The misplaced Heiress

“There you two are.” Amara leaned against the frame, arms crossed. “What’s this I hear about the Aarhil heir being selfish?”

“Ah.” Sylas started.

“Don’t,” Lysandra said.

Amara’s brow rose. “Don’t what?”

“He has nothing useful to contribute.”

“I have plenty useful to contribute,” Sylas said. “For example, I can confirm that little cousin thinks the Aarhil heir is probably unbearable.”

“I said I imagine someone that rich would be unbearable.”

“And selfish,” Sylas added.

The returned Heir Alastair’s office looked exactly the way it had the morning he’d first walked back into it. He was dressed casually in a perfectly fitted beige linen shirt, three buttons undone and the sleeves pushed to his forearms, paired with dark Brunello Cucinelli trousers. Three contract files were open in front of him and a fourth balanced on his knee, the Aarhil Group seal stamped across each one. The first contained projections for one of Aarhil Group’s newest acquisitions. The second concerned an international supply agreement. The third had been placed directly in front of him by one of his executives with the word urgent written across the cover. The fourth concerned a new luxury hotel acquisition in Monaco. His phone buzzed against the desk, he ignored it and opened the third file, the name Roger Amsterdam caught his eye before his phone vibrated three more times. This time, he reached for it, the screen showed messages from Elliot. Elliot: Sir, a reminder regardi

The misplaced Heiress“Why?”Sylas looked at Lysandra for a moment before leaning back in his chair. “Why what?”“You’re the one who asked if I’d heard from Altair. Why do you want to know?”“Because you haven’t mentioned him all day.”“So?”“So,” Sylas said, gesturing toward the mountain of papers scattered across the table, “you’ve had plenty to say about everything else. Suppliers, investors, staffing, expansion, contracts. You even gave me a ten-minute lecture about logistics.”“Because you asked.”“I know. I’m just saying, you’ve been unusually talkative today.”Amara smiled from across the table. “Except about your husband.”Lysandra stared at both of them. “Oh, my God! You’re both doing that thing again where you decide there’s some huge meaning behind something completely normal.”Sylas laughed but there was no humour in it. “Lysa, you married the man. I don’t think asking whether you’ve spoken to him qualifies as that much big of a deal.”Lysandra sighed and pushed a loose st

The misplaced Heiress The next morning, Sylas didn’t bother knocking at all. “Rise and shine, Madam CEO-in-training.” He dropped a thick binder onto her desk. “Today we build you a map.”“A map.”“Of everything you now technically own a piece of.” He flipped it open to a page dense with boxes and connecting lines. “Behold. The Vane Group family tree, minus the actual family drama.”Amara arrived a moment later, coffee in hand, and settled into the chair across from her without preamble. “Yesterday we showed you the shape. Today we show you what’s holding it up.”“I thought the board was holding it up.”“The board runs it,” Sylas said. “The trust owns it.”Lysandra frowned. “What trust?”Amara set her cup down. “Your grandfather didn’t leave Vane Group to any one person. When the company went public, decades ago, he put the controlling shares into a family trust instead. Sixty-one percent of the company is Class A voting stock. The remaining thirty-nine percent is Class B and was publ

The misplaced HeiressMorning came fast, Lysandra had barely gotten one foot out of bed when three knocks came from her door. “Who is it?” She was met with silence. “Just come in! And since when did you learn how to knock?”Sylas let himself into her room, two mugs in hand. “Rise and shine, madam soon-to-be-terrifying businesswoman. And for the record, I do know how to knock. I just don’t do it when I don’t want to.”“It’s not even eight.” “It’s practically noon in productive-people time.” He handed her a mug, already halfway out the door. “Also, drink that fast. Auntie A wants us downstairs in fifteen minutes, and she said ‘properly dressed,’ which, coming from her, means considerably nicer than whatever that is.” He gestured vaguely at her pyjamas, patterned with small cartoon ducks.Lysandra decided not to dignify that with a response and fifteen minutes later, they found Amara in the study, laptop open, a stack of folders squared off in front of her.“Good morning, Mommy.” “Goo

It’s good to be honest with yourself and everyone around you.” “Mother!” Lysandra blushed softly. “Mm.” Amara crossed the room instead, pressing a kiss to the top of Lysandra’s head, her thumb brushing lightly over the damp, salt-stiff patch on her cheek. “You’ve been crying again.” “I’m fine.” “I didn’t ask if you were fine. I said you’ve been

The misplaced HeiressInstead, what appeared on the screen was something she had never expected to see.Five missed calls and eight messages from an unknown number. She opened the chat to see the messages. “Hello, it’s me.” “Right, perhaps I should’ve told you who I was before calling.” “It’s your husband, Altair.” “I’ve called four times now, I think you’re busy but it’s no biggie. I just miss my lovely wife is all.” “Hope you’re not thinking about Keller, he doesn’t deserve a wonderful lady such as yourself.” “I got a puppy, named him Chauncey. He betrayed me today though. What with his adorable little face and all.” The next was a video text of an adorable golden retriever puppy chasing its little tail in frantic circles, occasionally stumbling over his own paws before immediately trying again.“Oops, that call was by accident, Chauncey jumped on me and I startled. I miss you. Hope this isn’t creepy at all.” Lysandra smiled at his thoughtfulness and realized that, under dif
