The cool moonlight shone in the twins’ room, offering further illumination besides the fire in the hearth. I leaned against the doorframe, watching them silently. They were sitting cross-legged on the bed, still wide awake despite the late hour.

Talia played with a little stuffed wolf while Kael absentmindedly traced patterns into his quilt.

They looked up at me as I entered. Since the invasion, it had become routine for me to check up on them at night before bed and first thing in the morning.
