Chapter 1

The notary's finger hovered above the keyboard for a moment.

"Mrs. Fuzio." He adjusted his glasses, not daring to look straight at me. "The heir next in line needs to be present to confirm his intentions."

I was confused.

Christian Fuzio was an only child. His parents passed away ten years ago. We were married for 20 years with no children.

"What did you say?"

Before the notary could reply, the doors opened.

When the boy walked in, I didn't even react. That was, until I saw his face.

His brows, chin, and even his posture where he crossed his arms all looked like someone.

Zoe Sgotti. Christian's assistant for 20 years.

The boy smirked and said in a lazy tone, "Mrs. Fuzio, the person my father loved most in his life was my mother. Of course, most of the inheritance belongs to us."

My mind blanked as if something slammed violently onto it. I refused to accept this news.

Christian loved me so much. How could he have a child with another woman?

"My father stopped loving you for a long time. Don't tell me that you're only finding out about this now, you foolish woman?"

His mockery stomped my heart into pieces.

I stood up, barely. My legs felt like jelly.

Memories flooded my mind: Christian hugging me, telling me that he would love me forever; Christian staying awake beside me all night when I was sick.

Those memories of love clashed violently with the truth of betrayal, tearing my heart apart.

I burst into hysterical sobs like a madwoman.

The moment I stepped out of the notary's office, a hand suddenly pressed against my shoulder and shoved me straight into the traffic.

During the accident, I heard the dull sound of my head hitting the ground.

Then darkness swallowed everything.

When I opened my eyes again, I was staring at a mirror.

The woman in the reflection was young, with blond hair and a sweet smile, longing for love.

I lowered my head to see the pregnancy test kit beside me.

I was reborn, returning to the first year when I just married Christian.

The first thing I did was to call my university professor, Richard Lisetti.

"Professor Lisetti, I accept your invitation to join the research team."

Richard was stunned. I just turned down his invitation the day before. I told him I was pregnant and that I couldn't bear to be away from Christian.

"Rae, have you really thought this through? This project is highly confidential. Once you're in, you won't be able to contact the outside world. Does your husband agree?"

The memories of betrayal in my previous life flooded my mind. I was not going to make the same mistake again in this life.

"I'm divorced. I will join the team with my child. If you agree, I can depart any time."

"Of course, I agree! I'll prepare living arrangements suitable for a pregnant woman and arrange a professional obstetrician to make sure you’re in good health! We depart in three days!"

After hanging up, I started packing.

In my previous life, I had a miscarriage due to an accident. In this life, I was going to protect my baby.

Christian Fuzio, in this life, neither my child nor I wanted you anymore.

Seven months later. The lights in the operating room were blindingly bright. I lay on the operating table, listening to the steady beeping of the machines beside me. My palms were drenched in sweat.Jacopo was holding my hand tightly. His hand was colder than mine. "It's fine. It will be over soon."Finally, I heard the cry of a baby. The nurse showed me a tiny bundle."Congratulations," she said with a smile. "It's a girl."Jacopo stood up to look at that wrinkly baby. His eyes reddened. He turned back to look at me, saying with a trembling voice, "Rae, she's so small."The day I got discharged from the hospital, the sun was shining brightly.Jacopo came to pick me up, with a baby seat already installed in the back. He placed the baby in the car, buckling her up, and checked three times before feeling relieved.I sat in the passenger seat, looking at him. "Jacopo, thank you."He was a little surprised. Then, he chuckled. "You don't have to thank me. We still have a long life

