LOGIN"...You've finally come back."
Adrian's voice was low and almost restrained, but Serena heard the accusation beneath every word and for a long moment, neither of them moved.
The years between them seemed to disappear, leaving only the silence that had once broken her heart.
Serena tightened her grip on the edge of the table until her knuckles turned white. She had imagined this moment countless times over the years and in every version, she had rehearsed what she would say if they ever met again but now none of those words came.
Adrian looked exactly as she remembered, only harder and the warmth that used to soften his sharp features had been replaced by an icy composure that made him seem untouchable.
His charcoal suit fit him perfectly, and the expensive watch on his wrist caught the afternoon sunlight, he had changed and so had she but the ache he left behind hadn't.
"I asked you a question," Adrian said, taking another step toward her. "Where have you been all these years?"
Serena let out a quiet laugh, one completely devoid of humor. "You don't get to ask me that."
His brows drew together. "I don't?"
"No."
She finally met his gaze, refusing to look away.
"You lost that right five years ago."
Something flickered across Adrian's face and it was confusion and disbelief then irritation, I whole lot was going through his mind because nothing Serena said made sense to him.
"I've spent five years trying to find you."
Her expression froze. "What?"
"I searched every city I thought you might have gone to and I even hired private investigators. I have checked every immigration records." His jaw tightened. "You disappeared without a trace and you dare talk shit to my face, did I ment nothing to you?"
Serena stared at him as though he'd spoken another language then she laughed again, louder this time.
It was bitter and painful, her heart was pounding greatly and when she thought it was about to burst, she found her voice again. "You've got some nerve."
Adrian expression darkened as each word came out from her mouth but she kept speaking.
"You blocked my number," she said, each word steady despite the storm raging inside her. "You vanished overnight and I couldn't reach you no matter how hard I tried."
Adrian frowned. "I never blocked you."
The certainty in his voice almost made her question her own memory but she definitely wasn't suffering amnesia. "Don't."
"I'm telling you the truth."
"The truth?" she echoed. "Is that what we're calling it now?"
She took a slow breath, forcing herself to remain calm.
"The apartment we shared..." Her voice trembled despite her efforts.
"I came back to find the locks changed and every single thing I owned had been thrown onto the street."
Adrian's eyes narrowed. "What are you even talking about?"
"Your family came to my apartment."
"My family?"
"They called me a gold digger."
His face remained blank. "They told me I'd never be accepted."
He said nothing. "They told me you had already moved on."
Still nothing.
"And then..." Serena swallowed hard. "A woman introduced herself as your fiancée."
Adrian's eyes widened. "My what?"
"She told me to leave the country if I knew what was good for me."
For the first time since he'd appeared, Adrian looked genuinely shaken.."I've never been engaged."
Serena searched his face because she wanted to believe him.
God, she wanted to but she couldn't not after everything she'd endured. "You expect me to believe that?"
"It's the truth."
She shook her head. "No, the truth is that you abandoned me."
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I never left you, Serena."
Her heart pounded painfully against her ribs.
"You left me before I even had the chance to ask why."
Adrian stepped closer. "I woke up one morning and you were gone."
Her breath caught. "What?"
"You packed your things."
"I never...."
"You left a letter."
Serena's eyes widened. "A letter saying you regretted ever meeting me and that you'd found someone who could give you the life you deserved."
The color drained from her face. "I never wrote any letter."
Their eyes locked and for the first time, uncertainty crept into both of their expressions.
Someone was lying or someone had made sure they would never know the truth, meither of them spoke and the silence stretched between them until Ethan finally rose from his seat. "I think that's enough."
Adrian's gaze shifted to him, instantly hardening. "And you are?"
"Ethan Carter."
"I wasn't asking your name."
Ethan didn't flinch. "I'm aware."
Adrian looked him up and down before asking the question that had been burning inside him since he walked into the restaurant. "Are you her husband?"
Before Serena could answer, Ethan calmly replied, "My relationship with Serena isn't any of your business."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "So that's a yes."
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't deny it either."
Serena rubbed her temples. "This conversation is over, continue your life without me because I have moved on with mine."
She reached for her handbag. "We're leaving."
As she turned, her eyes instinctively searched the garden and the expression on her face changed because he fountain was empty.
Her heartbeat stuttered as she called out her son's name. "Noah?"
She looked toward the flower beds and there was no sign of him, she looked to the other side and after calling his name again, got nothing. Now her breathing quickened as she called again. "Noah!"
Ethan immediately looked around. "He was just here."
Soon panic gripped Serena's chest as she hurried toward the fountain, scanning every corner of the garden.
"Noah!" she called again, louder this time but the little boy was nowhere in sight then a familiar childish laugh drifted across the garden and Serena spun toward the sound as her eyes widened in horror. "Noah... don't!"
Her scream echoed through the restaurant as Adrian instinctively turned toward the same direction as she.
