Finding the Sullivan family took another two weeks, a trail of old addresses and public records leading eventually to a modest home in Sacramento, a world away from the Dalton mansion but, Ariel suspected, not so different from the apartment she herself had grown up in.

"I want to go," Ariel said, when the lawyer finally confirmed the address. "Not send a letter, not have the family lawyer make a cold call. I want to be there, in person, the way I would have wanted someone to be there for me."

Finding the Sullivan family took another two weeks, a trail of old addresses and public records leading eventually to a modest home in Sacramento, a world away from the Dalton mansion but, Ariel suspected, not so different from the apartment she herself had grown up in."I want to go," Ariel said, when the lawyer finally confirmed the address. "Not send a letter, not have the family lawyer make a cold call. I want to be there, in person, the way I would have wanted someone to be there for me.""Ariel," Mrs. Dalton said gently, "you understand this might not go the way it went for us. Not every family reacts to news like this with open arms.""I understand that better than anyone," Ariel said. "That's exactly why I think it matters that it's me who tells them, not a lawyer reading from a script."Mr. Dalton studied her for a long moment, something like reluctant pride in his expression. "All right. I'll arrange the trip. But you're not going alone."Nathan came, along with Jim, who'd i

The call came on a Sunday afternoon, Mr. Dalton's face going carefully blank in the particular way Ariel had learned meant something serious, as he listened to the family lawyer on speakerphone in the study."Say that again," Mr. Dalton said slowly. "You're certain.""As certain as we can be without a formal investigation," the lawyer's voice crackled through the phone. "Whitlow's legal team turned over additional records as part of his cooperation agreement. It appears Delia Alvarez's arrangement with him wasn't limited to a single incident. There's evidence of at least one other switch, arranged the same way, around the same time period, for a different family entirely."Ariel felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her. "Another family," she repeated. "Another two children, switched, the same way we were.""It appears so," the lawyer confirmed. "The records are incomplete. Alvarez didn't keep meticulous documentation, understandably, given what she was actually doing. But there's enou

  • The Heiress Nobody Wanted    Britney's Acceptance Letter

Britney found Ariel in the library after school on an ordinary Tuesday, an envelope clutched in her hand, her expression somewhere between disbelief and something Ariel hadn't seen from her before, real, unguarded pride."I got in," Britney said, holding up the envelope. "Northwestern. Pre-law. On my own application, my own essays, no family name doing the heavy lifting, because I specifically asked them not to reference it.""Britney, that's incredible." Ariel stood, genuinely delighted. "You didn't tell me you were even applying there.""I didn't tell anyone," Britney admitted. "I was terrified of what it would mean if I didn't get in on my own merit, after everything. I needed to know I could actually do something myself, without wealth or family name smoothing the path." She sat down across from Ariel, still staring at the letter like it might disappear if she looked away. "I used to think being enough meant being the only daughter who mattered. Turns out it just meant being someo

  • The Heiress Nobody Wanted    Chapter 30: Standing Together

The Carters hosted a small dinner the following week, ostensibly to celebrate the article's fair, accurate telling, though Ariel suspected it was really about something else entirely, a chance for both families to be seen together publicly, deliberately, now that the worst of the scandal had passed."People will still whisper," Diane Carter said, seated at the head of her own table with the easy authority of a woman who'd hosted a thousand dinners exactly like this one. "That's simply what people do, when a story this large touches a family this visible. The difference is what they'll be whispering now.""What will they be whispering?" Ariel asked."That the Daltons and Carters weathered something enormous together, and came out the other side closer for it, rather than torn apart." Diane's smile was sharp, satisfied. "That's a considerably better rumor than the one we started with a month ago."Richard Carter raised his glass. "To honesty," he said. "however uncomfortable it turned o

  • The Heiress Nobody Wanted    Chapter 29: Sasha Owed

Mrs. Dalton invited Sasha to the mansion the following weekend, a gesture that surprised Ariel until she understood the reasoning behind it, a debt eighteen years overdue, finally being acknowledged rather than avoided.Sasha arrived nervous, clearly uncertain of her welcome, standing stiffly in the same front hall where she'd once worked as staff before everything fell apart."I wasn't sure you'd actually want to see me," Sasha admitted, once Mrs. Dalton led her into the sitting room. "Given everything I put this family through, the scheme, the scandal, all of it.""You made a terrible choice once, a long time ago," Mrs. Dalton said. "And then, years later, you made a good one, at real risk to yourself, that helped my family finally understand something we'd been denied the truth about for eighteen years." She poured tea with steady hands, an unusual composure for a conversation this fraught. "I'm not interested in pretending your past didn't happen. I am interested in acknowledging

  • The Heiress Nobody Wanted    Chapter 28: What Emma Lost

The article's fallout at Crestmore hit Emma harder than anyone else, a fact Ariel hadn't fully anticipated until she watched Emma sit alone at lunch for the first time in the two years Ariel had known of her, Lila conspicuously absent from the table they'd shared for years."Lila stopped answering my texts," Emma told Ariel, finding her at the tutoring table with none of her old sharpness left, just a kind of hollowed-out exhaustion. "Apparently having a father who orchestrated a felony makes you less fun to be friends with. Who knew.""That's not fair to you," Ariel said. "You didn't do any of this.""Doesn't matter. People don't separate it that cleanly." Emma stared down at her untouched lunch. "I used to be someone people wanted to sit with. Now I'm the girl whose dad is probably going to prison. It's strange how fast that flips, when you've spent your whole life on the comfortable side of it."Priya, listening from across the table, spoke up with more gentleness than her usual bl
