Chapter 3

Author: Mint Rose
Following yet another long sigh, the officer opened a packet of cookies for me. He even got me a cup of milk.

After gently comforting me, he drove me to the police station near my adoptive parents' place, so that they could follow the proper procedures to place me in an orphanage.

As the car traveled down the road, we passed the old house where I had once lived with my adoptive parents. I looked through the car window and spotted a teenage boy outside the house. He stood at the side of the road, his gaze sweeping his surroundings as though searching for someone.

It was Shane.

This meant that, by this point in time, the Garners had already tracked me down and sent him to look for me.

Gripped with panic, I shrank away and curled up in a corner of the car seat, trying to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. My heart pounded wildly.

Thankfully, the car just swept right past the house and continued down the road.

Not long afterward, I was taken to an orphanage. Most of the children there were only three or four years old.

At eight years old, I was already past the ideal age for adoption. The couples who came to the orphanage to meet the children preferred younger ones who had fewer memories and were easier to bond with. No one showed any interest in me, and I was perfectly happy to keep to myself.

I was quiet and well-behaved. I often helped Ms. White, the orphanage director, organize the picture books and feed the younger children. I also helped the other staff check on everyone at night. I never fought over toys or snacks. I was so thoughtful and sensible it almost broke Ms. White's heart.

About two weeks later, a couple arrived at the orphanage. They introduced themselves as Hugo Shaw and Yvonne Adams.

Mr. Shaw wore a neatly ironed outfit and gold-rimmed glasses that made him look like a refined gentleman. Mrs. Shaw had shoulder-length hair and two dimples that appeared whenever she smiled.

Each time they visited, they brought a trunk full of snacks and picture books. They spent the entire afternoon playing with the children and never seemed to favor anyone in particular. They were always more than happy to hug any child who ran into their arms.

Ms. White secretly told us that Mr. and Mrs. Shaw had been married for many years but had no children of their own, so they wanted to adopt one. They were making these frequent visits to observe everyone.

As a result, every time they showed up, the children at the orphanage crowded around them, eager to win their favor. Meanwhile, I stayed off to the side, tidying things up and never approaching them.

I knew I was too old, and that no one would want to adopt me. I had long since prepared myself to stay at the orphanage until I came of age.

But that changed one fateful afternoon.

Mrs. Shaw arrived carrying a bag of cookies she'd made by herself. Just as she entered the compound, the paper bag broke, scattering the cookies all over the ground.

Benny, who'd been running around, didn't see the cookies. He happened to slip and almost fell right into the small pile of them.

I was watering the flowers nearby, so I rushed over to catch Benny before he fell. Then I crouched down and gathered the cookies that still looked clean. I wiped them clean and distributed them to the kids nearby.

Only then did I take one of the cookies that had been crushed beyond recognition and stand off to the side to eat it myself. Once I was done, I swept up the crumbs from the ground and threw them away.

I didn't think much of this incident. But later that evening, Ms. White called me into her office.

She smiled and gently patted my head. "Nessa, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw want to adopt you. Would you like that?"

I froze in shock, unable to wrap my head around the situation.

Ms. White's smile grew even gentler as she continued, "They told me they've been observing you for quite a while now. Every time they visit, they see how you help us care for the younger children.

"Remember when Dora went missing? You spent two hours searching under the blazing sun before you found her. You even suffered heatstroke because of it, but you never said a word about it. They said you were mature for your age and had a kind heart. They really like you."

My nose began to sting.

I quietly asked why they'd chosen me over all the other kids. I was considered old for an orphan, and it wouldn't be easy for them to bond with me.

"They said they feel a special connection to you," Ms. White explained with a warm smile. "They're convinced you're the one for them."

After quietly observing them over the past few days, I could also tell that Mr. and Mrs. Shaw were genuinely good people. They treated others with kindness and warmth, and they were comfortably well-off.

