LOGIN"I have been looking for you everywhere, Genevieve." Sebastian Voss sat on the barstool close to her.
Genevieve could only nod, slowly recovering from the bit of shock she had experienced. "What can I get for you, sir?" The bartender asked. "Just scotch." He dismissed him and faced her holding her in place with his steel coloured eyes. He was a fairly attractive man with mid length hair which he pulled into a man bun. He was tall and had good muscle mass. What were the odds of seeing her soon-to-be ex-husband's biggest enemy in the Bed and Breakfast joint she was hiding in after a scandal? Her gut told her that this wasn't a coincidence. And the fact that he had mentioned that he had been looking for her everywhere, he wanted something from her. They waited for the bartender to serve Sebastian Voss before starting their conversation. "You said you have been looking for me. Is there a particular reason?" Genevieve asked, sipping from her glass of cocktail. The almost syrupy taste glided through her tongue and down her throat. "I heard about everything that happened. I'm sorry for your loss." He started by sympathising with her on her misfortune. "Thank you." She frowned, taken back by his thoughtful words. Genevieve didn't really know much of the back story between Sebastian Voss and her soon to be ex-husband, Nicholas. But she knew enough to know both men disliked each other greatly to the point of hatred. "Now you might have been wondering why I had been looking for you?" He smiled, noticing her frown. "Yes I'm." She really wanted to know what he wanted. "Now both of us have something in common. Something or rather, someone that has caused us both a great deal of pain." Sebastian’s smile was deliberate. Genevieve’s chest tightened. Nicholas. Of course. "You mean my husband?" she asked carefully, her voice betraying only a fraction of her unease. "Your soon-to-be ex-husband," Sebastian corrected smoothly, lifting his glass of scotch to his lips. His eyes never left hers as he drank, the amber liquid catching the dim light of the bar. "Nicholas ruined me, and I don't believe for a second he hasn’t ruined you too." Genevieve bristled, instinctively defensive. "That’s not something I should be discussing with you." "But it’s something you must have thought about." His voice was low, persuasive, the kind of tone that felt dangerous because it slipped so easily into the cracks of her doubt. "You see, Genevieve, Nicholas may have underestimated me. He may even believe he’s broken you. But I think he’s wrong about both of us." She looked away, focusing on the condensation trailing down her cocktail glass. His words were digging under her skin, scratching at truths she hadn’t dared voice aloud. "What exactly are you proposing, Mr. Voss?" She asked him directly, not bothering to beat around the bush. She was right he wanted something. Sebastian leaned in, the faintest curl of amusement tugging at his mouth. "A partnership. You and I, aligned against Nicholas. It will drive him mad, Genevieve, to see us together." She blinked at him, momentarily at a loss. "Together? You mean?" "Marriage." The word rolled off his tongue as though it were the most natural suggestion in the world. "You want revenge from him. I want revenge. Together, we can have it."Genevieve had only meant to borrow a pen from Sebastian's study, nothing more. He had stepped out briefly to take a call, and she wandered in quietly, scanning the neat rows of drawers along the side of his desk, searching for something simple to write with. She pulled open the top drawer, expecting nothing but paperclips and spare pens, but instead, her eyes landed on something that made her pause completely.A small folded piece of paper sat tucked carefully in the corner of the drawer, slightly worn at the edges. She recognized her own handwriting immediately, a quick note she had scribbled weeks earlier during one of their strategy meetings, reminding him about a phone call he needed to return before noon. It was such a small, meaningless thing. She was certain he would have thrown it away within minutes of reading it.Beside it sat another note, this one even smaller, just a few words she had written one evening when they were reviewing wedding vendor contracts, a joke about Aunt
The kitchen smelled faintly of fresh coffee when Genevieve walked downstairs that morning, still tying the belt of her robe, her hair loose and slightly messy from sleep. She paused in the doorway, blinking in surprise at the sight of a warm cup already sitting on the counter, exactly where she usually stood, made exactly the way she liked it, two sugars, a small splash of cream, nothing more."How did you know I would be down at this exact time?" she asked, walking over slowly and picking up the cup.Sebastian sat at the table, scrolling through something on his phone, though a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "You come down every morning around this time," he said simply. "I noticed."Genevieve took a slow sip, surprised at how perfectly it matched what she would have made for herself. "You remembered how I take my coffee.""It is not difficult information to retain," Sebastian said, though something in his tone suggested he had paid closer attention than he wanted to
The conference room buzzed with quiet excitement that morning, a different energy than the careful, tense meetings Genevieve had grown used to over the past few weeks. A tall executive named Preston stood near the front of the room, clicking through slides filled with bright green numbers and confident projections, his voice smooth and practiced as he walked through the details of a potential acquisition."Halden Manufacturing," Preston said, gesturing toward the screen. "Profitable for six straight years. Strong client base. Excellent growth potential in the coming decade. This is, without question, one of the strongest acquisition opportunities we have seen this year."Around the table, several senior executives nodded in agreement, murmuring quiet approval. Genevieve sat quietly beside Sebastian, listening carefully, though something about the numbers on the screen tugged uncomfortably at the back of her mind. She told herself it was nothing, that everyone in the room clearly saw s
Genevieve stood in front of the mirror that morning, smoothing down the front of her navy blue blazer, feeling a strange nervousness settle into her stomach that she had not expected. Sebastian had asked her to join him at his office for a meeting with investors, and though he had explained it simply the night before, something about the idea still made her hands feel unsteady."You will only need to sit beside me," Sebastian had told her the night before, though she noticed now that he had not actually promised that at all. When she walked into the large glass conference room later that morning, six people were already seated around the long table, folders and laptops spread out in front of them. Sebastian stood near the head of the table, and the moment he saw her, he smiled warmly and gestured toward the seat directly beside his own, not somewhere off to the side, not somewhere quiet and forgettable."Everyone," Sebastian said, his voice calm and confident as the room settled, "thi
Nicholas stood at the window of his office, staring down at the busy street below without really seeing any of it. Behind him, his lead adviser, a thin, nervous man named Ferris, shuffled papers quietly on the desk, waiting for Nicholas to speak first."Tell me again," Nicholas said slowly, not turning around, "how three of my longtime business partners suddenly decided this week that they need to distance themselves from me."Ferris cleared his throat carefully. "They did not give exact reasons, sir. But given everything that has happened with the wedding sabotage, I believe they are worried about being caught in the middle of whatever conflict is growing between you and Mr. Voss."Nicholas turned sharply, his eyes narrowing. "They are afraid of him.""It appears that way, sir," Ferris admitted.Nicholas let out a short, humorless laugh, running a hand roughly through his hair. "I built relationships with those men for years. Years, Ferris. And the moment Sebastian Voss raises an eye
The doorbell rang loudly through the quiet house, and Genevieve looked up from the notebook in her lap, confused for a moment since she was not expecting any visitors that afternoon. She walked toward the door slowly, and the moment she pulled it open, a bright, familiar voice filled the entryway before she even had time to react."There she is!" Aunt Gigi shouted, throwing her arms wide open. "Look at you! Look at that glow!"Genevieve barely had time to smile before Gigi pulled her into a tight, warm hug, squeezing her so hard that Genevieve laughed out loud, a real laugh that surprised even herself. "Aunt Gigi, what are you doing here?""Visiting my favorite niece," Gigi said, pulling back to hold Genevieve at arm's length, studying her carefully from head to toe. "And clearly, I did not need to worry as much as I did. Look at you. You look better than you have in years."Genevieve felt heat rise to her cheeks. "I look the same as always.""You do not," Gigi said firmly, shaking he
