Author: Perfect Timing
I looked up to see Jane.

"Silvia, you can't do this."

I met her gaze, which was filled with an eerie silence.

"Why not?" I asked quietly.

Predictably, Jane panicked, her urgency clashing with my cool demeanor.

The room was filled with bewilderment.

Jane shrieked, rushing to his side. I seized the moment to back off, putting some much-needed distance between us, my phone still recording. "Hold it right there! We're still rolling, Dr. Harris," I smirked at her, "The cops will be just as interested in this little performance as the insurance company." Jane went stiff as a board, her face draining of color. "You set us up!"Chester, gritting his teeth against the stabbing pain, spat out the words, his gaze filled with such malice it seemed he could tear me apart. I scanned the area warily and edged toward the fire escape. As Jane stooped to assist Chester, I seized the moment and dashed down the stairs. Chester, fighting through his agony, shoved Jane aside. "Go after her! If she escapes, we're done for!"Jane stumbled after me, and I intentionally slowed my pace. Just as she was about to grab me, I sidestepped, sending her tumbling to the ground. The wail of the siren grew from a distant hum to a deafening roar. Piece by

I let out an icy, mocking laugh, fixing Chester with a steady gaze."What was that? Say it again?"Chester, clearly feeling guilty, tried to speak, but Jane yanked him back. She tilted her chin up, staring me down with defiance."We've come this far, no point in hiding anything now."You have to take me with you, or I'll blow the whistle on your little insurance scam."And once we're in Tylandra, Chester has to make me his wife. I'll be the one in charge, and you'll be second fiddle."I'm carrying Chester's child, after all."With that, she proudly showed off her belly, her eyes daring me to challenge her.I could not help but laugh bitterly. In just a couple of weeks, she's supposedly pregnant with his son. They really think I'm an idiot.Chester quickly stepped closer and took my hand."Honey, Jane's been a big help to us."If she stays at this hospital, she might give us away."We owe her, and I've heard that in Tylandra, a man can have more than one wife."Plus, you

They finished their confessions and looked at me anxiously.I did not give them the outburst or the breakdown they were bracing for. Instead, I was unsettlingly calm."What's the deal with our daughter? What happened to her?"I caught Chester off guard; he clearly did not expect me to brush off his fling with Jane so easily.Panic flickered in his eyes before he stammered out, "Wendy's death; It was an accident."I did not let him finish. In one swift motion, I yanked back the white sheet from the cart next to us, revealing my daughter's body. Her small form lay there, stark under the harsh light."The doctor said she choked on a fish bone, and that it slashed her throat."My eyes were razor-sharp as they cut to Jane's pale face and then settled on my daughter's still form."However, look at this cloth—just a few random spots of blood."I examined my daughter's throat. The cut was too clean, no sign of a jagged fish bone wound.I knew better; the fish I gave her was boneless

Don't tell me they're not actually dead."A trace of alarm flashed in her eyes, as if she made a tough choice."Silvia, come with me."She led me to a hospital room I had never seen before. The door swung open, and there stood Chester, who was supposed to have been a fixture in the morgue for the past two weeks.I nodded at him, my

I staggered, my nerves wound tight. My dad took everyone I loved. Was my little girl his next target? What did I do to deserve that?Rage cut through the dread. If there was no escape, then I would not run.I inhaled deeply and reached for Wendy's hand. "Sweetie, let's go keep Grandpa company with some spicy stew," I said.hI grabbed two takeout containers filled with spicy stew and tender slices of meat and led my daughter to my dad's gravesite. One by one, I shoved the meat into my mouth, chewing with a fury as I stared down the smiling photo on his headstone, tears streaming down my face."Dad!
