Chapter 2

Author: Amber Fleck
The warm, happy scene made it feel like Ellie and I had walked into the wrong apartment.

"Lucia—"

Pierce jumped up and hurried over to take my bag. "Daphne's landlord suddenly sold the place and kicked them out. They haven't found somewhere new yet, so I brought them here. Can they stay a while?"

I didn't answer. I just watched the housekeeper carry our stuff into the storage room piece by piece.

Daphne spoke softly, though the smug look on her face was impossible to miss. "Sorry, Lucia. My health's not great, so I need a room with good sunlight and airflow. Pierce gave me the master bedroom."

Jared had taken over Ellie's room.

Her favorite doll had been tossed aside by him, its arms and legs snapped off.

Pierce suddenly looked uneasy. "Lucia, if you're not okay with this, I can find them another—"

"I'm fine with it." I held my hand out calmly. "Same rates as before. But since they're staying in my apartment, there's a location fee. And your company gets billed separately."

A loud smack echoed through the room.

Pierce slammed my bag onto the floor, his face dark with anger. "Lucia Leighton, have you lost your mind? What kind of crap are you saying in front of the kids? Do you have any shame left?"

I almost laughed.

He was the one who brought another woman and her kid into our home, yet somehow I was the shameless one for saying it out loud.

Pierce grabbed Daphne and Jared and headed for the door.

As he passed me, he threw a bank card at my face. "Five hundred grand. Happy now? I tried being nice, and you kept pushing. Why don't you just marry your money already?"

When the apartment finally went quiet, Ellie sniffled and wiped my face with a tissue.

That was when I realized the edge of the card had sliced the corner of my eye.

"Mommy, it's my fault for being sick. You have to put up with Daddy because of me every day."

I forced back my tears and held Ellie tight. "I'm not mad. Once your surgery's over, you'll be okay. I'm happy..."

Ellie, who used to need Daddy to tell her bedtime stories every night, cried herself to sleep in my arms.

I stared at the tight crease between her brows, my chest aching like it was being crushed.

When did our happy little family turn into this?

Was it after Daphne's husband died, when Pierce got scared she'd do something reckless and started spending every night at her place to comfort her?

He went so often the paparazzi started calling him her boyfriend.

Or was it when he worried Jared would get bullied for not having a dad, so he never missed a parent-teacher conference?

Children's Day. Birthday parties. He showed up for all of it.

Meanwhile, my daughter got treated like some illegitimate kid at school and bullied nonstop.

Or maybe it was the first time Ellie collapsed from a heart attack.

I called Pierce over and over, but his line stayed busy.

By the time I got to the hospital, every doctor had been pulled away to treat Jared's tiny scrape.

Ellie's heart stopped three times.

I begged until my voice gave out and collapsed from exhaustion before I finally stopped a doctor and barely saved her.

I snapped out of it, took a deep breath, and headed for the storage room to pack.

Other than clothes and daily essentials, I left everything behind.

Then I saw the ceramic mugs the three of us had painted together at a craft shop back when Pierce used to take Ellie and me out.

A sharp pain twisted through my chest.

The Pierce who once gave Ellie and me all his love, patience, and time was gone.

After making sure I hadn't forgotten anything important, I carried the sleeping Ellie out of that unfamiliar apartment without looking back.

A week passed in our new place. Pierce never sent a single message.

Daphne, though, kept blowing up my phone.

Every message was another tabloid article about their trips together, like she was scared I might miss one.

I opened them without expression.

They'd gone everywhere Ellie and I used to dream about visiting.

Watching the Northern Lights in Iceland. Skiing in Switzerland. Seeing cherry blossoms in Japan.

Even the media company covering them was the same one that had once reported on my fairytale wedding with Pierce.

[Sorry, Lucia. I tried convincing Pierce to pay the paparazzi to delete the articles, but he said you have plenty of money. This all started because of me. Maybe I should sell the jewelry and bags Pierce bought me and use that money to remove the news?]

Daphne deliberately photographed every gift Pierce gave her, obviously trying to get a reaction out of me.

Before, I would've stormed over and smashed everything in sight.

Now, I simply replied:

[Then I'll leave it to you.]

The typing indicator hovered on the screen for what felt like an eternity, but no new message ever came.

Just when I thought things were finally calming down, a million dollars suddenly hit my account.

The second I saw the note attached to the transfer, my blood went ice-cold.

