes,
