Chapter 4

Author: Mint Rose
The Shaws didn't have the blatant favoritism and suffocatingly transactional attitude toward relationships that I'd felt from the Garners. That was the most important thing to me.

I had already escaped the Garner family. Rather than continue drifting through the rest of my pre-adulthood in an orphanage, I might as well find myself a stable home.

After a moment of silence, I nodded and agreed to be adopted.

When the Shaws brought me home, the car stopped outside a heavily guarded villa. Seeing how stunned I looked, they smiled and drew me into their arms.

"Our family is pretty well-off, Nessa. If there's anything you want in the future, just tell us."

Only later did I learn that being "pretty well-off" was a massive understatement. The Shaws were the wealthiest family in Beldingham, although they were living elsewhere at the time.

And so, I spent the next ten years living peacefully with my new family.

Mom and Dad treated me well and loved me as their own. Our home was filled with warmth and bliss.

As I grew up and spent many years in school, I became more outgoing. Their kindness and love led me out of the murky shadows of my past life.

I threw myself into my studies, working hard until I was finally accepted into one of Beldingham's top universities. The day my admission letter arrived, Mom and Dad sat with me in the living room and brought up something important.

"Nessa, you'll be attending college in Beldingham soon, and most of our business operations have always been based there, too. Once the school year starts, we'll move back to Beldingham and settle down there."

When I heard that, my heart gave a sudden lurch, and I felt a sinking feeling.

The Garners were from Beldingham, too. It was the city where all my nightmares had begun.

My fingers curled slightly, and a strong sense of unease rose within me. Nevertheless, I tried to reassure myself.

Beldingham was a huge metropolis, filled with countless wealthy and influential families. There was no guarantee we'd ever cross paths with the Garners. As long as I kept my identity hidden and avoided contact with them, I wouldn't have to see them again.

Suppressing my apprehension, I nodded in agreement.

Alas, never would it have occurred to me that fate had already ensured our paths would intertwine.

After moving to Beldingham, I found out that the Shaws and the Garners were neighbors. To make matters worse, the two families were acquainted enough to visit each other during the holidays. Their social circles overlapped so extensively that it was practically impossible to avoid them.

It wasn't long before Cassidy appeared in my life as well.

After spending some time around her, I realized she wasn't actually a bad person. She was simply spoiled rotten from having grown up with a family who doted on her like nobody's business.

She liked having everyone's attention on her, loved cajoling others into doing what she wanted, and was prone to throwing little tantrums.

I didn't see Frank Garner and Maureen Hill, my biological parents, very often. Whenever we happened to cross paths, their gazes would linger on my face, and they would momentarily lose themselves in thought. Their eyes clouded over with a strange, inexplicable emotion.

I knew it was the pull of the blood that we shared. They saw traces of their biological daughter in me.

But what caught my attention the most was Shane. When I saw him again, he had shed the awkwardness of adolescence and grown into a tall young man with an imposing demeanor.

The way he looked at me was particularly strange. Sometimes, he would instinctively put his guard up around me, his frosty gaze brimming with hostility, as though I were some kind of terrifying beast.

Yet at other times, he would inexplicably treat me well, quietly stepping in to help me out of difficult situations.

I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but I didn't care enough to figure him out.

In my previous life, he had sent me to a psychiatric hospital without the slightest hesitation. In this life, I would never trust a single word out of his mouth.

Life continued in this quiet manner, and soon, it was the height of summer.

One day, Mom and Dad spontaneously decided to ditch me and enjoy some time alone together. I was all alone in the enormous villa.

It was late at night, and darkness hung thick in the air. I had just finished showering and was about to turn in when my bedroom door was suddenly flung open.

Shane stood in the doorway, emanating a murderous air. His face was frighteningly dark, and fury churned in his eyes. Everything about him screamed danger.

