Elara's POV
"I'm sorry, Ms. Vance."
Dr. Landon set the chart down, avoiding my eyes. "The bone marrow match has been reassigned. There's nothing more we can do."
"But we've been on the waiting list for a year. Who? Who took my daughter's donor?"
My daughter, Mia, has Bloodwither Syndrome.
A bone-marrow transplant is her only shot at survival. For an entire year, I'd pulled every string. Today was supposed to be the turning point, my daughter has finally waited to a suitable bone marrow.
However, we're back to square one now.
Dr. Landon with a look that bordered on pity. "You might still want to reach out to the child's father for a compatibility test. If he's a match…"
Mia's father. My husband. Alpha Orion.
The memory of the first time I'd gone to ask him blow. He'd been sitting behind that massive desk, looking up at me for half a second before saying he was too busy. The second time, he had a meeting. The third time, he shoved me back with barely contained contempt.
"Begging me is literally all you know how to do, isn't it? Stop bothering me over something this trivial."
Three times. Not a single yes. After that, I stopped asking.
But now, I had nowhere else to go. I pulled out my phone and dialed Orion's number. One ring. Then silence—declined.
A few seconds later, a text flashed across the screen: In a meeting.
As a human, I had no other way to reach him. No mind-link, no mate bond. So I brought Mia home and I waited.
By ten o'clock that night, he still hadn't returned. I called again. It took two tries before he finally picked up.
"What happen?" Background noise bled through the line, his voice sharp with his signature impatience.
I raised mine so he could hear me over the din. "Could you come in tomorrow for Mia's compatibility test? We need you, Orion—"
"I'm busy."
"But Mia is your daughter! You can't just stand by and watch her die."
He let out a slow, heavy breath. "That's enough, Elara. Stop exaggerating Mia's condition just to get my attention."
"I'm not exaggerating. This is serious. The doctor said—"
"Mia looks fine to me. Quit being so dramatic."
He was about to hang up. And then, I heard it. A small, bright voice on the other end of the line: "Daddy, come over here!"
Orion murmured something back to her. His voice was warm. Easy. A version of him I hadn't seen in years.
The call went dead.
My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor. I sat on the couch, paralyzed. That single word—Daddy—echoed in my skull, sinking through bone, pinning me in place.
Who was that little girl? Had I misheard? Why was she calling my husband Daddy?
Then my screen lit up with a F******k notification. Celeste has posted a new photo.
I reached down with trembling fingers and tapped the notification.
Fireworks bloomed across a night sky. Orion was holding a little girl in his arms the way you hold a child who belongs to you—head dipped, lips pressed to her cheek. Celeste stood beside them, her arm hooked through his, her face tilted against his shoulder. She was radiant.
A birthday party at Bayfront Park. The three of them, together, looking exactly like a family.
My fingers froze. Those fireworks were brilliant and blinding, falling out of the sky like a hundred knives, one after another, straight into my chest.
"So he wouldn't take my calls because he was celebrating Celeste's daughter's birthday…" I whispered to the empty, dark living room. "Does he even know our daughter is running out of time? That without that marrow, she's going to die?"
Tears slid down my face and splashed onto the back of my hand. Cold.
I don't know how long I sat there in the dark before I heard his key turn in the lock.
He came home just before dawn.
Seeing the light still on, he walked over and leaned down to kiss me. "Sorry. Work ran late."
He always did this. He gave me just enough warmth to keep the illusion alive.
But then I caught the scent.
It was heavy and unmistakable. The signature of another she-wolf—wild white roses with a sharp, metallic edge underneath. A sweetness with teeth.
My stomach clenched.
Orion didn't seem to notice, or didn't care to. His long fingers slipped beneath the silk of my nightgown, his touch already demanding. He shrugged off his jacket, loosened his tie, and started working his way through his buttons.
In bed, he was always dominant. He never needed to ask if I was willing; he had always known, better than anyone, how completely I'd given myself to him. Body and soul, year after year, with nothing held back.
But right now, all I can call back is him accompanying Celeste and another child set off fireworks.
I pressed my hand flat against his chest.
"Don't. Stay away from me!"
He went still.
"Elara—"
"I can smell her on you." My voice didn't shake.
His jaw tightened. He didn't deny it.
He just stayed where he was for a moment, his hand still resting against the sheet where I'd pushed him back, and something moved behind his eyes that I couldn't name.
"You're imagining things again," he said. Flat. Final.
I didn't answer. There wasn't anything left to say tonight that hadn't already been said a hundred different ways, in a hundred different rooms, over five years.
"The title of Luna," I said calmly, "You can give it to whoever you actually want it to go to."