When Ellie turned seventeen, she went viral again after her paintings sold for sky-high prices. For her future, Sean and I decided to move back to Floravia and open an art gallery for her.Even if she stopped painting someday, she'd still have another path waiting for her.At the height of her popularity, Ellie started holding exhibitions all the time. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost bag, Ellie suddenly pointed at someone on the security footage."Mom, this guy's weird. He's always the first one here and the last one to leave. But he never asks for photos or autographs. What does he even want? You think he's trying to steal a painting?"The second I saw the blurry figure on the screen, my chest tightened. We hadn't seen each other in decades, but I recognized him instantly.Sean leaned over for a look too.He clearly realized who it was and started to say something, but I pressed a hand against his arm and lightly shook my head.I smiled at Ellie. "Maybe he's jus

Sean built a little treehouse in the woods beside my house.Ellie screamed and bolted inside. The second she shoved the door open, she gasped. Flowers filled every corner.Sean stepped up beside me. "Harry told me your ex once wanted to build Ellie a treehouse to win you back. Kids love these things. You turned his down, so I built one instead. The treehouse is for Ellie. The flowers are for you. Lucia, will you be with me? I'll spend the rest of my life making you and Ellie happy."Tears spilled out before I could stop them. Happy tears.Ellie bounced around the treehouse, too excited to stay still. I wiped my eyes and nodded.Half a year later, we had a small wedding at a chapel.Ellie walked behind me as the flower girl, tossing petals along my train.***A year after marrying Sean, it was time for Ellie's follow-up exam.Sean handled his visa early and flew back to Floravia with us.The second we arrived at Caldwell Medical Institute, my old Floravian number rang.A lawy

Ellie was always excited whenever Sean came over. After school, if she spotted him at the house, she'd instantly glue herself to him and drag him into building LEGO sets or puzzles with her.She wouldn't even give him weekends off. Every Saturday, she begged me to take her to the flower shop to see him.I smiled at Sean apologetically."Sorry. Is Ellie bothering you at work?""Not even a little. I like having her there. A kid makes the place feel alive. Otherwise it's just me alone in the shop all day, slowly dying of boredom."Ellie never caused trouble. If anything, she helped out.She wrapped bouquets, tied pretty little bows on them, and even introduced flowers to customers with weirdly impressive confidence.Sean ended up giving her a spare key.He stocked the shop with snacks, drinks, and toys so she could stop by whenever she wanted. After closing every night, he'd hold Ellie's hand while she skipped down the street, walk us home first, then leave only after making sur

After Harry and Kate warned him off, Pierce stopped showing up at my gate.To thank them, I cooked a huge meal and invited them over.I even packed up a bunch of vegetables for them to take home. Before leaving, Kate hesitated for a second, then looked at me."Lucia, guys like him don't give up that easily. Since he couldn't get to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Ellie. Just be careful."I instantly went on alert. After thinking about it all night, I took time off work and started driving Ellie to and from school myself.I didn't dare let her out of my sight. One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she suddenly looked up at me."Mommy, why does Jared's dad keep showing up near my school? Doesn't he want Jared anymore?"Every alarm bell in my head went off.I immediately turned off the hair dryer. "He didn't go near you, right? Did he say anything weird?"Ellie quickly shook her head. "The teachers know he's not my dad. Every time he shows up, they chase him away.

I turned around, stunned, and realized Ellie had gotten out of the car at some point. She grabbed the hem of my shirt, confusion written all over her face. The second Pierce heard her words, all the color drained from his face."Ellie, what did you just say? I'm your dad. Are you still mad at me, so you're saying that on purpose? Ellie, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me?"Ellie immediately shrank behind me. "My daddy died a long time ago. He visited me in a dream during surgery and said he'd always watch over me. So how could you be my daddy?"Remembering the doctor's warning and scared Pierce would trigger her condition, I quickly covered her ears and stepped in front of her, completely blocking her view of him."You heard her. Leave. Stop upsetting my daughter."His eyes turned red. His lips moved like he wanted to say something else, but before I could call the cops, he walked away in a daze. But he didn't give up.Every morning when I opened the curtains, I saw Pierce

It was Pierce. My heart slammed against my ribs, but I kept my face calm.I turned to Ellie. "Don't get out of the car. I'll be right back."I repeated it a few more times before walking to the front gate."What are you doing here?"After months apart, Pierce had gotten a lot thinner. He used to obsess over his appearance before leaving the apartment, making sure every strand of hair was in place. Now his suit hung off him.Dark circles sat under his eyes. Even his beard looked neglected."Lucia, is Ellie in the car?" Pierce sounded frantic as he tried to push past me toward it. "I knew she was okay. Let me see her. How's her recovery?"I immediately locked the gate and stood behind it."Stay away from my daughter. If you don't leave, I'm calling the cops.""Don't call them." Pierce grabbed the bars in panic and reached for me. "I've been looking for you forever. I know I was wrong. I've been through a lot. Thought about a lot too. I'm sorry. Just give me one chance to make
