I hated this town.

Every time my boots hit the dirt road, it felt like the people were holding their breath, watching me, waiting for me to slip. Lucien and I had been circling the same streets for days, hoping to catch a shadow of the man we were looking for.

Still nothing. Just silence, cold stares, and the kind of tension that dug under your skin.

We’d split again today, like we always did. Lucien asked how we were supposed to recognize him when we found him.

“You’ll just know,” I told him. Remenerning rhe exact words of the woman. He gave me a skeptical look.

I didn't say anything else. He shook his head and muttered, “You’re probably right. He's a rogue afterall, we should be able to sniff him out in the crowd.”

Maybe he was right and that was what the mystery woman had meant. Maybe it really was about basic instinct.

But maybe it wasn't and she'd meant something else entirely.
