Chapter 1

Callum did not follow me when I walked out of our home.

Behind me, his friends kept laughing.

"Callum really stepped up the game this year."

"Don't surrender too quickly, Lucia."

Callum gave a quiet laugh, his voice full of confidence. "She's only angry. Give her three days at most. She'll come back on her own."

That evening, he reopened the betting pool in their group chat. Callum put down thirty thousand dollars that I would not last seventy-two hours.

To force me to make the first move, he formally added Sienna's fingerprint to the security system and handed her the spare key reserved for the woman of the house.

Wearing my slippers, Sienna posted a photograph of the key beside the breakfast Callum had prepared for her.

[Mrs. Ashford Experience, Day One.]

Their friends immediately joined in.

[Does she get to try the primary bedroom tonight?]

[You should let her drive Callum's car too.]

Callum did not object. He simply replied:

[The keys are in the second drawer by the front door.]

I saw the post while packing at the old apartment my mother had left me. No one had lived there in years. Dust coated the windowsill, and rust had begun to bloom around the kitchen faucet.

Still, no one there treated my place in my own life like a prize in a party game.

During the first year's challenge, Sienna had taken one of my custom gowns without permission. I ended the game in front of everyone.

Callum followed me outside, wrapped his arms around me, and spent nearly an hour explaining himself. He only wanted to know whether I would get jealous over him, he said.

Then he kissed my forehead and promised, "This was the first time, and it will be the last."

Now Sienna was trying on my dresses one after another in my walk-in closet.

She even pulled out my watches and jewelry, started a livestream, and asked their friends to choose the look that made her seem most like Mrs. Ashford.

She fastened a pair of earrings and turned toward the camera. "What about this one?"

Callum sat nearby. He looked up briefly. "The silver suits you better."

Laughter burst from the livestream.

Someone asked why I had not appeared.

Sienna settled back against the sofa with a helpless smile. "Lucia must still be upset. I only agreed to help Callum with his anniversary challenge. I didn't expect her to move out for real."

Callum answered for her. "Give her a few days of space. She'll come home when she's done being angry."

Not long afterward, his messages arrived.

[Tell me when you reach the apartment safely.]

[This is the same anniversary game we play every year. There is no reason to question our entire marriage over it.]

[If you want your things, I had the staff pack them for you.]

I did not reply.

The following afternoon, I returned to the house and discovered that the lock no longer recognized my fingerprint.

Sienna eventually opened the door for me.

She wore my watch on her wrist and my slippers on her feet. The bed in the primary suite had been remade with the pale blue linens she preferred. My toiletries had been swept into a cardboard box.

Even our wedding portrait had been taken down and propped against the wall. Stacked boxes concealed half of my face and half of Callum's in the photograph.

Callum was standing in the living room. The moment he saw me, relief flashed unmistakably in his eyes.

"I knew you'd come back."

He pushed the box toward me, gentling his voice. "Lucia, we've been married for seven years. You know Sienna is only a friend. Once the game ends, everything will go back to normal."

Sienna leaned against the bedroom doorway. "Would you like me to move into the guest room?"

She asked the question, but did not move an inch.

Callum glanced at me.

I picked up the box.

"Is this everything?"

The smile faded from his lips. "You came back only for your things?"

"Yes."

He studied me for several seconds. A trace of unease crossed his face before familiar certainty covered it again.

"Fine. If you need a few days to calm down, I'll give them to you. But when the seven days are over, we are going to talk."

I said nothing. I carried the box through the front door.

Callum did not stop me this time either.

By the end of the week, I would no longer be Lucia Ashford.

