My pulse was still racing as I stared at Vane through the iron bars. His eyes, too calm for a man accused of the highest treason, didn’t waver from mine.

“Tonight?” I asked again. “You’re sure?”

“I would not have summoned you if I was not.” His tone remained even. “Someone here has been pulling the strings. I just never had the full proof—until now.”

"Testing me? Testing—what does that even mean?"
