LOGINEvelyn's Point of View
"Ah!" I bolted upright in bed, eyes wide, searching the room in a panic. The familiar shapes of my bedroom slowly steadied me. A dream? A steamy dream? I touched my cheek. It was burning. The shiver his calloused fingertips had left on my skin still lingered, so vivid and yet so unreal. "Why would I dream something like that?" I smacked myself lightly on the forehead. "Evelyn Hart, you're getting married. If you're going to fantasize about a man, it should at least be your own fiancé." I picked up my phone and lit the screen. A handsome face smiled back at me, warm enough to melt anyone's heart, his eyes full of gentleness. Julian Ashford, tomorrow is our wedding. Tomorrow, I become your bride. **** The stretch limousine carried me through the city in a billowing white wedding gown, a long line of bridal cars trailing behind us, racing toward the venue. Suddenly, the car braked hard. I lurched forward and braced myself against the seat. "What happened?" "Two cars collided up ahead and they're blocking the road," our family driver answered. "I'll go see what's going on. Don't worry, Miss Hart. We have plenty of time before we're due." I watched him walk toward the wreck until a cluster of onlookers hid him from view. A few minutes passed. I fiddled with my bouquet and checked my phone. Then the driver’s door opened and he slid back into the seat. “All sorted, Miss. They’re moving the cars now.” I glanced up at the rearview mirror. Something about him seemed off. His cap was pulled lower than usual, and he kept his face angled away from me. Mr. Cole had driven for our family since I was twelve, and he always had a joke or a grumble about traffic. This man said nothing more. “Mr. Cole? Are you all right?” “Fine, Miss.” The voice was a little rougher than I remembered. “Just the nerves of a big day.” He’s probably as stressed as I am. I shrugged it off and turned back to the window. It was my wedding day, and I was seeing ghosts in every shadow. The damaged cars were dragged to the roadside, and the bridal car pulled away again. The hotel where the wedding was to be held came into view. Nervously, I smoothed my gown, and my heart dropped. A long tear ran through the hem. It must have happened during that sudden stop. The wedding was minutes away, and my gown was ruined. I called Julian at once. "Julian, something happened on the road and my dress is torn." "Are you hurt?" His voice was full of concern, soothing my panic. "I'm fine, but we're almost at the hotel. What do I do?" I was sweating from sheer worry. "Don't worry. Leave it to me." Julian's smile came through the phone, as gentle as the refined, gentlemanly face I knew so well. "All you have to do is wait to be my bride." "Mm," I answered sweetly. As I was fidgeting, the car stopped. Nonetheless, it was a different entrance of the hotel. A wedding planner was already waiting and hurried me toward a private room to change into a traditional bridal gown. Did Julian change something? I had a lot of questions but it was addressed because of these people helping me dress. The red silk skirt was embroidered with a phoenix in fine gold thread, spreading its wings. Red jade and carnelian formed its body, and deep-sea black pearls were set as its eyes. It looked alive, as if it might soar into the heavens, a masterpiece of craftsmanship. For a moment I felt a flicker of doubt. I had never seen this gown before. Then the red veil came down over my face, and all I could see were the swaying tassels at its four corners. A tall, strong hand closed around mine and held it firmly. My small hand disappeared completely inside his, and my heart gave a tremble. The man in the crimson groom's attire led me forward with care, a faint, barely visible smile curving his lips.Evelyn's Point of View "You invited me to come along, and now you're backing out?" Sebastian's smile was warm, his eyes locked on me. "Tell you what. Say something sweet and I'll think about it.""Sebastian," I said.He only smiled and said nothing.I was at my wit's end. "Seb.""Again." His answer was a single word.I blinked at him and gave up some ground. "Forget it. I won't go."That was what I said, but my pouting lips told a different story, one of indignation I didn't dare voice. I must have looked like a wronged little sulk."So delicate." He set me down, muttered something under his breath, and turned to leave.I reached to lock the door, and his voice drifted in from the other side, edged with warning. "This is my house."Meaning he had a key, and if I wanted to lock him out, I'd better think about whether my small frame could handle what came next."I'm not locking it! I'm just closing it." I made my voice as meek as I could. What else could I do against a man I couldn't o
Evelyn's Point of View My genuine feelings for Julian were like a slap across Sebastian’s face. Combined with his malicious suspicions, they shattered what little remaining reason he had.He pressed me against the wall, his tall, powerful frame pinning me in place. My desperate struggles looked like a joke in front of him.Sebastian seized both of my wrists and shoved them upward, subduing me with effortless strength. Then his thin lips, burning with fury, crashed down onto mine in a punishing, forceful kiss.“No…” The syllable I had just cried out was sealed by his overbearing mouth. His kiss was domineering and absolute, giving me no chance to breathe, as if he meant to devour me whole. My eyes flew wide in terror. I shoved hard at his chest and twisted my head desperately to the side, trying to escape. I did not want to make the same mistake again. His kiss was far too aggressive and overbearing. The ruthless plunder left me nowhere to retreat; I could only endure it passively.“M
Evelyn's Point of View I let out a breath, and the color slowly came back into my face. "Could you get me something to wear?"Sebastian nodded toward a paper bag that had come in with the breakfast. "Want me to dress you?" He hooked a finger under my chin and tilted my face up, his gaze burning into mine."No." His eyes narrowed, and I rushed to fix it. "Have you eaten yet? Go ahead and eat. I'll change on my own.""Is my Evie worried about me?" He smiled, then pressed his mouth to mine in a long, deep kiss before releasing me.I nodded hard. My heart was in my throat, and it was pure fear."Husband and wife, and still so shy." He drew his hand back. "Fine, have it your way. Get dressed like a good girl. I'll be waiting downstairs."My grip tightened on the paper bag.My eyes fell to the bed. The white sheets still bore the marks of the night, a reminder that I was no longer untouched. But there was no blood. Wait. No blood? His accusation echoed in my head: Evelyn, you slept with m
Evelyn's Point of View A moment later came the sound of silk tearing."Ah!"For a full three seconds I couldn't move. Then I screamed."You're insane! I don't know you!" My eyes flew wide, and something in my head pulled tight as a wire."Evie, you never used to talk to me like that." Sebastian lowered his head, and I felt his breath against my skin, heavier now. "Be good. Call me Seb.""No." I was close to breaking."I said, call me Seb." He pressed the point, fixed on that single name in a way that chilled me.I had no other move left. "Seb," I choked out. "It's a mistake, I swear. Please let me go. Or find Julian, he can explain everything.""Good girl." He pressed a kiss over my racing heart, and his voice turned cold and dangerous. "Julian. I will find him, just not tonight."Something in that registered. "You know Julian?""Tonight is our wedding night, Evie. I won't waste it on people who don't matter." His arm circled my waist, and his mouth traveled slowly along my collarbon
Evelyn's Point of View The room was covered in red paper double-happiness characters. I sat quietly at the edge of the bed, waiting for my husband to lift my veil and share the nuptial cup with me.The sound of leather shoes on the floor made my heart flutter with nerves. The veil rose on the tip of a slender gold rod, and the world brightened. I kept my eyes lowered, too shy to look up.An exquisite little cup was placed in my hand, and I took it.We linked arms to drink, and the closeness filled the air with a thread of intimacy. It gave me a courage I hadn't expected. I lifted my head and said shyly, "Jul..."The word died in my throat.I shot to my feet. The cup slipped from my fingers and hit the floor with a clang. "You... who are you?""Your husband," he said, his voice low."Wait. There's been a mistake." I backed away, step after step. The man in front of me had a face so beautiful it stole my breath. His features looked chiseled by a master's hand, with sharp brows, dark ey
