LOGINElara's POV
His reached out and gripped my chin "What the hell are you talking about?"
I let the scent still clinging faintly to his skin settle over me one more time—sharp, floral, humiliating. It had been there the whole night, long before he'd ever touched me.
I was done.
However, his hand came up along my jaw again, the same way it had earlier, before I'd stopped him—like the argument itself had rebooted some old habit of his, the one where every disagreement between us ended the exact same way. He leaned in.
I turned my face away.
"Orion. No."
"Elara." His voice dropped low, certain."You are my wife, my partner, and you have no right to refuse your Alpha."
I put my hand against his chest again, firmer this time. "I'm not doing this. Not tonight. Maybe not ever again."
He went angry.
Then he raised his hand and gripped my wrist tightly, about to tear off my thin nightgown.
Then his phone rang.
The sound of a little girl crying pierced the quiet of the room, followed by Celeste's panicked voice over the speaker. I couldn't make out the words, but I watched Orion's face transform. Real, immediate terror flashed in his eyes—the kind of concern that moved his entire body. It was more emotion than he'd shown during the entire conversation about our dying daughter.
An icy weight settled in my chest.
He hung up. Before I could say a word, he was already pulling his shirt back on, grabbing his jacket, heading for the door.
"Something came up. You don't need to wait for me tonight."
His footsteps hammered down the stairs. Urgent. Certain. The front door clicked shut, and he was gone.
I sat in the silence of our bedroom. That kind of urgency. That kind of care. I had never once seen it aimed at me. Or at Mia.
It was over.
I was done waiting on him.

"Elara." His voice dropped low, certain."You are my wife, my mater, and you have no right to refuse your Alpha."

His footsteps hammered down the stairs. Urgent. Certain. The front door clicked shut, and he was gone.
I sat in the silence of our bedroom. That kind of urgency. That kind of care. I had never once seen it aimed at me. Or at Mia.
I sat there a long time after the front door clicked shut behind him, staring into the dark, and my mind went back—unbidden—to the first time I ever saw him.
I was seventeen, working a summer job at the same supermarket where my mother had worked before she passed. He walked through the door and stopped at my register.
He wore a black suit, tailored to a standard I'd never seen in person. The fabric moved like dark water, making the sharp, handsome angles of his face look like something out of another world entirely. Powerful. Untouchable.
I had never seen eyes that shade of blue—like sapphires dipped in moonlight. One look, and my heart just… lurched.
"Can I… help you with something?" My voice came out embarrassingly unsteady.
He didn't answer right away. He just stared. Slowly, his eyes shifted to silver. Something moved inside them, hot and restless.
But his voice, when it finally came, was perfectly composed. "I've imagined this a thousand different ways." A short, humorless pause. "I never pictured my mate being… someone like you. An ordinary human."
Mate? Human?
So he was one of them. A werewolf. The mysterious, obscenely wealthy elite people whispered about in Newland City. My fingers froze on the cash.
Growing up in a world where werewolves and humans lived side by side, I'd heard the stories my whole life: they were built like athletes, smart as whips, and moving in circles so far above mine they might as well have been a different species. But I'd never actually met one.
I was seventeen—a high school junior whose dad drove long-haul freight and whose brother had dropped out to work at a local auto shop.
And yet, standing right in front of me was a handsome werewolf who looked like he'd been carved for a magazine cover: at least six-foot-three, wearing a tailored suit with a Patek Philippe on his wrist, telling me I was his fated mate.
There was no way this was real.
"Sir, I think you've got the wrong person." I looked down, trying to count change, but my hands were shaking. What the hell was wrong with me?
I could feel his gaze like pressure—sharp and ancient and heavy, like a warning from something older than either of us. I couldn't breathe right.
There was a scent coming off him. Cedar and whiskey. My palms went damp. My face went red. My breath got short in a way I had no good explanation for.
I didn't know what to call what I was feeling. The closest thing I had was the stolen, guilty rush from the one time I'd accidentally stumbled across something I shouldn't have on my brother's laptop—hot and unwanted and impossible to put back.
Fear tangled up with want. Insecurity twisted up with the desperate urge to close the distance between us.
The contradiction was dizzying. And when I finally worked up the nerve to look at him again—those pale silver eyes pulling something out of me I hadn't known was in there—a voice I didn't recognize rose up from somewhere deep in my chest:
We want him.
But… who said that?
I'm human. I don't —
His fingers closed around my jaw. Gentle enough not to hurt, tight enough that I couldn't look away. His teeth were clenched. Whatever was happening inside him, he was barely keeping a lid on it.
And then he said the words that broke something open in me.
"Having a human for a mate is the greatest failure of my entire life."