On the day of the planetarium's opening, a huge crowd showed up. Mom and Dad stood beside me as I cut the ribbon. When a reporter interviewed me, I smiled and said that my greatest dream was to inspire more children to fall in love with the starry sky and the universe. One day, while I was teaching a group of children about Saturn, several people walked through the entrance.I glanced up and saw Shane, with Cassidy beside him. A little boy, about three or four years old, held Cassidy's hand. He looked like her son.Shane saw me, too. He froze for a moment, his footsteps coming to a halt.Cassidy noticed me as well. An awkward expression crossed her face, and her grip on the child's hand tightened slightly.I ignored them and kept teaching the children, acting as though I hadn't seen them. After the lesson, the children scattered excitedly to play with the planetary models. I turned to get some water, and as I approached the entrance, I ran into Shane. His lips parted as he look

After hearing what Shane had to say, I felt absolutely nothing. I'd already suffered through all that torment in my previous life and died because of it. What was the point of saying all this now?I eyed him coldly and said, "Are you done? If you are, I'm leaving. Don't come looking for me again, and don't bring up anything from my previous life. I don't want to hear it, and I don't need your family's compensation. The best way you can make it up to me is to stay away from me."After a pause, I added, "And one more thing—I hope you guys enjoy your life in Southshire. It's best if you never show your faces in Beldingham again. Even the sight of you guys makes me sick."Without sparing Shane another glance, I walked off. On my way toward the cafeteria, I ran into a classmate, who studied me with a concerned frown."Nerissa, who was that guy just now? Was he harassing you? Do you want me to call security?"I shook my head and smiled. "No need. He's nobody important. He won't be comin

I shook Shane's hand off and pulled out my phone, as if I were about to call campus security."I have nothing to say to you. If you don't leave now, I'll call security.""I know you hate me. I'm not asking you to forgive me." Shane looked at me, his voice low. "I just came to tell you that our family is preparing to move to Southshire. We won't be coming back to Beldingham."Mom and Dad have also agreed that they'll never come looking for you again. You won't have to worry about that anymore."I was a little taken aback. I didn't expect them to actually move out of the city. But that suited me just fine. Once they were gone, I'd never have to see them again. I could finally live in peace.I nodded, my tone flat as I said, "Got it. Anything else? If not, I'm leaving.""Wait. There's one more thing."Shane took a debit card from his pocket and held it out to me. "There's 80 million in this account. Mom and Dad are giving it to you as compensation. They know you won't see them, so

Cassidy continued, "After I died, my soul remained in the world. I watched Mom and Dad throw out all your belongings. I watched them put my portrait up in the living room and accuse you of being a jinx. I saw Shane shipping you off to a psychiatric facility."I witnessed the way they strapped you to the bed, forced those drugs down your throat, and subjected you to electric shocks. You kept sobbing in pain, and I cried with you. I wanted to tell them it wasn't your fault, that I was the one who had chosen to run away, but they couldn't hear me."And when you jumped off the building, I was standing right beside you. I tried to grab you, but I couldn't hold onto you. I watched you hit the ground, your white dress turning red with blood. "At that moment, all I could think was that if I ever got another chance, I would never throw another tantrum. I would never let you suffer so much again."Cassidy was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Her fingertips, clenched around the hem o

I sat on the couch, clutching my phone, my palms slick with sweat and my heart in turmoil. I refreshed the local news over and over, terrified of coming across any bad news. When I came across a report that read "Car Accident on Outskirts of City Leaves Young Woman in White Dress Dead at the Scene", I was so startled that I nearly dropped my phone.I hesitated for a long time before finally checking the victim's photo. Once I confirmed it wasn't her, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. By then, cold sweat had already soaked the back of my blouse. The search went on for three days with no news of Cassidy.Maureen called Mom several times, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. She said that if anything happened to Cassidy, she wouldn't want to live anymore, either.I grew increasingly anxious, too. I could barely eat, and I lost three pounds in just three days.Mom was worried sick about me. She prepared all kinds of delicious food for me every day and tried to reassur

Since the Garners stopped bothering me, I thought the matter was finally behind us.Then came the day before my first semester of college.I was packing my luggage when I got a message from Maureen."Nessa, could you please think it over one more time? Your dad and I really miss you. If you don't want to come back to us, how about we visit you at school from time to time? You don't have to acknowledge us as your parents. Just let us see you, okay?"I didn't even bother reading it all the way through. I blocked the number immediately, then added Frank's number to my blacklist as well.I got my peace back again. The next day, James drove me to my campus. I registered, picked up my student card, and unpacked in the dormitory. After a full day of running around, I was so exhausted I just wanted to collapse onto my bed and sleep.Suddenly, my phone buzzed. A message from an unfamiliar number had arrived. Thinking it might be from my academic adviser, I opened it, only to find that
