I watch the sun rise through the dusty windows. The place reeks of damp and rot and ancient cigarettes. I stare up at the yellowing ceiling, waiting for the day to start properly.

The children are still asleep. I can hear their soft, even breathing through the closed door separating our rooms, but Em is awake. She is in the hallway, humming softly to herself. She probably thinks she’s cleaning.
