Chapter 1

The moment I saw that key card, my finger froze in midair above the washing machine button.

A thousand thoughts crashed through my mind at once.

Had he booked a room? When? Who was he with? A friend? A coworker? Or...

I shook my head hard, trying to shut those thoughts down.

We'd always been happy. Seven years together. How could it be?

Water splashed in the bathroom as my husband, Derek Hayes, soaked in the tub, humming as usual.

When he came out, he kissed my forehead, his expression so calm it made me wonder if I was overthinking everything.

Seven years of marriage. Every payday, he transferred his whole check to me on time. He always told me where he was going without being asked.

What could a key card really prove? Maybe he'd been entertaining a client. Maybe he'd booked it for a friend.

He didn't even have a female assistant. Every person on his team was a man.

I actually laughed at myself.

Audrey, Audrey. You've been reading too much online drama.

But just as I picked up those pants to toss them into the washing machine, the bathroom door flew open.

Derek came running out barefoot, hair still dripping, face slick with sweat.

"Babe! Have you washed those pants yet?"

Panic sharpened his voice. He sounded like a man with a secret to protect.

I pushed the key card deep into the pocket. By the time I looked up, my face was perfectly composed.

"Not yet. I was just checking the pockets.

"Why? I always do laundry at this time."

A thin sheen of sweat broke out across Derek's face, and his words came out in a stammer.

"It's just... I, I just remembered I need these for a meeting tomorrow. Don't wash them yet."

He snatched the pants and dug frantically through the pockets.

The instant he found the key card, he visibly relaxed.

Then he turned around and pulled me into his arms, pressing his lips to my forehead.

"You work so hard, babe. You're always stuck doing all this.

"Get some rest tonight. I'll take care of the laundry later."

Wrapped in his arms, I breathed in the same body-wash scent he always wore.

Hidden inside my sleeve, my hand curled into a fist.

Something was off.

Everything about this was wrong.

In all our years of marriage, he'd never washed a single pair of socks on his own.

And today, over a pair of pants, he'd grabbed them away and sweet-talked me. He'd gone to an awful lot of trouble.

That could only mean he was hiding something from me.

I playfully punched his arm, keeping my voice light, like I was joking.

"Fine, don't wash them. You're acting like you've got someone on the side and you're scared of getting caught."

Derek flinched like I'd hit a nerve, and his voice shot up.

"How could you even say that? We've been married this long and you still don't trust me?

"You're suspicious of everything! If you're that bored, go to bed!"

He slammed the bathroom door shut, and the sound of running water started up again.

The louder he got, the guiltier he sounded.

I stood outside the door, staring at that frosted glass, and slowly let the smile fall from my face.

The next time I heard anything about Lily, it was a video call from Derek. She was tied up in a small room. Gasoline had been poured all around her.And there were Derek and Natalie, huddled together, each holding a lit torch. This deranged pair, backed into a corner with nothing left to lose, had kidnapped Lily and were ready to take her down with them.Derek leered into the camera, his face twisted and inhuman."Audrey, I didn't want it to come to this. You forced my hand!"We're treated like scum out there now. We can't live like this! But you don't get to walk away untouched!"You've got depression, right? Let's see how long you last without your daughter!"Hearing those words, I shook with rage from head to toe. They say even a wild animal won't hurt its own young. I never imagined he could go after his own child. But right now, my only priority was stalling him.So I thought fast and tried to get through to Natalie instead."Natalie! If Derek wants to die, that's his choice. But

By the time he tried to do damage control, viewers had already dug up even more.Anime fans pointed out that the bunny outfit was clearly adult lingerie and had absolutely nothing to do with cosplay. They said Natalie's claim was an insult to the entire cosplay community.Meanwhile, digital-forensics experts identified obvious editing artifacts in the chat screenshots Derek had shown. His account was permanently banned within two hours. On top of the online backlash, the two of them faced massive breach-of-contract penalties.Derek went from riding high to rock bottom overnight, reduced to clinging to his day job for survival.Their jobs and their lives both began to unravel.Derek was suspended pending an internal investigation. He could lose his job at any moment.Natalie was hit with a flood of complaints from parents.Parents refused to let someone of her character near their children, and the school fired her on the spot. Most absurd of all, the online attacks soon proved too much

As public opinion mounted, more and more people piled on, demanding I apologize to Derek and Natalie. The two of them played it perfectly. One the good cop, one the bad.Derek kept defending me, saying he didn't blame me and begging everyone to forgive my behavior.Natalie, meanwhile, rode the wave of indignation and put on a grand performance."Audrey didn't just insult me personally. She insulted my profession!"Even if I could forgive her, this industry can't! I have a duty to stand up for every kindergarten teacher!"With his devoted-husband act and her righteous-crusader act, the two of them raked in followers.During this time, Derek reached out to me repeatedly. He kept pushing me to make a public apology and voluntarily agree to a divorce. If I cooperated, he'd be generous enough to let me off the hook. He'd give me custody, but I had to give up every dollar. When it came to splitting assets, Natalie was practically gloating."Before, Derek was kind enough to offer you half. Yo

Natalie took the opportunity to dab at her tears and trotted out a coworker as a character witness. The coworker confirmed that Natalie was indeed an anime fan who regularly did cosplay. In their version, the entire thing was one big misunderstanding. But the viewers weren't that gullible.Chat histories and props could easily be faked on the spot.A coworker's testimony could just as easily be a lie.[Why should we believe you? We're not idiots!][Exactly. We believe what we saw with our own eyes, and what we saw that night didn't look fake.]In the face of all the skepticism, Derek smiled confidently. To my disbelief, he pulled out a mental-health evaluation."I already told you. My wife is mentally ill."Do you really think you can trust anything a sick person says or does?"That document turned the tide completely.Viewers began to waver. More and more of them started questioning whether everything that had happened was just a delusion brought on by my condition.Derek slipped into

When he realized I wasn't going to budge, Derek finally showed his true colors."Fine. You get custody. We split everything fifty-fifty."And you go online, post a video, and tell everyone it was all a misunderstanding. That you staged the whole thing."This is the biggest concession I'm willing to make. Consider it compensation for you and our daughter."He even had the nerve to look like he was making some noble sacrifice.I couldn't help applauding his performance."Compensation? What exactly are you compensating? Are you a clown? Because you're sure good at putting on an act."I wish I could go back five years and claw my own eyes out! I must've been blind to marry you!"I was trying to keep this quiet and settle it between us."Since you won't sign, forget the negotiations. I'll see you in court."I threw my coffee at both of them, grabbed my bag, and started for the door.Derek completely lost it. He pointed at me through clenched teeth."Audrey, I'm warning you. This is your las

After everyone cleared out, the circus was finally over.I'd expected to feel the rush of revenge, or at least the urge to tear into both of them. But all I felt was sick to my stomach. After all these years of marriage, I never could have imagined he'd stoop this low.He was having an affair with his own daughter's teacher. He didn't care about Lily at all. He'd never cared about my feelings either.Derek's lips moved like he wanted to say something more. But I flung the key card at his face, turned, and walked out.Every second I spent looking at the two of them was an insult to my own eyes.Back home, I moved fast. I packed everything Lily and I would need and sorted out all our assets. Then I printed out a divorce agreement. All I had to do now was wait for the fallout. That would be my leverage. And what arrived before any punishment from Derek's company was the court of public opinion.I'd shut off the livestream, but viewers had already screen-recorded everything.Clips were edi
