Chapter 4

Author: Amber Fleck
He pulled out his phone and called the cops.

I was too weak to even get up. Blood filled my mouth, thick and metallic. My voice came out raw.

"They desecrated my mom's ashes like that, and you're seriously pretending not to see it?"

Pierce only checked whether Jared was hurt.

"He's just a kid. Why couldn't you talk things out? Besides, Daphne already tried to stop him."

The cops showed up fast. As they moved to put me in the squad car, I struggled. "Officer, I didn't even touch them!"

Daphne pointed at a bruise barely bigger than a fingernail on Jared's knee, tears pouring down her face. "She hurt my son like this. He's still so little. This could traumatize him forever!"

The two workers backed her up too.

I was taken to a detention center for disturbing the peace and sentenced to five full days.

The second I heard that, panic hit me. "Pierce, can't we settle this privately? You know Ellie's heart condition is serious. If she doesn't see me for five days, she'll panic. What if something happens to her?"

Pierce hesitated.

Daphne instantly wrapped herself around his arm. "Pierce, if you let this go now, Jared will think actions don't have consequences. He's still young. What if he grows up spoiled?"

Pierce's expression hardened immediately.

"Lucia, you were wrong. Let this be a lesson for both kids. I'll take care of Ellie. You can use this time to think about what you did."

"Pierce!"

I jumped up and tried to grab him, but an officer dragged me away to change.

I didn't even want to imagine what Ellie would go through after five days alone with Daphne and Jared.

The fear crushed me. I paced nonstop inside the tiny cell.

That night, I finally broke down.

I collapsed onto the hard bunk, and the pain from everything that happened finally hit all at once.

I closed my eyes, hoping sleep would make the time pass faster.

Less than five minutes later, someone jolted me awake.

A man in the next cell leaned against the bars and whistled. "You're hurt pretty bad. Figured I should wake you in case you died quietly over there."

I turned my back to him and ignored him.

Five minutes later, he woke me up again.

I barely got a second of uninterrupted sleep that whole night.

By morning, I was slumped against the wall, exhausted.

I tried to ask the guard to let me use the bathroom.

But the guy across from me always seemed to know. Every single time before I could speak, he called the guard over first.

I held it until my stomach cramped and cold sweat drenched my back.

Right before I blacked out, he smirked. "Pretty girl, that's what happens when you mess with people you shouldn't."

That's when I realized Pierce had paid someone to make my life hell in here.

I didn't even have the energy to hate him anymore.

I just wanted time to move faster.

By the fifth day, I'd been reduced to skin and bones.

Pierce was already waiting outside the detention center.

The second he saw me, pain flashed across his face.

He walked over and pulled me into his arms. "Did you learn your lesson? Your mom's ashes weren't completely ruined. I had someone gather what was left and place it in a new urn. She's been reburied in a better cemetery plot. Once you recover, I'll take you there."

I didn't answer. I shoved him away.

Then I pulled the papers from my bag and stuffed them into his hands.

"The money you paid for my mom's grave wasn't enough. Sign."

When Ellie turned seventeen, she went viral again after her paintings sold for sky-high prices. For her future, Sean and I decided to move back to Floravia and open an art gallery for her.Even if she stopped painting someday, she'd still have another path waiting for her.At the height of her popularity, Ellie started holding exhibitions all the time. One day, while helping a fan look for a lost bag, Ellie suddenly pointed at someone on the security footage."Mom, this guy's weird. He's always the first one here and the last one to leave. But he never asks for photos or autographs. What does he even want? You think he's trying to steal a painting?"The second I saw the blurry figure on the screen, my chest tightened. We hadn't seen each other in decades, but I recognized him instantly.Sean leaned over for a look too.He clearly realized who it was and started to say something, but I pressed a hand against his arm and lightly shook my head.I smiled at Ellie. "Maybe he's jus

