Chapter 1

Mason was standing right beside Audrey when my name disappeared from my state science fair submission.

She’d used his tablet to get into my shared folder, replaced the presentation I’d spent nine months preparing with joke slides, and changed both my sampling dates and the list of authors. Where my name should’ve been, it now said Audrey Blake.

An email from my faculty adviser appeared in the corner of the screen. Why had I submitted something completely different from the version that had passed the preliminary review?

“You gave her access to my files?” I turned the tablet toward Mason.

He’d just come from lacrosse practice, his hair still damp. At the look on my face, he swallowed the mint he’d been sucking on. “I told her she could change the cover slide. She had a crappy day and thought it’d make you laugh.” He reached for the tablet. “There’s an older version, right? Just restore it.”

I kept hold of it. “She changed my raw data. The judges are going to think I made it up.”

Audrey stood in the lab doorway, twisting the sleeve of the uniform jacket she’d received that semester. “Nora, I didn’t know it was such a big deal. You and Mason joke around all the time.”

“It’s a big enough deal that I spent every Saturday morning taking samples while you two were asleep.” I opened the submission log. The deadline had passed seventeen minutes earlier.

I’d slipped on the frozen riverbank collecting the winter data. Mason had carried my sample case that morning, soaked his sneakers, and teased me about caring more about river water than our weekend dates. He knew what those records had taken. He’d listened while I practiced my presentation.

Audrey had changed one slide’s conclusion to [Nora’s groundbreaking discovery: Mason is the hottest guy alive.]

Mason’s mouth twitched when he saw it, but he didn’t quite smile. “Okay, that’s ridiculous.” He finally looked at her. “Delete it. Don’t change anything else.” Then he turned back to me. “She wasn’t trying to hurt you. Be mad at me if you want. I should’ve been watching.”

“Could you listen to what I’m actually saying?”

“I am listening.” He sounded frustrated now. “You think she’s sabotaging you. Would she seriously use my name in some dumb joke if that was what she wanted?”

He looked at the screen again and frowned, then lowered his voice. “I’ll go explain it to your adviser with you, okay? Just don’t do this here. The whole hallway can hear us.”

“First, get her out of my account.”

Audrey’s eyes filled. “You think I’m going to do something else to you?”

Mason shoved his hands into his pockets. “She’s only been here a few months. She barely knows anyone. What’s she supposed to say when you come at her like that?”

I looked at him. He could see what had happened to my submission, and he was still asking me to spare Audrey the embarrassment.

“What about my competition?”

“I said I’d help you fix it. Can you trust me for once?” He bit his lip. “Or is this not even about the files? Are you pissed because I’ve been helping her rehearse for graduation?”

I saved the login history instead of answering.

We’d had this argument eight times already. I’d try to talk about something that had actually happened, and somehow we’d end up discussing whether I was jealous of the attention he gave Audrey.

Usually, I went after him. His parents had left him with his grandfather when he was seven, and I knew how afraid he was of being left again.

But nine months of my work were on that screen, and he was waiting for me to explain that I wasn’t jealous.

“Go home,” I said. “I need to email my adviser.”

His face tightened. “So you’re going to shut me out, then tell me I don’t care.”

“I need some quiet.”

He stood there a few more seconds before putting a vending-machine granola bar on the desk. “You skipped lunch. Whatever. Apparently, I can’t say anything right.”

He left with Audrey. As the door swung shut, I heard her saying it was only a joke that had gone a little too far.

I contacted my adviser, asked him to preserve my preliminary submission and put the altered files on hold, then revoked every sharing permission. By the time I finished, it was dark outside.

There was another unanswered email in my inbox: a housing confirmation from the summer research program I’d heard from after getting into Harvard in April. I’d been considering giving up the paid placement to spend the summer in Denver. Mason had chosen a college in Colorado and wanted me to stay close to home, too.

I hadn’t given a final answer. Now I accepted the housing offer, attached my enrollment confirmation, and hit send.

My phone lit up. Audrey had left a voice message apologizing for touching my work. Apparently, she’d forgotten to stop recording, because other voices followed hers.

Tyler spoke in the background. [You’re seriously not going after Nora?]

Mason sounded sulky. [I already said I’d help. What else does she want? The second Audrey comes up, she won’t even talk to me.]

[Want to bet when she’ll call?]

There was a pause, then Mason laughed. [She’s not going to miss my birthday. First one to text loses.]

I closed the message and put the granola bar in my backpack. The research program’s confirmation had arrived. In twelve days, I’d be gone.

