Chapter 2

Penulis: Luca Rowan
I pinned the briefcase in place and grabbed the cup from the coffee table. The coffee poured over the back of her hand and splashed onto the woman’s pale skirt.

She shrieked and let go.

"How dare you pour coffee on me!"

I moved the briefcase to the inside of the sofa and set down the cup.

"Can you understand me now? Don't touch it."

Coffee dripped from her fingertips, leaving a spreading brown stain across her skirt. She stared at the damage, then looked up at me, her face turning bright red.

"Marco bought me this dress! How are you going to pay me back?"

Marco?

I raised my eyes to hers.

"You mean Marco Moretti, the heir?"

"Who else?" She thrust the hand wearing a ruby ring toward me. "He gave me this gold card. Anything I want on this ship is mine for the taking."

Marco was my hotheaded little brother.

A few months ago, he lost a yacht in a race and got himself kicked out of our father's study. After that, he insisted on taking over the Royal, determined to prove to our father that he could accomplish something on his own.

Father had agreed to let him run it on a trial basis for one quarter. I had even approved the funds to renovate the casino for him.

The woman took my silence as a sign that I was afraid to cross her.

"Now that you know who I am, learn your place. Don't make me teach you some manners myself!"

She stuck out the toe of her shoe, still damp from the spilled coffee.

"Wipe my shoe clean and pay for my dress. Once I'm in a better mood, I might even let you stay in a cabin down below."

Julian immediately held out a white napkin to me.

"Miss Liliana Valenti is willing to give you a chance. You should be grateful."

I made no move to take it.

"She tried to snatch my luggage first. You saw it."

"All I saw was you throwing coffee on our VIP guest." He kept the napkin extended, his gaze fixed on the briefcase in my hand. "If you refuse to cooperate, we'll have to call security."

Liliana let out an icy laugh and settled into the chair she had occupied earlier.

"Now you want to leave? Too late! Get security in here and hold her. I want to see what makes her think she can act so high and mighty in front of me!"

Several crew members had gathered in the doorway.

One glanced at her soaked skirt and immediately looked away. The porter who had spoken up for me earlier was pressed against the edge of the crowd, his face pale. No one dared touch the reservation confirmation I had left on the table.

I picked it up and slipped it into my coat pocket.

"Get me whoever's in charge."

Liliana laughed.

"You still think anyone here is going to take your side?"

She waved the gold card.

"Marco is at the private club on the pier right now. He'll be coming aboard to have dinner with me soon. You'd better hope this gets settled before he arrives."

Julian had barely finished reporting the incident when hurried footsteps pounded down the corridor.

The cruise ship's general manager entered the room. His name tag read ‘Sebastian Ricci’.

He glanced at the cup on the table and my briefcase. Without asking a single question, he bent toward Liliana.

"I'm terribly sorry you've been treated this way."

She raised the back of her hand, still stained with coffee.

"Someone dared to lay a hand on me on a ship that flies the Moretti family flag. What do you think should happen to her?"

Sebastian's expression darkened. He turned to me.

"Apologize. Now!"

I answered the call.My father spoke first."Are you and Marco both aboard?""We are. Marco is in the next room."There was a brief silence on his end."Antonio has told me what happened. Are you hurt?""No.""What about the documents?"I looked at the briefcase beside the table."The seal is intact. I'll hand everything over to you personally tomorrow morning."I heard a chair scrape across the floor on his end."What are you going to do about Marco?""His trial appointment is suspended for one month. He'll work under Antonio to handle the aftermath. His personal expenses and compensation payments will come out of his own account."My father did not answer immediately."Then we'll do it your way."I released the hand resting on the briefcase clasp."He'll explain everything to you himself tomorrow morning.""Good." He paused, and his voice softened. "Get some rest. What would you like to eat tomorrow morning?"I glanced out the window. The lights along the pier were