Two years later, I separated Marcelli Group's legitimate shipping and risk-management operations into a company of my own.The Marcelli family provided the initial resources, but I personally earned every contract, every shipping route, and every vote of confidence from the board. There was no red carpet or elaborate ceremony on opening day.My team bought a cake and gathered in the conference room to celebrate. Written across the top were the words:[Lucia, welcome back to your own life.]I studied them for a long moment, then smiled and blew out the candles.Over the years, Callum occasionally sent things through intermediaries. The first year, he sent the new company history containing all the photographs that had once been removed. The second, he returned the work journals I had left in our house. This year, there was only a card.[Happy anniversary.]The words had been crossed out. Beneath them, Callum had written:[I'm sorry. I forgot we no longer have an anniversary.]I replaced

After Callum released his statement, footage from the anniversary gala spread online.Viewers recognized the Ashford family ring on Sienna's hand and saw her standing onstage as though she were Callum's wife. Soon, people uncovered records of the games from the previous three years. The bets, the secret recordings, and the laughter were all dragged into public view. The backlash escalated quickly. Some accused Sienna of intruding into a marriage. Others demanded to know why Callum had needed his wife's pain as proof that she loved him.The friends who participated deleted their posts. Several contacted me privately and asked me to explain that they had only been joking because we were close and had never intended any harm.I did not respond. The people who caused the harm did not get to decide whether their intentions erased it.Sienna published a long statement of her own.She claimed she had only cooperated with the anniversary game, and that everything she did had been accepted by b

Callum waited outside Marcelli Group headquarters for three hours.By the time my meeting ended, the night wind had drained the color from his face. The moment I stepped outside, he hurried toward me."Lucia, we need to talk."One of the guards moved forward. I raised a hand and signaled him to stop."Business hours are over. Mr. Ashford and I have nothing professional to discuss."The words Mr. Ashford stopped him in place. In seven years, I had never addressed him that way.Callum held out a document. It was a newly produced history of Ashford Group. My name had been restored to its rightful place as cofounder. Behind it were an equity compensation agreement and an offer for me to return."The company needs you," he said. Then, more quietly, "I need you too."I did not accept the papers."If the company lacks a director, hire one. Whatever you need personally is yours to resolve."His face went pale."I know I was wrong. I was simply too sure that you loved me. My parents had a terri

Sienna had only sprained her ankle.By the time Callum reached the hospital, her scans were complete. The doctor said nothing was broken and she would recover after a few days of rest. With reddened eyes, Sienna caught his sleeve."Did you miss the final hearing with Lucia because of me?"Callum was silent for a moment. Then he placed the court's divorce decree in front of her.Sienna stared at it. Expectation quickly surfaced in her eyes."So you're truly free now. Callum, during those seven days, did you ever see me as your wife, even for a moment?"He pulled his arm away, his expression turning cold."I told you that Lucia is the only woman I love. If my lack of boundaries led you to misunderstand me, that is my fault. But do not treat my divorce as permission to cross another line."He left Sienna in the nurse's care and returned to the house alone. The silence inside was suffocating. My side of the walk-in closet was completely empty. There were no bottles on my vanity, no familia

For the next thirty days, Callum never truly apologized.Instead, he continued to document the passing time in the group chat.[Day One. She hasn't come back.][Day Five. Her resignation is final.][Day Ten. She had everything she owned removed from the house.]At first, his friends continued to joke. Some said I had stayed angry too long. Others advised Callum to send flowers and give me an excuse to return with my pride intact. But he still refused to accept that this was not an argument in which he only had to wait for me to yield.[She won't throw away a seven-year marriage.][She'll change her mind before the final hearing.]On the twentieth day, Callum sent me a photograph of the primary bedroom. The pale blue sheets were gone, and our wedding portrait had been rehung above the bed.[The room is back to normal.]I did not respond. On the twenty-fifth day, he sent the new version of Ashford Group's anniversary film. Every photograph from the company's founding years had been resto

  • The Heiress He Thought Would Stay   Chapter 5

The laughter in the living room died the moment Callum saw the signed settlement. The countdown on the wall stopped at one.The person filming forgot to lower his phone. The camera remained trained on Callum, just as it had remained trained on me for the past three years, waiting to capture a breakdown that would prove how deeply I loved him. This time, however, the only thing that returned to the house was a binding agreement.Callum flipped immediately to the final page. When he confirmed that the signature was mine, his expression darkened. He called me at once. The airport was issuing its final boarding call. I stopped in front of the gate and answered."Lucia, do you know what you signed?""Yes.""These aren't the fake papers we used to tease you before." His voice was taut. "The division of property, ownership of the house, attorney certification, all of it is real.""That is why I sent it."His friends finally recovered enough to intervene."Lucia is taking it too seriously this