Cambridge had its first snow of the winter the day we met. I reached the coffee shop five minutes early and found Mason already sitting by the window. He wore a dark gray puffer jacket. The coffee beside him had stopped steaming. He got up as soon as he saw me, then checked himself, slowing down as though he was afraid of startling me. “What would you like?”“I’ll get my own.”He nodded and pulled out the chair across from him. I bought a hot cider, sat down, and folded my scarf in my lap. He’d lost some weight and cut his hair. The familiar team wristband was gone.I’d expected seeing him again to hurt more. Sitting across from him, the first thought that came to me was oddly ordinary. [He probably doesn’t wear that old jersey anymore.]“How’s the research going?” he asked.“Good. The summer report’s finished. I’m working on new assignments now.”“I watched your presentation on the school website.” He paused. “You were really good.”I thanked him and waited. He looked down at his coff

The school’s written findings arrived in my inbox the following week. My research submission had been changed without my permission. My adviser sent that confirmation directly to the state science fair organizers, along with the preliminary version and my sampling records. The altered submission was withdrawn, and I was reinstated for the final round of judging.Audrey’s complaint was dismissed. The disciplinary finding for her involvement in changing my files would remain on her school record. She’d graduated, but that didn’t mean the school could no longer hold her responsible for what she’d done as a student.Mason’s part hadn’t been edited out, either. The record included the access he’d given her and his involvement in turning our breakup into a joke for everyone else. The school withdrew the senior committee’s recommendation that he receive a service award. He had to explain what had happened to the students involved and verify every fundraising announcement posted with his autho

The remote meeting was scheduled for four days later. I cleared my desk and put on my headphones. The vice principal and my adviser appeared first, followed by Grandpa and Mason, who was sitting in a different office.Audrey and her mother joined last. Audrey wore her school cardigan, her hair tucked neatly behind her ears. She looked away as soon as she saw me and started twisting a tissue between her fingers. The vice principal asked whether I was ready to give my statement. I said yes, but asked them to play Audrey’s airport recording first. In those few seconds, I sounded like I’d cornered her and threatened to make her life hell. Then came her voice, telling me not to touch her.“I was really scared,” Audrey said. “All I wanted was to apologize.”I opened my own file and played it from the beginning. She demanded to know why I’d come back for Mason, admitted using his access to get into my folder, and dismissed the ink that had soaked through my dad’s sketchbook.[You think being

The next day, my phone rang just after the research program’s orientation. Wendy’s name appeared on the screen. I stepped outside to answer and heard Mason instead.Behind me, someone from my new group called to ask whether I wanted to go to the library that afternoon. I nodded, pointed to the phone, and held up a hand to ask them to wait.Back at our table, the reference materials had already been divided up. My name was on a sticky note attached to one of the books. When we’d introduced our research that morning, nobody had interrupted me. Nobody had treated my report as an extension of whichever boy I happened to be dating. I’d been about to ask another girl how she handled outliers in her data.“Don’t hang up.” Mason’s voice was rough. “I just need a minute. Are you really all settled in?”I stopped beneath a tree. “You can text me if you need something. Don’t borrow other people’s phones.”“You muted me.”“I needed to sleep.”A door opened at his end. I heard Wendy asking if he wa

“I’m going to spend the summer doing something for myself,” I told him.Mason’s lips moved a couple of times. He seemed to be searching for a joke, something easy he could say to make this stop being serious. “Boston’s not the moon. You’ll come home when you’re done, right?”I shook my head. “I’m staying for the fall. I’ll be starting college.”“What about us?”The question came so quickly that it still hurt. “I sent you a message, Mason. The night you posted that video.”“We were kidding around. Tyler and everyone took their likes back.” He pulled out his phone. The count was down to ninety-something. “See? It’s not even two hundred.”I looked at the number and didn’t know how to make this any clearer. “I’m choosing not to be your girlfriend anymore. Even if every single person takes their like back, that won’t change.”Tyler finally stopped smiling. He stepped aside and stopped trying to plan our reconciliation for us.Audrey moved closer. “Please don’t fight over—”“Not now.” Mason

Wendy drove me to the airport the next afternoon. She hugged me, tucked a bag of pretzels into my backpack, and complained that airlines never gave you enough to eat. I promised to text when I landed, then wheeled my suitcase into the departures hall.I hadn’t expected to run into Tyler. He was looking down at his phone, but the moment he recognized me, he hurried over. “Knew you’d come. Mason should be out in ten minutes. He just texted.”“I have a flight.” I pulled my suitcase in front of me.He glanced at it without seeming to understand. “You’re taking him somewhere? He’s going to lose his mind.”“It’s just me.” But he was already calling Mason. A luggage cart came toward us, and I moved into the check-in line as Tyler announced into his phone, “Hurry up. Nora’s here.”I heard movement on the other end, then Mason’s voice. “Seriously? Don’t let her leave.”Tyler covered the microphone and grinned at me, asking whether he should hang on to my stuff. I shook my head, pointed to the l
