Amelia’s POV
When a rogue tore into my shoulder, I reached out to my mate, Alpha Ronan, through our mind link for help, only to discover he had blocked me.
Just twenty minutes earlier, I hadn't seen the bloodshed coming. I was enjoying a quiet morning when Beta Harvey’s frantic voice shattered the peace.
“Luna Amelia. Rogues. In the east forest. They’re approaching the border.” He rushed to report, his voice was tense.
“I’ll mind link Ronan,” I had told him.
“Alpha’s….occupied.” Harvey looked uncomfortable.
Occupied? Our border was being attacked. What could be more important than that?
“With what?” I asked.
Harvey hesitated.
“With Sarah,” he eventually said.
“Oh.”
Sarah.
My heart dropped. Of course Ronan was with Sarah. Ronan was always with Sarah these days.
Ronan was my fated mate and the Alpha of the Moonvale Pack. Sarah was the Chief Warrior’s daughter, and Ronan’s childhood friend. I always thought their relationship was innocent.
Until recently.
As his Luna, Ronan used to treat me well. He was sweet and kind. He doted on me. Lately though, Ronan had become distant. We barely spoke. He was never home. He was always with Sarah.
He even blew off our third anniversary to be with her.
When I confronted him about it, he told me Sarah had been sick. It was a lame excuse. I didn’t believe her. She wasn’t sick. She was just making up lies so that Ronan would spend time with her.
“You shouldn’t trust her,” I told Ronan that night. The dinner I’d made for our anniversary was cold. Midnight had passed. I’d sat alone all night, waiting for him. “Sarah’s a liar. She’s trying to manipulate you!”
Ronan wouldn’t believe me though. He accused me of being jealous and petty. We had a big fight.
“You’ve been unreasonable and selfish lately, Amelia. Don’t contact me about these petty issues anymore. I’m serious. No more unnecessary mind links!”
So when Beta Harvey told me our pack was being attacked, and that Ronan was with Sarah again, I decided not to contact him.
Instead, I ran to the border with Harvey. We led the warriors to fight off the rogues.
The rogues were far stronger and more numerous than we expected. They emerged from the trees with a menacing glint in their eyes.
“Be careful,” Beta Harvey warned right before he shifted.
We fought hard and managed to push them back, away from our border. Some of them retreated.
As I lunged at one of the rogues though, another one caught me from behind. It’s strong jaw clamped down on my shoulder. Its teeth tore through my flesh. Red hot pain. Agonizing and raw.
I screamed out and fell to my knees. Desperately, I reached out to Ronan. To my utter shock though, the mindlink was silent.
‘He blocked you,’ my wolf growled. ‘He blocked our mindlink!’
The rogue gnashed its teeth at me. My own blood dripped from its fur. One more bite and I was done for.
Thankfully, Harvey lunged. He threw the rogue off. It landed with a thud against a tree. Then it gave a yelp and ran off.
“Luna Amelia,” Harvey said. He rushed towards me.
The trees swam in my vision. The pain was too much to bear.
“Hang in there. You’re gonna be okay.” Harvey’s panicked face was the last thing I saw before everything went dark.
When I came to, I was disoriented. Bright lights blinded me. Turning my head to the side, I realized I was in the pack hospital. I tried to sit up, but agonizing pain ripped through my shoulder.
Right. The rogues. The bite. It all came back to me.
My shoulder was bandaged but it still hurt.
“Ronan,” I whispered.
He was here. He had to be. I was badly injured. Harvey would have told him. Even though things weren’t great between us at the moment, he was still my mate. He still cared for me. He still loved me.
Confident that he’d come rushing to my side, I called his name again.
The seconds ticked by. No Ronan. My confidence wavered.
‘He’s not here,’ my wolf said, her voice tinged with sadness.
Struggling to sit up, I glanced around the room. My eyes landed on Harvey, sitting in the corner of the room on a small stool.
“Luna Amelia.” He smiled at me. He was still in his warrior gear. His face was smudged with blood and dirt. “Don’t try to sit up. Just lie down and rest.”
“Where’s Ronan?” I asked. My heart hammered in my chest. He wasn’t there. He hadn’t come…
“He’s talking to the doctor.” Harvey’s voice was gentle. Reassuring. I let out a sigh of relief.
Of course Ronan was there. Even though he was spending most of his time with Sarah, he still cared about me.
“You took a really bad bite,” Harvey said. He came to my bedside and patted my hand. “I was worried for a moment there. I thought…” His voice trailed off. He didn’t need to finish the sentence. I knew what he thought. He thought I died.
“Nope,” I smiled weakly at him. “It will take more than a rogue to bring me down.”
Harvey squeezed my hand. “Rest,” he said. “You need to regain your strength.” Then he flashed me a comforting smile and left.
I waited for Ronan to come but he didn’t. So, desperate to see him, I carefully got out of my bed. My knees wobbled a bit but I made it to the door. In the corridor, I steadied myself on the wall and made my way towards the doctor’s office.
The office door opened a crack. I was about to go inside, when I heard the doctor say something that made me pause.
“She’s a bit anemic,” the doctor said. “So she needs lots of rest.”
“Is the baby okay?”
I stopped dead in my tracks. That was Ronan’s voice.
But what did he mean by ‘the baby’? What baby? What was he talking about?
“Yes, of course.” The doctor’s voice was gentle. Reassuring. “Wolf pups are very resilient. But she needs your full attention.”
My mind spun. What wolf pup? Who was pregnant? This didn’t make any sense.
That’s when I heard it. Sarah’s unmistakable laugh.
“You heard what he said. You need to spend more time with me. Doctor’s orders.”
A sense of foreboding washed over me. Something wasn’t right. I stood frozen in place, my palms sweaty.