Serena POVEthan came over for a family function, and somehow, between everything that was happening around us, I ended up telling him everything.Ethan stared at me for several seconds after I finished talking, his expression filled with disbelief. "So you went back to him after everything that happened?"I opened my mouth, but no words came out. What was I supposed to say? That I didn't understand myself either and that I knew better, but somehow, whenever Adrian looked at me, all the strength I had built over the years seemed to disappear?Instead, I looked away and my eyes landed on Noah, who was sitting on the floor nearby, completely lost in his little world. He was playing with his toys, moving them around and occasionally making little sounds to himself.Watching him made something inside me ache. "It’s officially over with him now," I said quietly.Ethan didn't respond immediately. "I've found someone new," I continued, forcing myself to say the words with confidence."Someon
Serena POV The cab stopped at the curb, and the driver waited for me to get out. I could just tell the driver to go back, but I didn’t want to leave.I finally got out of the car and moved to the front door. My finger dug into the cushioned doorbell, and I waited for someone to answer. The housekeeper opened the door, visibly surprised to see me standing there. “Serena? How are you? I haven’t seen you in a while.”I shouldn’t have expected her to know anything. I didn’t see why Adrian would explain himself to his maid. “I was wondering if I could see him.”“Sure.” She invited me inside then grabbed her phone. “I’ll tell him you’re on your way up.”There was no going back now. I entered the room with the grand staircase and started my ascent to the top floor. It was a spiral stairway, the kind that went round and round until it reached the chandelier at the top. The crystals were bright with the light, and the white banister was smooth under my fingertips as I glided up.My heart was
Adrian POV “What the hell are you wearing?” I took the seat across from my sister in the restaurant, looking at her short blue dress, enormous sunglasses, and pulled-back hair. “It’s almost October.”She took off her sunglasses and gave me that ferocious look she’d been giving me since she could crawl. Her thick lashes were full of mascara, and her bright eyeshadow made her look as if she were ready for a pool party. “I’m not ready to accept fall. I want to hold on to summer a little longer.”“Well, summer is long gone. The first official day of fall was last week.....”“Shh.” She leaned over the table and placed her forefinger against my lips. “Don’t talk like that.” She leaned back and picked up her menu, as if she hadn’t just shoved her hand in my face. “I know I should get a salad, but I don’t want to… I can dance if I’m a hundred pounds heavier, so I don’t get all the rules.”“Stop dancing."“I don’t want to do that either. I’ll retire when I turn thirty and order whatever I wan
Serena POVI got to pick the restaurant, so I chose somewhere casual....a small bistro a few minutes from my apartment.I didn't want anything fancy or overly romantic.I just wanted somewhere comfortable where we could sit, eat, talk, and hopefully get through the evening without making things more complicated than they already were.We sat across from each other at a small table near the window, sharing my favorite bottle of wine while we both ordered salads. The atmosphere was relaxed enough, and for a while, Rylan actually managed to keep the conversation light. He asked about work, complained about a few things of his own, and even asked what I'd been watching on TV lately. I played along, answering his questions and occasionally laughing at something he said but I knew it was coming.Eventually, he was going to ask about Adrian.I could feel the question waiting between us, even before he finally said it. "Did he text you back?"There it was and I lowered my eyes to my wineglass
Serena POV A week had passed since I’d stupidly texted Adrian and God, I seemed desperate but I was desperate…for one man. I could go back to find someone else, but that wasn’t what I wanted.I wanted Adrian....like always, I sat at my desk and let my thoughts drift into the past, when we’d made love on the couch while the fire burned in the hearth.I was on his lap, slowly riding his bare length as I looked into those intense eyes and I wanted to do that every night.“Sere?” Aurora stood on the other side of my desk, slowly waving her hand in front of my face.“Oh, sorry.” I snapped out of it, missing the heat of the flames the second I was pulled from the memory. “Where were you?”“You know…thinking about my grocery list.”Shry didn’t seem to believe me, but she didn’t call me out on it. “How have you been?”“Good…good.”She lowered herself into the chair. “Honestly, you look just as pale as you did three weeks ago.”It’d been three weeks? It felt like a day. It felt like he’d just
Adrian POV I descended into the lair where the crown syndicate operated in plain sight.Pedestrians walked past the building, assuming it was an old factory that may or may not be in operation. The police knew where it was and always avoided the streets surrounding it but with a few men, I got past security and descended to the bottom floor, where the crown syndicate preferred to linger with their booze and women. All the men at the tables glanced at me when I entered, their laughter dying away when they recognized who I was. Women sat on the laps of the generous tippers, their tits hanging out in their barely there clothing.Ivan sat on the wooden throne, skulls carved into the black wood, his knees far apart and his slouched frame sunk into the large chair. His elbow was on one armrest, and he stared at me with a sense of boredom.I dropped my bag of money on the ground and my men did the same.It was dead silent as Ivan stared at me, all the men holding their breaths to see what
