Chapter 2

Author: Anna Smith
On the third day of Sienna's trial run, the Ashfords held a family dinner.

Callum's mother sent me the address and told me to bring the crest ring traditionally worn by the wives of Ashford heirs. She had placed that ring on my hand herself when Callum and I married.

But I knew she had never liked me.

In her eyes, Lucia Bennett had no distinguished family, no meaningful connections, and nothing that could advance her son's ambitions. If Callum had not insisted on marrying me, the ring that marked the Ashford family's future matriarch would never have reached my hand.

The first time I visited the Ashford estate, his mother announced before a table full of relatives that a woman of my background could contribute nothing to Callum's career.

Callum had taken my hand and answered her with quiet resolve.

"Lucia is the woman I'm marrying. My marriage will not become anyone's business transaction."

At the time, I truly believed he would stand beside me no matter what happened.

Now the memory only felt distant.

I looked down at the crest ring on my finger. His mother had put it on me when I joined the Ashfords; tonight, I intended to take it off in front of her and return it for good.

By the time I reached the estate, Sienna was already sitting in my usual place. There was no chair left beside Callum. A member of staff had to bring one from another room and set it at the far end of the long dining table.

Callum's mother smiled as she explained. "Since Sienna is spending the week experiencing life as Mrs. Ashford, the family dinner should be part of it. It is only a few days, Lucia. Don't make everyone uncomfortable."

Callum had also ordered the kitchen to rebuild the menu around Sienna's preferences.

I had a severe peanut allergy. Even after seven years of marriage, peanut brittle and nut-based desserts still appeared at Ashford dinners. In the beginning, Callum had reminded the kitchen. Later, he merely told me to avoid whatever I could not eat.

Yet because Sienna disliked cilantro, not a single leaf appeared on the table.

When she spotted one green fragment floating in her soup, she barely had time to frown before Callum stopped the server.

"Take it back and make another. The smell makes her sick."

The previous year, they had seated Sienna in my place for the first time. When I left the dinner, Callum followed me into the garden.

A chair meant nothing, he told me. Then he held me and promised, "Your place will always belong to you."

This year, I did not even qualify for the seat beside him.

Before the family photograph, Callum's mother looked at my right hand.

"Take off the ring. Let Sienna wear it for a few minutes so the picture looks complete."

Sienna immediately shook her head. "We shouldn't. The ring belongs to Lucia."

But she never looked away from it, and her hand was already extended toward me.

Before I could answer, Callum took my right hand.

"It's one photograph," he murmured. "She'll give it back as soon as we're done."

He eased the ring over my knuckle. The metal scraped my skin, leaving an angry red circle around my finger. Callum lowered his head to inspect the crest for scratches, then personally slid the ring onto Sienna's right hand.

"Everything goes back to normal in seven days," he said, looking at me. "Don't ruin tonight over a ring."

For the photograph, Sienna stood beside Callum while his parents sat in front of them. I was placed at the very edge of the group, nearly outside the frame.

When the photographer asked everyone to move closer, Sienna slipped her arm through Callum's. He did not pull away.

I turned to his mother.

"You can keep the ring."

Her smile stiffened. "Lucia, this is an anniversary game. If you say things like that, you only make the evening unpleasant for the whole family."

I did not explain myself.

A relative who did not know about the game soon posted the family portrait in the Ashford group chat.

[At last, the whole family is here.]

Several relatives commented that Callum and Sienna looked perfect together. Someone joked about whether they planned to hold another wedding.

Callum's mother did not correct them. She merely left a red heart beneath the message.

I looked at the Ashford family chat I had belonged to for seven years and quietly selected Leave Group.

Callum noticed almost immediately.

[I know you're upset.]

[When the game is over, we'll sit down and talk.]

I no longer needed that conversation.