The scrape of chairs against the floor came next. Then footsteps towards the door. Seconds later, Ronan and Sarah emerged.
The color drained from my face. Ronan stood with one arm wrapped around Sarah’s shoulders, his hand resting protectively over her swollen belly. The pieces snapped into place.
My heart shattered. My chest squeezed. The room spun as my throat went completely dry. My words came out as a croak:
“Sarah… is carrying your baby?”
Amelia’s POV“Elian,” I said, watching as Damian fluffed the pillows, keeping me propped up in bed. “For the boy. I told Nadia weeks ago, and I haven’t changed my mind since.”“Elian’s good,” Damian said, turning the name over in his mouth. “And the girl?”“Nyla,” I replied. He repeated the name softly to himself. “Nyla. Elian and Nyla.” He nodded slowly. “I like them both.”“Good, because I settled on them in a garden at Silverclaw weeks ago, and I’ve been waiting for you to catch up.”I couldn’t reach Julian or Nadia through the link with my wolf removed, so I wrote them two long letters instead, and Hattie promised to send them out first thing in the morning. I told them the coven had found a way to help. I didn’t include the details. Some things shouldn’t go on paper.“You should go home,” I told Damian while sealing the letters. “Ironfang can’t run by itself for two months.”“It doesn’t have to. I’ve already arranged it,” he said, looking entirely too pleased with himself. “Julia
Amelia’s POVI woke up on the ground with Damian holding me."She's awake." He held my face in his hands, openly crying. "Camilla, she's awake. Amelia, say something.""I'm here," I said hoarsely. "Stop yelling."He laughed shakily and hugged me tight.I couldn't even lift my head. This wasn't like the full moon, when the change left me shaky and worn out. This was quieter, but it hurt more. There was a hole in my mind where someone used to be."How bad is it?" Damian asked."I can't feel my wolf at all.""Camilla?""That's normal," she said. "Let me check on her."She knelt next to me and reached for the green stone on my chest."Where did she get this stone?""Landon from Lonefur sent it," Damian said. "Before we left Silverclaw. He said it calms the mind and helps unborn pups stay safe.""He was right about what it does, but wrong about when she needs it," Camilla said as she took the chain from my neck and handed the stone to him. "Right now, her wolf has been separated from Ameli
Amelia’s POVThe next night Camilla led us to a clearing in the woods. The walk was long, at least two miles. Damian carried me for the last mile because I was too tired to continue. There was barely any moonlight. The witches set candles around the clearing, lighting it up while the woods beyond stayed pitch black.'Are you sure about this?' Damian asked me through our mate bond.'I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared, but I am more afraid of facing a future where I would have to choose my life over our pups,' I replied. 'I'll be with you every step of the way. You can squeeze my hand until it breaks. I don't care,' Damian responded.Crickets chirped in the distance until the witches’ footsteps in the grass cut them off. Sometimes a breeze made the candles flicker and shadows move across the trees. Hattie and Dalila stood with the others in a circle.Camilla stopped Damian at the edge. “You’ll stand here,” she told him. “Don’t take a step closer, and don’t interrupt, no matter
Amelia’s POVCamilla didn’t answer right away. She picked up one of the older books and turned it so we could see the page.“The Rebirth Ritual,” Camilla said quietly.“I’ve never heard of it,” I said, frowning at the page.“You wouldn’t have. It belongs to us, and we don’t talk about it outside these woods,” Camilla said, smoothing the page. “Listen. I’ll explain it once, then you can ask questions until you understand.”“Go on,” Damian prompted.“Ten of my witches will take part of your wolf spirit and seal her away.” Camilla traced the page with her finger. The writing was cramped and old, the ink faded where hands had touched it for years. “You’ll carry the twins like you are now. When it’s time, you’ll give birth.”“And then she dies,” Damian said flatly, his voice barely above a whisper.“Yes. That part does not change. It will be exactly as Nadia told you and exactly what Amelia saw in her dream.”“Then what’s the point of the ritual?” I asked. My hands shook, but I tried to ke
Amelia’s POVI slept until it was dark outside.Damian woke me softly, speaking in a low voice. “We should go,” he said, gently moving a strand of hair from my face. I rubbed my eyes and followed him down a dim hallway to a room at the back of the house.A big table sat in the middle. Camilla, Dalila, and Hattie were sitting together, looking serious. Old books were piled up everywhere, some so worn out I thought they might fall apart if I touched them.Dalila looked up as we came in. “Finally awake?” she joked, but I could tell she was worried about me.“Let her have a minute,” Hattie said, sounding firm but kind. She slid a cup toward me. “Chamomile tea. You're going to need this for your nerves.""That sounds ominous," I yawned.Camilla didn’t look up from her book. “Sit down,” she said. “We need to talk, and we don’t have much time.”Damian pulled out a chair for me, and I sat next to him. "They're hoping the books will tell us something new," he murmured."Nadia told me a great d
Amelia’s POV"Good to see you too," I said, walking over and hugging Camilla."You traveled all night," Camilla said, eyeing us. "You haven’t eaten or slept. I know why you’re here, but it can wait until after breakfast.""We came because there’s no time," Damian said."There’s always time for breakfast,” Camilla said as she turned and headed up the path. "Come on."Damian frowned, about to protest, but I squeezed his hand. He looked at me.“Just relax, Damian," I said quietly. "Camilla invited us because she had a way to help us. You know she isn’t the type to mince words. Having breakfast won’t hurt.""I don’t want to sit and eat,” Damian argued.“Do you want to insult her? If you insult her, then she may not help us,” I countered.“She would forgive you and we have an alliance. It would be in her best interest to help us,” Damian said.“Don’t be like that, Damian. You can force your way with her or the coven,” I said. I knew Damian was trying to look firm, but he was trying not to
