Rosalie's POV

I looked up. Lucian was looking down at me from close range, and my heart dropped a full beat.

I stepped back and put some space between us.

My parents lit up the moment they registered it was him. "Lucian — we thought we might not see you tonight."

Lucian smiled, barely, in that way that was almost invisible, and said something back to my parents. Then Vanessa pushed herself to the front, bright-eyed and beaming. "Hi — I'm Vanessa."

Lucian gave a small nod, barely glanced at her,

Rosalie's POVLucian had me trapped between him and the kitchen island — one hand braced on the counter, the other tilting my jaw so my face was turned another way — and then he kissed me, dragging his lips slowly along my cheek like he had all the time in the world.Every single one made my heart slam harder. This wasn't like before, all heat and urgency. There was something slower to it now, something careful, like he was savoring something he didn't want to rush.I grabbed his wrist. "We're in the kitchen…"Lucian turned my face back toward him. "Nothing wrong with that."Then he lifted me up and set me on the counter in one clean move, stepping between my legs and pulling my hips flush against him before I even registered what was happening. It all happened so fast I let out a little gasp and grabbed onto his neck just to hold on. I could've sworn he laughed — low, quiet — and then he dipped his head and kissed me.He bit my lower lip, dragged his tongue across it, then pushed pas

  • The Heiress No One Wanted   Ch48 - My pride

Rosalie's POVTheir voices dropped after that and I didn't catch the rest.Lunch with Max moved fast. I'd expected it to stay polite and surface-level, but he was good at finding things to talk about. Turned out we'd both gone to school on the West Coast — we ended up trading stories about a terrible Italian place we'd both made the mistake of trying, and what we'd do on weekends, including this old bowling alley that was basically a college institution. The conversation closed the distance between us quickly, and pulled up memories of that time in my life I hadn't thought about in a while.Things were simpler back then. I didn't know yet that the parents I'd grown up with weren't my birth parents. None of it was this complicated.Max pushed pasta around his plate. "You ever think about going back to visit? You've probably got people from school still out there."I touched my cheek. "Actually yeah — maybe next month? Once I get through this one big design project, things should ease

  • The Heiress No One Wanted   Ch47 - Boss's daughter 3

Rosalie's POV"Max? How did you—"Vanessa cut me off before I could finish. "What are you doing here?"She was gripping her soaked jacket, brow tight — mortified, I think, that Max of all people was seeing her like this.Max looked completely at ease. "I'm here to see Rosalie."Vanessa's face went red in real time. Her feet seemed to stop working.Meanwhile the colleagues who hadn't fully dispersed were already staring. "Okay, who is that?""You know Nora, right? The one who comes in to deal with procurement? This is her older brother.""Oh — yeah, I remember Nora. The blunt one who never really got along with Vanessa.""The resemblance is actually kind of insane."Max turned and waved at them easily, which sent a quiet ripple of excitement through the group. He turned back and held up a paper bag. "My dad had some cigars he wanted to pass along to your father. I was in the area anyway, so.""Oh, right—" I reached out to take it without thinking. Natural as anything.Until I noticed t

Rosalie's POV"You think the boss is gonna fire Rosalie outright?""He's at that industry conference — probably won't be back till the afternoon.""Isn't this too small to get fired over?""Small? His daughter got humiliated. How is that small?"Then a quieter voice pushed through the crowd. "Rosalie isn't like that."I turned. Kate, face flushed, talking to the people around her. "Don't take sides before you actually know what happened."The murmuring dropped a little.Celia looked at her. "Think carefully about where you're standing, Kate

  • The Heiress No One Wanted   Ch45 - Boss's daughter

Rosalie's POVHere's what whoever walked in actually saw:Vanessa's pink wool blazer soaked through on one side, tea dripping down onto her white skirt, her head bowed in disbelief at her ruined outfit. And me, holding an empty cup pointed in her direction, nothing left inside but a soggy tea bag."Oh my god—" the person at the door breathed.Vanessa let go of my wrist and looked up at me. "Why did you throw that at me?"I blinked. Not angry — wounded. Like she was the victim, and she'd gotten there first."It was an accident. And you were the one yanking my arm — I told you to stop."She furrowed her brow, expression going soft and pained. "So you're saying I deliberately soaked my own brand new outfit first thing in the morning?"The doorway was filling up. People crowding in, murmuring."Is that the new Lucci set from this season? That thing costs a fortune. Completely ruined.""There's no way she did it to herself — who shows up to work looking like that on purpose?""This is real

  • The Heiress No One Wanted   Ch44 - He loves you?

Rosalie's POV"Okay, what's going on with you?" Kate caught me in the break room and gave me a look. "Something good happen?""Nothing — just work, same as always."She squinted. "Nope. Your face is glowing."I touched my cheek. "It's probably just my blush today.""That is not blush." She raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying herself. "I'm guessing your husband did something that put you in a good mood."Last night came back to me and my face went warm before I could stop it."See!" Kate laughed."Stop it."We were going back and forth, talking about what was going on in procurement, both of us laughing — and then Kate just stopped. Went completely still. I followed her eyes.Vanessa. Arms crossed, expression dark, staring at us."Good morning, Vanessa — sorry, were we being too loud?" Kate assumed it was her fault.Vanessa walked straight past her like she wasn't there and stopped in front of me. "Come with me. We need to talk."I glanced at Kate's uncomfortable face, then looked back
