Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Bun
My dad had reserved a private room at the hotel to welcome me back and celebrate my return. My mother and sister insisted on inviting Jacob, saying it would be too pitiful to leave him home alone. When Chloe heard he was coming, she didn't hesitate—she brought her parents along as well.

At the table, my mom and sister eagerly competed to serve Jacob first.

"Jacob, your wrist is injured. Let me get that for you."

"Don't worry about a thing. Just eat more."

Chloe was even quicker, snatching the dish I was about to serve and placing it in Jacob's bowl before I could move.

I was so irritated I could only laugh bitterly, setting my fork down hard on the table.

Her parents clearly noticed my displeasure and nudged her subtly.

"Why don't you serve some for Jack, too?"

But Chloe shot me an impatient glare and snapped, "Jack, who exactly are you trying to impress? You're being so petty—I'm really starting to wonder if we're even compatible."

My dad calmly dropped a large chicken drumstick into my bowl and said in a neutral tone, "Yeah… maybe you're not."

Chloe pretended not to care, but I noticed her parents' expressions stiffen. Her father's face darkened as he scolded her harshly.

"Chloe! How can you speak to Jack like that?"

Immediately, the atmosphere at the table tightened.

That's when Jacob sprang into action. He stood up, smiling,

"Jack, this soup is really fresh. Let me get you a bowl."

Before I could respond, he picked up an empty bowl and ladled a spoonful of soup. As he weaved past the others to hand it to me, he stumbled slightly, and the scalding soup sloshed over the edge, landing squarely on his hand.

His skin immediately reddened.

Panicked, Jacob pressed his hand to his own wrist and scrambled to apologize.

"I'm so sorry, Jack! I didn't mean it. I didn't know your foot would be there when I walked by. I… I just wanted to lighten the mood. Really, I'm so sorry."

He hurriedly grabbed a napkin, trying to wipe the soup off my pants. I waved him off—it was too awkward to let him do that.

But in the next second, my mom and sister rushed to surround him.

Chloe, equally flustered, checked his injury while glaring at me.

"Jack! This space is huge, and you deliberately stuck your foot out to trip Jacob, didn't you? How could you be so cruel?"

I sneered inwardly. With all this space, how did he manage to trip over my foot?

Just as my mom and sister were about to pile on with their accusations, my dad slammed his fork onto the table with a deafening crack.

The previously noisy private room fell instantly silent.

The reason was simple: this household was still run by my dad, and no one dared challenge his authority—at least, not yet.

As for Chloe's family business, it depended on my dad's company to survive and grow.

Carmen pushed open the door to the private room at the far end of the corridor.Inside, it was pitch black. She shoved me gently forward, and in the next instant, the lights snapped on.It was the hotel's secret garden. Trees were strung with colorful lights, and all around us were gift boxes of every shape and size—twenty-four in total."Jack," she began, her voice steady but betraying a tremor, "since you said I'm like a heroine, I won't hold back."I like you. I've liked you all along."When you told me you had a girlfriend, I had given up… but then I heard you broke up. "Well… now that you're single, maybe you'll consider me."She led me down the rows of gifts, her words quivering despite her attempt at calm. One by one, she introduced them: each gift marked a year of my life, from age one to twenty-four."You're the past I missed," she whispered, turning to face me, "but I don't want to miss your future."Tears welled in her eyes.My chest tightened so fiercely I could

"Do you have any idea how busy I am? If Mom wanted to talk to me, why did she send you?" Megan arrived first, spotted me, and immediately fired off a question, her voice sharp with irritation.Chloe appeared right behind her."Calling me over on Valentine's Day… Jack, if you want to get back together, just say so. Honestly, you're not even worth one of Jacob's fingernails. I'm only here to tell you—don't even think about it."A smug smirk curved her lips, but her gaze quickly drifted past me, landing on my sister standing nearby. The two of them shared a confused look."I asked you here tonight to show you something," I said, leading them toward the private room my mother had booked.I pushed the door open, gently. My mother and Jacob never expected anyone would barge into their private dining room, especially in such an upscale restaurant. And there they were—right in front of us—the two of them locked in an unexpectedly intimate moment."What… what are you all doing here?" "Chloe, what's the deal here? Are you just putting on a show?""Chloe, don't joke around. I'm treating dinner later. Just swipe your card already.""Come on, Chloe, don't make the staff stand there. Just pay already!""You can't back out at an auction… Chloe, are you playing some kind of game?"The people at her table grew more restless by the second, their irritation with Chloe slipping through their words.I couldn’t help it. I let out a low chuckle and guided Carmen past them.Chloe shot me a glare, her jaw tight, and forced out, "Jack… can you just spot me? I’ll pay you back first thing tomorrow.""Of course!" I replied with exaggerated cheer. Her eyes lit up instantly. I pulled a card from my wallet and made a deliberate motion toward her.Just as her fingers brushed it, I casually slid the card in front of Carmen instead."Oh, my bad," I said lightly. "I usually only hand my card over to my girlfriend. I'll have to check with Carmen if she's ok with me lending it out."

Carmen glanced at the people sitting around Chloe, then suddenly hooked her arm through mine."Since you're broken up, don't talk to her so much. I might get jealous."I looked at her in surprise, and she winked at me playfully.Carmen's move was a sharp slap in the face to Chloe.I understood immediately. Sliding my arm around Carmen's shoulders, I felt her body stiffen for a moment before she leaned in naturally.I didn't mind. Instead, I turned to the crowd with a calm, confident smile."You think I came here for you? You wish. Didn't you see my girlfriend right here?"Chloe's friends froze, utterly speechless. At the neighboring tables, some couldn't help but laugh, while others whispered quietly."Didn't that girl just claim the guy came for her?""A young lady should at least have some shame.""Shh—quiet, that's the Parker family heiress."Chloe and her friends' faces flushed red and paled in rapid succession. When they looked at me, their eyes seemed ready to devour

In my previous life, Benji and his family had helped my dad and me countless times, and his daughter, Carmen, was no exception. So I said, "She's a really good person—helpful, loyal, and principled. Sometimes she even feels like a heroine from a novel."My dad asked, "So, who do you think is better—her or Chloe?"I raised an eyebrow. My dad had never asked a question like this before. Maybe he wanted to distract me from any lingering hurt over Chloe.Without hesitation, I replied, "There's no comparison. Carmen is upright, and you can tell her family raised her well. She's more cultured and sensible, and incredibly smart. I've read some of her proposals—her ideas are things I would never think of. I really admire her…"Suddenly, a soft chuckle sounded from behind me.I tensed, then slowly turned around.Carmen was leaning casually against the doorframe of my dad's office, one hand holding a folder, the other twirling the tip of her long hair. A lingering smile played on her lips

Mrs. Parker's attitude flipped a complete 180 degrees in an instant; all the sarcasm and smugness from before vanished. She hurriedly sat back down, plastering a flattering smile on her face."Jack, you know how stubborn Chloe is. She says one thing with her mouth, but in her heart… she really likes you the most."Beside her, Mr. Parker quickly chimed in, "Yes, yes! I will talk to her!"Chloe snorted, unable to hold her composure any longer. Tears streamed down her face in large, hot drops."Jack… please don't do this. Let's work it out," she pleaded, her voice trembling with a forced softness.I almost laughed. These people never failed to amaze me. When backed into a corner, they suddenly remembered how to beg. Where was that humility before?"Chloe," I said, my tone cold and sharp, "you have some nerve. Do you have any idea what you've done? And now you have the audacity to ask to 'work it out'? Take a good look in the mirror—how did your ego get so big?"That last bit of pre