On the day of the planetarium's opening, a huge crowd showed up. Mom and Dad stood beside me as I cut the ribbon. When a reporter interviewed me, I smiled and said that my greatest dream was to inspire more children to fall in love with the starry sky and the universe. One day, while I was teaching a group of children about Saturn, several people walked through the entrance.I glanced up and saw Shane, with Cassidy beside him. A little boy, about three or four years old, held Cassidy's hand. He looked like her son.Shane saw me, too. He froze for a moment, his footsteps coming to a halt.Cassidy noticed me as well. An awkward expression crossed her face, and her grip on the child's hand tightened slightly.I ignored them and kept teaching the children, acting as though I hadn't seen them. After the lesson, the children scattered excitedly to play with the planetary models. I turned to get some water, and as I approached the entrance, I ran into Shane. His lips parted as he look

After hearing what Shane had to say, I felt absolutely nothing. I'd already suffered through all that torment in my previous life and died because of it. What was the point of saying all this now?I eyed him coldly and said, "Are you done? If you are, I'm leaving. Don't come looking for me again, and don't bring up anything from my previous life. I don't want to hear it, and I don't need your family's compensation. The best way you can make it up to me is to stay away from me."After a pause, I added, "And one more thing—I hope you guys enjoy your life in Southshire. It's best if you never show your faces in Beldingham again. Even the sight of you guys makes me sick."Without sparing Shane another glance, I walked off. On my way toward the cafeteria, I ran into a classmate, who studied me with a concerned frown."Nerissa, who was that guy just now? Was he harassing you? Do you want me to call security?"I shook my head and smiled. "No need. He's nobody important. He won't be comin

I shook Shane's hand off and pulled out my phone, as if I were about to call campus security."I have nothing to say to you. If you don't leave now, I'll call security.""I know you hate me. I'm not asking you to forgive me." Shane looked at me, his voice low. "I just came to tell you that our family is preparing to move to Southshire. We won't be coming back to Beldingham."Mom and Dad have also agreed that they'll never come looking for you again. You won't have to worry about that anymore."I was a little taken aback. I didn't expect them to actually move out of the city. But that suited me just fine. Once they were gone, I'd never have to see them again. I could finally live in peace.I nodded, my tone flat as I said, "Got it. Anything else? If not, I'm leaving.""Wait. There's one more thing."Shane took a debit card from his pocket and held it out to me. "There's 80 million in this account. Mom and Dad are giving it to you as compensation. They know you won't see them, so

Cassidy continued, "After I died, my soul remained in the world. I watched Mom and Dad throw out all your belongings. I watched them put my portrait up in the living room and accuse you of being a jinx. I saw Shane shipping you off to a psychiatric facility."I witnessed the way they strapped you to the bed, forced those drugs down your throat, and subjected you to electric shocks. You kept sobbing in pain, and I cried with you. I wanted to tell them it wasn't your fault, that I was the one who had chosen to run away, but they couldn't hear me."And when you jumped off the building, I was standing right beside you. I tried to grab you, but I couldn't hold onto you. I watched you hit the ground, your white dress turning red with blood. "At that moment, all I could think was that if I ever got another chance, I would never throw another tantrum. I would never let you suffer so much again."Cassidy was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Her fingertips, clenched around the hem o

I sat on the couch, clutching my phone, my palms slick with sweat and my heart in turmoil. I refreshed the local news over and over, terrified of coming across any bad news. When I came across a report that read "Car Accident on Outskirts of City Leaves Young Woman in White Dress Dead at the Scene", I was so startled that I nearly dropped my phone.I hesitated for a long time before finally checking the victim's photo. Once I confirmed it wasn't her, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. By then, cold sweat had already soaked the back of my blouse. The search went on for three days with no news of Cassidy.Maureen called Mom several times, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. She said that if anything happened to Cassidy, she wouldn't want to live anymore, either.I grew increasingly anxious, too. I could barely eat, and I lost three pounds in just three days.Mom was worried sick about me. She prepared all kinds of delicious food for me every day and tried to reassur

Since the Garners stopped bothering me, I thought the matter was finally behind us.Then came the day before my first semester of college.I was packing my luggage when I got a message from Maureen."Nessa, could you please think it over one more time? Your dad and I really miss you. If you don't want to come back to us, how about we visit you at school from time to time? You don't have to acknowledge us as your parents. Just let us see you, okay?"I didn't even bother reading it all the way through. I blocked the number immediately, then added Frank's number to my blacklist as well.I got my peace back again. The next day, James drove me to my campus. I registered, picked up my student card, and unpacked in the dormitory. After a full day of running around, I was so exhausted I just wanted to collapse onto my bed and sleep.Suddenly, my phone buzzed. A message from an unfamiliar number had arrived. Thinking it might be from my academic adviser, I opened it, only to find that
