Chapter 2

Author: Beloved Farewell
Yet Claire was willing to give Justin a wristwatch worth thirty million, while refusing to give me even thirty dollars for a taxi.

Because of that, I missed my mother's last moments and would carry that regret for the rest of my life.

I clenched my fists, forcing down the bitterness in my chest.

"I don't need your charity. All I want is for you and Justin to get out of my house."

Claire stared at me in disbelief, her face twisting with anger.

"What did you say? You dare tell me to get out? All this over thirty dollars?

"I knew it—I was right about you. You're nothing but a gold-digger! The moment you realized you couldn't squeeze money out of me, your attitude changed. Is money all you see?"

Justin shot me a mocking glance and spoke up at just the right moment.

"Simon, how can you treat Clairebear like this? She's the young lady of the Musk family, lowering herself to be with someone like you. You should be grateful and think twice about making her angry. Don't you just want money? Fine. I'll give it to you."

With that, he casually took out a bank card and tossed it in front of me.

The instant I saw the number on the card, my whole body began to tremble.

That card… had once been mine.

I had given it to Claire. Every year, I deposited a fixed sum of one hundred thousand into it—it was supposed to be the money for our wedding.

We had agreed that when the balance reached one million, we would get married.

But now, this card—once filled with all my hopes and dreams—was in another man's hands.

Worse still, he was returning it to me as if tossing scraps to a beggar.

At last, I could no longer hold back my tears.

Justin looked at me, his eyes full of ridicule.

"Clairebear, looks like your boyfriend really is desperate for money. It's just a card, and he's already this emotional."

Claire's expression darkened. Clearly, she no longer remembered what that card meant to me.

"Stop talking. Just thinking about how I spent so many years with someone as money-grubbing as him makes me want to throw up."

Justin smiled in satisfaction, then continued, "Clairebear, since Simon made you so angry, shouldn't you teach him a lesson? Isn't money what he cares about most? Ask him to transfer this apartment to you. When he earns enough to buy it back, you can return it to him."

This apartment was bought for me by my mother after I graduated from college, using the savings she had scraped together over half her life.

It was my only shelter—and the only thing she had left me.

Yet, Claire hesitated for no more than a second before agreeing to Justin's proposal.

"Simon, Justin is right. A person as greedy as you deserves to be punished with the thing you care about most. Write a transfer agreement right now and sign this apartment over to me. Otherwise, don't even think about me forgiving you."

Looking at her as if this were only natural, my heart twisted in pain.

"Claire, we've been together for so many years. What have I ever done to deserve this? Why must you treat me this way?"

Perhaps my voice sounded too desperate, because for a brief moment, Claire seemed at a loss.

She was about to say something when Justin cut in with a cold laugh.

"Simon, I didn't expect you to be so good at playing the victim. You look honest enough, but when it matters, you resort to cheap tricks. Clairebear isn't stupid. Do you really think putting on a little show will make her soften her heart?"

Provoked by Justin's words, Claire's face gradually turned cold.

"Simon, are these material things really that important to you?

"I'll give you one last chance. Transfer the apartment to me, and I'll believe your feelings are genuine. Otherwise, it only proves you're full of schemes and that you've been with me all along for ulterior motives."

Listening to the threat hidden in her words, I felt nothing but disappointment and a bitter sense of irony.

She and Justin played their parts in perfect harmony, completely indifferent to how I felt.

"I know everything that happened before was my fault. I'm sorry. I'll apologize to you, and I'll make Justin apologize too. Please don't leave me, okay?"As soon as Claire finished speaking, she called Justin over from where he had been standing by the door and coldly ordered him to kneel.Justin looked at Claire pleadingly, but all he received in return was her icy stare. In the end, he had no choice but to bend his knees and kneel in front of me.I watched the scene with cold indifference and found it painfully ironic.Once upon a time, Claire had forced me to apologize to Justin in the same way. She hadn't made me kneel, but she had crushed my pride all the same, leaving me in agony. Now that the situation had reversed, I felt no urge to laugh.Perhaps in Claire's eyes, none of us ever had any dignity—we were nothing more than toys she could manipulate at will.It wasn't that she didn't love me. But that love was born of guilt and of her fear of losing me.And someday, ther

