When the door finally creaked open, it was my cousin, Breanna, who looked down at me with wide eyes.

“You need to go.”

“What?”

“Find your native friend, and go. I packed some things for you. Go to your room and change, but you need to be gone in like ten minutes, Eileen.”

“Breanna, what is going on?”

“I want a chance at a life that is not here, Eileen. And Arvin is willing to offer that. but not if you are here. So, go!”

I looked into Breanna’s muddled eyes and saw what I thought was a glimmer of desperation, and possibly hope. None of the mischievous, strong willed Breanna I had known. However, I also had heard the men outside the window and was not about to pass up the chance she was offering me.