Orion's POVIt took me a full ten minutes to actually process what Elara had just said. It landed like something a man says to a woman he's decided not to take responsibility for, the kind of line you hear in a bar at closing time, tossed off without a second thought. When had Elara become someone who could say something like that?I realized I'd never actually met this version of her. Sharp, quick, a little cruel in a way that suited her better than I would have expected. She wasn't obedient anymore. She was, somehow, exactly the kind of woman with real spine that I'd always told myself I wanted.I wasn't angry with her. If anything, I felt something closer to relief. She'd still bothered to hurt me on her way out. That meant she wasn't as indifferent as she wanted me to believe.I turned to Celeste and told her I needed to go too."Take care of yourself. I'll see what I can do about getting your sentence reduced." I tried to sound comforting.Celeste's tears started again. "Just sta
Elara's POVI looked at Orion. His eyes were that certain. Everything I knew about him told me he wouldn't wear that expression unless it was true. If it weren't true, his pride would never have let him say it out loud. He was cruel. He'd never once been a liar.My heart clenched like something had grabbed it in a fist. I pressed a hand over my chest. For one strange second, I wished it would just stop beating.Celeste's tears kept falling. She looked at Orion like a woman whose heart had genuinely been broken. And honestly, I believed she had been, at least in part. The hand over my chest slowly loosened.Celeste never answered him. A cold laugh climbed up my throat before I could stop it.Orion turned to me, pleading in his eyes. "Give me two more minutes. Just two. I'll make everything clear."I didn't say anything. I'd just realized something.Even if he'd never slept with Celeste. Even if Lily wasn't his. None of that made what he'd done to me and Mia forgivable. If anything, thi
Elara's POVI hadn't expected Orion's temper to hold up this well. Even when I snapped at him more than once, he swallowed his pride and let me have my way, none of the usual push-back I expected from him. It didn't soften me, though. I stayed because I was curious. That was all.Five minutes later, a guard brought Celeste in, wrists and ankles bound in silver."The prisoner has been injected with a wolf-suppressant," Officer Kade said, addressing us both, his tone rehearsed from a hundred prior visits. "She's lost all capacity to attack. You can proceed safely." He glanced at the clock on the wall, checking it against his own watch out of habit. "Your visit is limited to twenty minutes. If anything either of you says makes her uncomfortable, she can press the button on the table and request removal. If you see any sign of aggression from her, you can press it yourselves and end the visit immediately."Orion and I both nodded. Celeste watched me the entire time with a cold, flat stare
Elara's POVAfter breakfast, we dropped Mia off with Fiona at the pool club Samuel had recently bought. He assigned two female gammas to watch over her. I thought he was being excessive, hiring bodyguards for an afternoon at a swim club, but I'd learned by now not to argue with his sense of caution.Samuel just smiled. "I only want her making friends."The two gammas, Wren and Talia, were kind and gentle, both good with kids. They hit it off with Mia almost instantly, and within minutes she was showing them her favorite dive off the low board like they'd known each other for years, chattering the whole time about the swim lessons Fiona had promised her.We didn't waste time after that. Samuel and I drove out to the werewolf prison on Blood Fang Peak.Even driving fast, we still arrived half an hour late. Orion was waiting outside the gate, his jaw tight, temper visibly fraying from the wait, standing exactly where I imagined he'd been standing the entire thirty minutes. Samuel and I b
Elara's POVMy heart felt like it was going to climb straight out of my throat.Three seconds later, the full report appeared in front of me. I saw the line clearly. Three weeks pregnant.Dr. Merritt took the paper and studied it carefully. She kept her voice steady. "You're pregnant. And the baby is healthy."My mouth opened. Nothing came out. Tears started falling and wouldn't stop.I threw my arms around her. "This is wonderful. Thank you. Mia, she's saved!"Dr. Merritt and Damien were both thrilled. Damien said, excited, "I knew it. I knew Mia was a lucky kid. She's going to make it."But Dr. Merritt took my hand and looked at me, serious. "I'm the one who helped bring this life into the world. If I ever find out you love this baby any less than you love Mia, I will come for you."I understood exactly what she was worried about.I didn't love Orion anymore. And this baby had been conceived at a time when neither of us loved the other.Someday, I might have another child with Samue
Elara's POVAfter Samuel left, I slept harder than I had in years. No crisis waiting for me. No trouble on the horizon. Just quiet, steadier than anything I'd felt in a long time.Fiona called me down for dinner after dark. Mia was already at the table, grinning up at me. "Mom, does my new daddy make you feel safe?"I nodded, running my fingers through her soft hair. "What about you, Mia? Does Samuel make you feel safe?"She nodded back. "I like him being my daddy. Back at White Moon, I was always scared Lily would steal Daddy again. Scared Grandma and Auntie would go back to being mean to us. Scared Daddy would get mad at me for not being as smart as Lily. I worried every single day. But not anymore." She looked up at me, dead earnest. "My new daddy isn't picky like that. He's gentle. He loves us."My eyes stung. If she hadn't told me herself, I never would've known how much she'd been carrying around back then. Every single day. The guilt hit me hard.I pulled her close. "Those days