Marco turned away from the window and stopped in front of me."Sis."I picked up my phone from the table and stood."Come with me."He glanced toward the doorway but asked no questions. He followed me out of the VIP lounge. Along the way, crew members stepped aside, still addressing him respectfully as Mr. Moretti.Back on the penthouse deck, a member of the security detail opened my suite for me and carried my briefcase inside.Antonio checked the seal before allowing the guards to leave."Bring us two dinners."I took the key card from him."We'll discuss everything else when I come out."Antonio acknowledged my instructions and closed the door behind him.Marco stood beside the sofa. Only when the lock clicked did his tense shoulders relax a little."Sis, I'm sorry."I placed my phone on the coffee table."Sit down."He sat and stared at the cracks across the screen. It took him a long moment to speak."I gave her the card. I was the one who told them to accommodate

Marco looked down at Sebastian's hand gripping his trouser leg. Then, he raised his eyes to Liliana."Step aside."The guards pried Sebastian's fingers loose and dragged him toward the gangway."Mr. Moretti!"Sebastian tried to look back, but a guard forced his shoulders down. The glass door closed, cutting off his desperate cries.Liliana stared at the doorway, her hand frozen around her purse. She walked over to Marco and lowered her voice."Darling, take me with you."He did not move."I won't change rooms, and I won't bring my friends over. We can leave the ship right now."She reached for his sleeve, but Marco removed her hand."After everything you've done, you still expect me to help you get out of this?"Get lost."She stared at him, her hand still suspended in the air. Marco turned away without another word.I handed the dinner reservation list to a crew member."Cancel it. Have her luggage brought out."Liliana whipped around to face me."Ms. Moretti, what h

I beckoned to the young man standing outside the door.He stepped inside, clutching the work badge he had just gotten back. When he saw Marco standing beside the table and the disarmed security guards, he stopped just short of it."Come here."He approached me and lowered his head."Ms. Moretti.""What's your name?""Lucas Sanna.""Did they ask you to sign a resignation form?""Yes. I haven't signed it yet." He gripped his name badge, his voice tight with tension. "They said I'd offended Mr. Moretti's VIP, and none of the family's ships would hire me again."Liliana cut in."I was just angry. He isn't going to lose his job. Ms. Moretti, do you really have to make such a big deal out of this over him?"I ignored her and took the name badge from Lucas."You told the truth on behalf of a guest, and they threw you out for it."He nodded.I placed his badge on the table and signaled to Antonio."Settle all his outstanding wages, and add a $100,000 bonus. I'll pay for it mysel

Marco's expression changed. He reached out to stop Liliana.I raised a hand."Let her speak."He remained where he was.Seeing his reaction, Liliana found a little courage and took a step forward."I'm not trying to disrespect you, but you can’t take out whatever’s going on between you and your sister on me. “He gave me the card, and his people arranged the room." She placed the gold card on the table but kept her fingertips on it. "If you want someone to answer for this, you should at least ask him first."I looked at Marco.Antonio opened the folder containing the quarterly reports and pulled out the trial appointment authorization attached to the front."The family's shipping operations are managed by Ms. Moretti. Mr. Moretti is serving a one-quarter trial appointment as the manager of the Royal. The authorization also bears Ms. Moretti's signature."Sebastian stared at the signature. Sweat trickled from his temple into his collar.I closed the folder and pushed it back

Marco's Adam's apple bobbed.Liliana finally sensed that something was wrong. Her hand froze around the gold card."Marco, you know her?"She reached for his arm again."Darling, she's completely out of line! Look what she did to my dress!"Marco pulled her hand away."Get away from me!"She tried to move closer anyway. A sharp slap cracked across her face.Liliana stumbled into the reception desk. Her purse hit the floor, sending her lipstick and perfume rolling toward a crew member's feet."You hit me?!""She's my sister, the eldest daughter of the Moretti family."Liliana pressed a hand to her cheek. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.Sebastian's hands began to tremble against the edge of the desk.Marco turned and stopped in front of me."Sis." He stood perfectly straight, but his hands were clenched at his sides. "I gave her the card. I was the one who told them to take care of her."The head of the family's security detail stepped forward. He placed his right