Sean built a little treehouse in the woods beside my house.Ellie screamed and bolted inside. The second she shoved the door open, she gasped. Flowers filled every corner.Sean stepped up beside me. "Harry told me your ex once wanted to build Ellie a treehouse to win you back. Kids love these things. You turned his down, so I built one instead. The treehouse is for Ellie. The flowers are for you. Lucia, will you be with me? I'll spend the rest of my life making you and Ellie happy."Tears spilled out before I could stop them. Happy tears.Ellie bounced around the treehouse, too excited to stay still. I wiped my eyes and nodded.Half a year later, we had a small wedding at a chapel.Ellie walked behind me as the flower girl, tossing petals along my train.***A year after marrying Sean, it was time for Ellie's follow-up exam.Sean handled his visa early and flew back to Floravia with us.The second we arrived at Caldwell Medical Institute, my old Floravian number rang.A lawy

Ellie was always excited whenever Sean came over. After school, if she spotted him at the house, she'd instantly glue herself to him and drag him into building LEGO sets or puzzles with her.She wouldn't even give him weekends off. Every Saturday, she begged me to take her to the flower shop to see him.I smiled at Sean apologetically."Sorry. Is Ellie bothering you at work?""Not even a little. I like having her there. A kid makes the place feel alive. Otherwise it's just me alone in the shop all day, slowly dying of boredom."Ellie never caused trouble. If anything, she helped out.She wrapped bouquets, tied pretty little bows on them, and even introduced flowers to customers with weirdly impressive confidence.Sean ended up giving her a spare key.He stocked the shop with snacks, drinks, and toys so she could stop by whenever she wanted. After closing every night, he'd hold Ellie's hand while she skipped down the street, walk us home first, then leave only after making sur

After Harry and Kate warned him off, Pierce stopped showing up at my gate.To thank them, I cooked a huge meal and invited them over.I even packed up a bunch of vegetables for them to take home. Before leaving, Kate hesitated for a second, then looked at me."Lucia, guys like him don't give up that easily. Since he couldn't get to you, I'm worried he'll go straight to Ellie. Just be careful."I instantly went on alert. After thinking about it all night, I took time off work and started driving Ellie to and from school myself.I didn't dare let her out of my sight. One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she suddenly looked up at me."Mommy, why does Jared's dad keep showing up near my school? Doesn't he want Jared anymore?"Every alarm bell in my head went off.I immediately turned off the hair dryer. "He didn't go near you, right? Did he say anything weird?"Ellie quickly shook her head. "The teachers know he's not my dad. Every time he shows up, they chase him away.

I turned around, stunned, and realized Ellie had gotten out of the car at some point. She grabbed the hem of my shirt, confusion written all over her face. The second Pierce heard her words, all the color drained from his face."Ellie, what did you just say? I'm your dad. Are you still mad at me, so you're saying that on purpose? Ellie, I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me?"Ellie immediately shrank behind me. "My daddy died a long time ago. He visited me in a dream during surgery and said he'd always watch over me. So how could you be my daddy?"Remembering the doctor's warning and scared Pierce would trigger her condition, I quickly covered her ears and stepped in front of her, completely blocking her view of him."You heard her. Leave. Stop upsetting my daughter."His eyes turned red. His lips moved like he wanted to say something else, but before I could call the cops, he walked away in a daze. But he didn't give up.Every morning when I opened the curtains, I saw Pierce

It was Pierce. My heart slammed against my ribs, but I kept my face calm.I turned to Ellie. "Don't get out of the car. I'll be right back."I repeated it a few more times before walking to the front gate."What are you doing here?"After months apart, Pierce had gotten a lot thinner. He used to obsess over his appearance before leaving the apartment, making sure every strand of hair was in place. Now his suit hung off him.Dark circles sat under his eyes. Even his beard looked neglected."Lucia, is Ellie in the car?" Pierce sounded frantic as he tried to push past me toward it. "I knew she was okay. Let me see her. How's her recovery?"I immediately locked the gate and stood behind it."Stay away from my daughter. If you don't leave, I'm calling the cops.""Don't call them." Pierce grabbed the bars in panic and reached for me. "I've been looking for you forever. I know I was wrong. I've been through a lot. Thought about a lot too. I'm sorry. Just give me one chance to make