Orion's POVIt took me a full ten minutes to actually process what Elara had just said. It landed like something a man says to a woman he's decided not to take responsibility for, the kind of line you hear in a bar at closing time, tossed off without a second thought. When had Elara become someone who could say something like that?I realized I'd never actually met this version of her. Sharp, quick, a little cruel in a way that suited her better than I would have expected. She wasn't obedient anymore. She was, somehow, exactly the kind of woman with real spine that I'd always told myself I wanted.I wasn't angry with her. If anything, I felt something closer to relief. She'd still bothered to hurt me on her way out. That meant she wasn't as indifferent as she wanted me to believe.I turned to Celeste and told her I needed to go too."Take care of yourself. I'll see what I can do about getting your sentence reduced." I tried to sound comforting.Celeste's tears started again. "Just sta
Elara's POVI looked at Orion. His eyes were that certain. Everything I knew about him told me he wouldn't wear that expression unless it was true. If it weren't true, his pride would never have let him say it out loud. He was cruel. He'd never once been a liar.My heart clenched like something had grabbed it in a fist. I pressed a hand over my chest. For one strange second, I wished it would just stop beating.Celeste's tears kept falling. She looked at Orion like a woman whose heart had genuinely been broken. And honestly, I believed she had been, at least in part. The hand over my chest slowly loosened.Celeste never answered him. A cold laugh climbed up my throat before I could stop it.Orion turned to me, pleading in his eyes. "Give me two more minutes. Just two. I'll make everything clear."I didn't say anything. I'd just realized something.Even if he'd never slept with Celeste. Even if Lily wasn't his. None of that made what he'd done to me and Mia forgivable. If anything, thi
Elara's POVI hadn't expected Orion's temper to hold up this well. Even when I snapped at him more than once, he swallowed his pride and let me have my way, none of the usual push-back I expected from him. It didn't soften me, though. I stayed because I was curious. That was all.Five minutes later, a guard brought Celeste in, wrists and ankles bound in silver."The prisoner has been injected with a wolf-suppressant," Officer Kade said, addressing us both, his tone rehearsed from a hundred prior visits. "She's lost all capacity to attack. You can proceed safely." He glanced at the clock on the wall, checking it against his own watch out of habit. "Your visit is limited to twenty minutes. If anything either of you says makes her uncomfortable, she can press the button on the table and request removal. If you see any sign of aggression from her, you can press it yourselves and end the visit immediately."Orion and I both nodded. Celeste watched me the entire time with a cold, flat stare
Elara's POVAfter breakfast, we dropped Mia off with Fiona at the pool club Samuel had recently bought. He assigned two female gammas to watch over her. I thought he was being excessive, hiring bodyguards for an afternoon at a swim club, but I'd learned by now not to argue with his sense of caution.Samuel just smiled. "I only want her making friends."The two gammas, Wren and Talia, were kind and gentle, both good with kids. They hit it off with Mia almost instantly, and within minutes she was showing them her favorite dive off the low board like they'd known each other for years, chattering the whole time about the swim lessons Fiona had promised her.We didn't waste time after that. Samuel and I drove out to the werewolf prison on Blood Fang Peak.Even driving fast, we still arrived half an hour late. Orion was waiting outside the gate, his jaw tight, temper visibly fraying from the wait, standing exactly where I imagined he'd been standing the entire thirty minutes. Samuel and I b
Elara's POVMy heart felt like it was going to climb straight out of my throat.Three seconds later, the full report appeared in front of me. I saw the line clearly. Three weeks pregnant.Dr. Merritt took the paper and studied it carefully. She kept her voice steady. "You're pregnant. And the baby is healthy."My mouth opened. Nothing came out. Tears started falling and wouldn't stop.I threw my arms around her. "This is wonderful. Thank you. Mia, she's saved!"Dr. Merritt and Damien were both thrilled. Damien said, excited, "I knew it. I knew Mia was a lucky kid. She's going to make it."But Dr. Merritt took my hand and looked at me, serious. "I'm the one who helped bring this life into the world. If I ever find out you love this baby any less than you love Mia, I will come for you."I understood exactly what she was worried about.I didn't love Orion anymore. And this baby had been conceived at a time when neither of us loved the other.Someday, I might have another child with Samue
Elara's POVAfter Samuel left, I slept harder than I had in years. No crisis waiting for me. No trouble on the horizon. Just quiet, steadier than anything I'd felt in a long time.Fiona called me down for dinner after dark. Mia was already at the table, grinning up at me. "Mom, does my new daddy make you feel safe?"I nodded, running my fingers through her soft hair. "What about you, Mia? Does Samuel make you feel safe?"She nodded back. "I like him being my daddy. Back at White Moon, I was always scared Lily would steal Daddy again. Scared Grandma and Auntie would go back to being mean to us. Scared Daddy would get mad at me for not being as smart as Lily. I worried every single day. But not anymore." She looked up at me, dead earnest. "My new daddy isn't picky like that. He's gentle. He loves us."My eyes stung. If she hadn't told me herself, I never would've known how much she'd been carrying around back then. Every single day. The guilt hit me hard.I pulled her close. "Those days