When I came around, I noticed that I was tied to a chair. My wrists were hurting from the tight rope wrapped around them. My mouth was stuffed with a piece of cloth. It was dark all around me, with only a dim lightbulb lit above my head. The door opened. Christian entered and walked over to me. His eyes were filled with heartbreak and mania. He bent down and tried to touch my face, but I dodged. His hand hung in mid-air for a moment before he retracted it."Why? 15 years. I have been with you for 15 years. I have made you breakfast; I have looked after you all night. Who the hell is he? He has only done that for a month! What right does he have?"His voice suddenly got very loud. Then, he bent down and slowly took off the piece of cloth in my mouth.I coughed twice and looked up at him, right in his eyes. "Christian, when you betrayed me, you forgot about the vows you promised me."You left everything for Zoe and her child, leaving me with nothing."When I was having a misc

"Rae." His voice was like a needle stabbing right in my eardrum. "I'm in Swisserland. Where are you?"I hung up.Jacopo looked at me and asked, "Who is it?""No one." I placed my phone back into my pocket. "What did you want to say just now?"He looked at me for two seconds before shaking his head. "Nothing. Get some rest."The next morning, when I arrived downstairs, I didn't see Jacopo. I was a little caught off guard, but I soon chuckled self-deprecatingly and headed to the labs on my own.I was just leaving the neighborhood when someone blocked my way.Christian stood there. His eyes were deep set, and his beard unshaven, as if he did not sleep for days."Rae, come back with me."I took a step back. "Back to where?""Home.""I no longer have a home. Christian, we are divorced. You signed the papers."His gaze darkened. He reached out, wanting to hold my hand, but I dodged him."It was a misunderstanding. I didn't know that Zoe was this sort of person. I sent her away.

Summer in Swisserland was much cooler than I expected.I stood by the door of the research lab when I heard a familiar voice behind me. "Rae Sartorelli?"I turned around to see Jacopo Lugano.Jacopo was two years my senior in university. He guided me for half a year in the labs back then.I no longer saw him after I left school to marry."It really is you." He walked over with a smile. "Professor Lisetti said you're coming. I thought he was joking."He swept a glance at my abdomen but soon looked away. "Where's your luggage?""At the hotel.""Are the dorms not ready yet? Let's go and have a look. I'll help you get whatever is missing."The dorm was a one-bedroom apartment. It wasn't huge, but it was clean. He placed a folder on the table and turned to look at me. "You've gotten skinny."I smiled in response, but said nothing. He didn't press further."Professor Lisetti's project officially starts next week. Get familiar with it over the next few days. Ask me if you don't un

While shopping, Zoe received a message from her private investigator.[She has left the divorce papers and left.]When Christian returned to the estate, it was late at night. The lights were still on.Roses covered the entire garden. The reporters were still waiting for an interview at the gates.Everyone was waiting for the segment where the devoted husband surprises his wife with a huge gift, but the main star of tonight didn't show up.Christian stood before his car, looking at the empty garden. He furrowed his brows."Where is Rae?" The butler was stunned. "Didn't she leave with you? Not long after you left, she left as well."Christian suddenly had a bad feeling. He took his phone out and dialed Rae. Her phone was switched off. He dialed once again, but it was still off.He paused. At that moment, his assistant quickly came over. "Don Fuzio, Donna Fuzio left through the back door this afternoon.""Where did she go?""We don't know."Christian's gaze darkened. He ent

Even if I already expected it, seeing the betrayal right in front of my eyes was still a huge blow to me.Zoe smirked at me provocatively. I turned around and left. I didn't rush in and question them, which seemed to have disappointed her. Then, Zoe sent me an anonymous message and a photo of Christian, his ears pressed to her abdomen, listening intently.[Rae Sartorelli, you must have been reborn as well, right? If not, you wouldn't be here. If you know any better, you'd leave at once! If not, I wouldn't mind getting you in an accident once more!]I couldn't be bothered to fight with her over a cheating man.I returned home and started packing up. My phone vibrated constantly in my pocket, but I ignored it.A while later, Christian rushed in and hugged me."Why didn't you go to the restaurant? You didn't pick up my calls as well! I thought something happened to you!"Seeing me pack, he said with an almost indiscernible tone of panic. "What are you doing?""I'm packing some