"Shut up! Justin, you still have the nerve to ask me to help you? Look at what you've done!"You knew perfectly well that the money in that card was money Simon saved up to marry me, yet you deliberately tricked it out of my hands and even squandered it without my permission!"Who gave you the guts? Who allowed you to do that?"Justin had never seen Claire look so cold and ruthless. He was so frightened that he barely dared to speak, stammering,"Clairebear, it's not like that. Listen to my explanation…"He thought he could, as before, come up with some excuse and make Claire soften. But this time, no matter how he begged, it was useless.Claire looked at him icily."I won't help you repay that money. I've already hurt Simon too many times. This time, I absolutely cannot wrong him again. And you've framed Simon again and again in the past, deliberately driving a wedge between us. I won't just let that go."From today on, I don't care what method you use—go and apologize to Sim

I laughed in anger. No wonder Justin had acted so generous when he returned the card to me.He thought I was still the same Simon who loved Claire so deeply—someone who, even knowing about the dirty tricks he pulled behind my back, would let it go for her sake. But this time, I didn't just want him to pay the price. I wanted Claire—the woman who had betrayed me—to pay it too.So I immediately contacted a junior from my university days, someone I had always been on good terms with. She was now a well-known lawyer in the capital, with a law firm of her own.I told her everything—my history with Claire and Justin, every grievance and betrayal. After listening in silence for a long time, she finally said in a firm, confident voice, "Don't worry, Simon. I'll help you get back everything that belongs to you."She then acted as my attorney and formally sued Claire and Justin. The legal process went even more smoothly than I had expected. The court ruled that Claire must return all the

But such a small request had made Claire's face turn cold at once."Simon, did you do this on purpose? You know perfectly well I don't want to remember those painful things from the past, yet you still ask me to cook for you! What are you really trying to do?"Only then did I realize that what I saw as a warm gesture—a simple birthday cake—was, in her eyes, a form of humiliation. From that day on, I never dared mention cooking again.Later, when Justin was hospitalized with a back injury, Claire canceled all her work just to take care of him.She even willingly stepped into the kitchen she hated most, spending more than three hours every day preparing nutritious meals for him.I was both heartbroken and jealous. I had a huge fight with Claire over it.In the end, all I got was her cold stare and one sentence: I hate petty men the most. What was even more ridiculous was that back then, because I loved her so deeply, even knowing she cared more about another man than about me, I

At those words, Claire seemed to be struck by something, freezing in place."What did you say? Simon's mother passed away? No… that can't be true. She was so healthy. How could she—"Before she could finish, it was as if something suddenly occurred to her. She turned to look at me, her voice rough and strained."Simon, when you told me earlier that your mother had been in a car accident… you weren't lying to me? I'm sorry, I… I thought…"Seeing the regret and panic on her face, I gave a cold laugh."You thought? Thought what? That I made up something like this just to scam you out of thirty dollars? Claire, how low do you think I am? So low that I would curse my own mother's life for thirty dollars?"By the end, I could no longer control my emotions. My words burst out like a roar.Claire stared at me in a daze. She stepped forward cautiously, about to say something, when Justin suddenly stopped her."Clairebear, don't fall for it. This is just Simon's trick to play the victim!

"Want to get back together? Don't even think about it! Even if you knelt down and begged me, I would never take you back!" Claire spat.Sometimes, I truly marveled at Claire—at her boundless confidence and her shamelessness. Not bothering to argue with her any further, I slapped my resignation letter down in front of her."Please sign it, Ms. Musk. Trash like me shouldn't stay in your esteemed company and offend your eyes."…Claire's face changed instantly, her voice turning sharp."You're resigning? Who gave you permission to resign? Simon, I'm warning you—if you keep putting on airs like this, there really will be no chance left between us!"Justin glanced at me with barely concealed glee and spoke in a hypocritical tone."Clairebear, can't you tell? Simon is just throwing a tantrum. Someone who would lie about his own mother dying just for thirty dollars—how could he possibly bear to leave a company with benefits this good? I think he's just playing mind games, forcing you
