Shock speared through Genevieve as she couldn't believe what she just heard. She wasn't the only one because a lot of mutterings came from the other occupants in the room. "Mr Hayes, can you repeat the last line? Perhaps, I didn't hear it properly." Her uncle, Silas Harrington laughed nervously, asking the lawyer to reread the last bits of the will.Today was the grand reading of Tobias Harrington, her late grandfather's will. Tobias Harrington was a very wealthy man before he died. At one point in his life, he had been the richest man in his state. Now all his relatives both close and distant were seated in the boardroom of The Harrington Empire listening to the details of his will. "In the words of my deceased client," The lawyer cleared his throat, "I, Tobias Harrington, hereby devise and bequeath eighty percent of everything I own to Nicholas Blackwood. I further direct that this decision shall be final and binding, and no relative or third party shall contest, dispute or inter

"Why did you do all these?" She already knew but she wanted to hear him say it. She wanted to hear the words fall from his lips. "You still don't get it, Genevieve." He laughed hysterically. "I never married you because I loved you. I married you because of your inheritance. It's nothing personal, I hope someday you will be able to understand." He laughed like what he said was funny. But she won't break under his watch. She wrapped up her emotions in a metaphorical ball and shoved it down her throat. Later she would deal with them but right now she had to be strong even though she wanted to collapse on the floor."If you had simply served me a divorce, I wouldn't have objected. If you had sold the house, I wouldn't have minded but transferring my properties, Nicholas you have crossed the line." Her voice was firm."And what are you going to do?" He taunted. Genevieve kept silent."You have nothing, nobody to turn to. All of your connections will be mine. No-one would want to help yo

"I have been looking for you everywhere, Genevieve." Sebastian Voss sat on the barstool close to her.Genevieve could only nod, slowly recovering from the bit of shock she had experienced. "What can I get for you, sir?" The bartender asked. "Just scotch." He dismissed him and faced her holding her in place with his steel coloured eyes. He was a fairly attractive man with mid length hair which he pulled into a man bun. He was tall and had good muscle mass. What were the odds of seeing her soon-to-be ex-husband's biggest enemy in the Bed and Breakfast joint she was hiding in after a scandal? Her gut told her that this wasn't a coincidence. And the fact that he had mentioned that he had been looking for her everywhere, he wanted something from her. They waited for the bartender to serve Sebastian Voss before starting their conversation. "You said you have been looking for me. Is there a particular reason?" Genevieve asked, sipping from her glass of cocktail. The almost syrupy tas

Genevieve walked back into her suite and shut the door. The lock clicked soft in the quiet. She kicked off her shoes and placed Sebastian’s black business card on the bedside table. The silver letters caught the soft light from the lamp. She told herself she would throw it away in the morning. She even reached out once, fingers hovering above it, but she pulled her hand back. She could not make herself touch it again. She dropped onto the bed fully dressed. The sheets felt cool against her skin. She closed her eyes and waited for sleep. It did not come. Her body was tired, but her mind stayed wide awake, spinning faster than it had in weeks. The silence pressed in on her. With nothing to distract her, every thought came rushing back like a flood. She saw the boardroom again. The long table. The lawyer clearing his throat. Uncle Silas laughing that nervous laugh before he asked the lawyer to repeat the last line. Aunt Gigi shaking her head. Maurice’s angry face. Devon’s sharp words. An

Genevieve woke early the next morning and could not stay in bed. The moment her eyes opened, her mind started racing. She pushed the covers aside and stood up. The suite felt too quiet and too small. She began walking back and forth across the soft carpet, her bare feet making soft sounds with every step. Sebastian’s black business card sat on the coffee table in the middle of the room. The silver letters caught the morning light every time she passed it. It felt like the card was watching her, waiting for her to decide. She stopped in front of the table and picked up her phone. Her thumb moved across the screen and carefully typed his number. She stared at the digits for a long time. Her heart beat faster in her chest. Then, before she could change her mind, she deleted the whole number with one quick swipe and set the phone down again. “I can do this alone,” she said out loud to the empty room. Her voice sounded steady, but her hands felt shaky. “I do not need another man to fix my