Two years later, I separated Marcelli Group's legitimate shipping and risk-management operations into a company of my own.The Marcelli family provided the initial resources, but I personally earned every contract, every shipping route, and every vote of confidence from the board. There was no red carpet or elaborate ceremony on opening day.My team bought a cake and gathered in the conference room to celebrate. Written across the top were the words:[Lucia, welcome back to your own life.]I studied them for a long moment, then smiled and blew out the candles.Over the years, Callum occasionally sent things through intermediaries. The first year, he sent the new company history containing all the photographs that had once been removed. The second, he returned the work journals I had left in our house. This year, there was only a card.[Happy anniversary.]The words had been crossed out. Beneath them, Callum had written:[I'm sorry. I forgot we no longer have an anniversary.]I replaced

After Callum released his statement, footage from the anniversary gala spread online.Viewers recognized the Ashford family ring on Sienna's hand and saw her standing onstage as though she were Callum's wife. Soon, people uncovered records of the games from the previous three years. The bets, the secret recordings, and the laughter were all dragged into public view. The backlash escalated quickly. Some accused Sienna of intruding into a marriage. Others demanded to know why Callum had needed his wife's pain as proof that she loved him.The friends who participated deleted their posts. Several contacted me privately and asked me to explain that they had only been joking because we were close and had never intended any harm.I did not respond. The people who caused the harm did not get to decide whether their intentions erased it.Sienna published a long statement of her own.She claimed she had only cooperated with the anniversary game, and that everything she did had been accepted by b

Callum waited outside Marcelli Group headquarters for three hours.By the time my meeting ended, the night wind had drained the color from his face. The moment I stepped outside, he hurried toward me."Lucia, we need to talk."One of the guards moved forward. I raised a hand and signaled him to stop."Business hours are over. Mr. Ashford and I have nothing professional to discuss."The words Mr. Ashford stopped him in place. In seven years, I had never addressed him that way.Callum held out a document. It was a newly produced history of Ashford Group. My name had been restored to its rightful place as cofounder. Behind it were an equity compensation agreement and an offer for me to return."The company needs you," he said. Then, more quietly, "I need you too."I did not accept the papers."If the company lacks a director, hire one. Whatever you need personally is yours to resolve."His face went pale."I know I was wrong. I was simply too sure that you loved me. My parents had a terri

Sienna had only sprained her ankle.By the time Callum reached the hospital, her scans were complete. The doctor said nothing was broken and she would recover after a few days of rest. With reddened eyes, Sienna caught his sleeve."Did you miss the final hearing with Lucia because of me?"Callum was silent for a moment. Then he placed the court's divorce decree in front of her.Sienna stared at it. Expectation quickly surfaced in her eyes."So you're truly free now. Callum, during those seven days, did you ever see me as your wife, even for a moment?"He pulled his arm away, his expression turning cold."I told you that Lucia is the only woman I love. If my lack of boundaries led you to misunderstand me, that is my fault. But do not treat my divorce as permission to cross another line."He left Sienna in the nurse's care and returned to the house alone. The silence inside was suffocating. My side of the walk-in closet was completely empty. There were no bottles on my vanity, no familia

For the next thirty days, Callum never truly apologized.Instead, he continued to document the passing time in the group chat.[Day One. She hasn't come back.][Day Five. Her resignation is final.][Day Ten. She had everything she owned removed from the house.]At first, his friends continued to joke. Some said I had stayed angry too long. Others advised Callum to send flowers and give me an excuse to return with my pride intact. But he still refused to accept that this was not an argument in which he only had to wait for me to yield.[She won't throw away a seven-year marriage.][She'll change her mind before the final hearing.]On the twentieth day, Callum sent me a photograph of the primary bedroom. The pale blue sheets were gone, and our wedding portrait had been rehung above the bed.[The room is back to normal.]I did not respond. On the twenty-fifth day, he sent the new version of Ashford Group's anniversary film. The laughter in the living room died the moment Callum saw the signed settlement. The countdown on the wall stopped at one.The person filming forgot to lower his phone. The camera remained trained on Callum, just as it had remained trained on me for the past three years, waiting to capture a breakdown that would prove how deeply I loved him. This time, however, the only thing that returned to the house was a binding agreement.Callum flipped immediately to the final page. When he confirmed that the signature was mine, his expression darkened. He called me at once. The airport was issuing its final boarding call. I stopped in front of the gate and answered."Lucia, do you know what you signed?""Yes.""These aren't the fake papers we used to tease you before." His voice was taut. "The division of property, ownership of the house, attorney certification, all of it is real.""That is why I sent it."His friends finally recovered enough to intervene."Lucia is taking it too seriously this
