“None of us thought you would.”

Mason's words echoed in Eli's head long after the line went dead.

Eli stared at his phone, waiting for his friend to offer an explanation, a joke anything to prove Mason hadn't just admitted to keeping secrets.

“Mason?” Eli asked into the silence. “Mason!”

Nothing. He lowered the phone slowly.

Across the room, Adrian stood motionless, pale beneath the dim apartment lights. For once, the star hockey captain seemed stripped of every clever defense.

Eli met his gaze

The Cross estate stood on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind tall iron gates and a long driveway lined with old trees. Eli had seen photographs of the property before, but he had never imagined visiting it under these circumstances. The house was enormous, built from dark stone with tall windows that reflected the cloudy evening sky. Ivy crawled up one side of the building, and the gardens had grown wild around the edges. It looked less like a home than a place where secrets could survive for generations. Adrian parked several streets away. "We can't use the main entrance," he said, switching off the engine. "Richard has security cameras at the gates and around the front of the house." "How do you know they still work?" "Because I helped install them when I was sixteen." Eli glanced at him. "You were installing security cameras as a teenager?" "I was trying to convince Richard to let me have a motorcycle. He said I needed to learn responsibility first." "And

Eli looked back down at the phone. Two babies. Two names. One transferred under a false identity, the other supposedly dead. And standing at the center of it all, pulling every string, was Richard Daniels. "We need to find him," Eli said. Adrian nodded firmly. "I'll call him." "No. He'll know we're onto him. We need to catch him off guard." "Then where do we start?" Eli remembered the scribbled warning on the back of the old photograph: If anything happens to us, the children must never learn what we did. There had to be something else. A vault of secrets, somewhere the adults had buried their past something Daniel Parker or Daniel Cross had uncovered before vanishing. "Your brother's room," Eli said. "You said he kept records of everything he was investigating. Did you search all of it?" "Every drawer, every cabinet." "Then you searched what he wanted you to find." A realization dawned in Adrian's eyes. "There was a locked cabinet in the basement of our old house.

  • The Hockey Captain Secret Crush   Chapter 15: The Mother Who Watched Him Grow

Eli watched the video again. Then a third time. Each replay made the impossible feel more real. The woman in the hospital gown was unmistakably Helen Cross Adrian's mother, the woman everyone at Blackthorn believed had died twenty-one years ago. She was alive in the footage. Standing in a sterile hospital corridor, she watched a bassinet being wheeled toward an exit, her silent expression a desperate plea for someone to find her son. "How can she be alive?" Eli whispered. Adrian didn't answer. He sat on the edge of the sofa, staring at the frozen image on Eli's phone. His hands were clenched so tightly his knuckles had turned stark white. "My mother died when I was a child," he finally said, his voice flat. "I remember her funeral. I remember the coffin. I remember Richard standing beside Daniel and me, telling us she was gone." "Did you see her body?" Adrian's head snapped up. "What?" "At the funeral. Did you see her body?" "No. Richard said the casket had to remain clos

On the other end of the line, Miriam broke into quiet, uncontrollable sobs. The sound stunned Eli into silence. In his entire life, he had only heard his mother cry twice: once at his father’s funeral, when he was too small to understand the heavy black clothes, and once years later when he found an old, locked photograph tucked inside her vanity drawer. Hearing her now made his blood run cold. "I didn't know they took you," she wept softly. Eli’s heart hammered against his ribs. "Taken me from where?" "The delivery room." "Who took me?" "I don't know!" "Mom!" "I swear on my life, Eli, I don't know!" her voice cracked with desperate agony. "They told me my baby was stillborn. They showed me a death certificate. They showed me a white blanket... and I believed them because I was hemorrhaging and barely conscious! When I woke up, the doctors said there were severe complications and that you didn't survive!" Eli felt the world go numb around him. "Then how am I here

Eli read the hospital record again, hoping the text would rewrite itself if he stared hard enough. It didn’t. ELI PARKER — TRANSFERRED. DANIEL CROSS — DECEASED AT BIRTH. The room tilted on its axis. His fingertips trembled against the glass screen of his phone, and he dropped into the nearest chair before his knees buckled. Across the table, Adrian stood motionless. The color had drained from his face, leaving his sharp features hollow and unnervingly blank. "Tell me this is fake," Eli whispered. Adrian didn't answer. "Adrian tell me someone fabricated this!" "I don't know." The stark honesty hurt worse than a lie would have. Eli set the phone down with a sharp clatter. "Your mother gave birth to two children. One was declared dead, and the other was transferred under my name. Meanwhile, you have a brother named Daniel who vanished three weeks ago. How does any of this make sense?" "It doesn't." "Then explain!” "I can't explain something I don't understand myself!" Adri

Eli stared down at the screen, the dial tone buzzing in his ear. He wanted to call her back, but another knock rattled the door frame, more urgent this time. "Eli, please. I know you're inside." He approached the door cautiously and peered through the wide angle peephole. Adrian stood alone in the dimly lit hallway. His hair was disheveled, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes, and he looked as though he hadn't slept in days. In his right hand, he held a folded piece of yellowed paper. Eli unlocked the heavy deadbolt but left the security chain fastened, pulling the door open a few inches. "What do you want?" Adrian looked profoundly relieved just to see his face. "I found something." "What?" "Something Daniel left behind." Eli's heart began to hammer against his ribs. "What does it have to do with me?" Adrian glanced down at the security chain, acknowledging the barrier without complaint. "Can I come inside?" "No." Adrian nodded, accepting the refusal. "All r
