Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
Sarah looked conflicted as she checked our chat.

Gabriel took her phone from her and placed it on the table. "We haven't seen each other in years, Sarah. Since it's your birthday today, would you like to spend the night with me instead?"

"But… Alex and I are already married," she replied hesitantly.

He grabbed her shoulders and exclaimed, "But you don't love him! Aren't you in love with me? Have you perhaps fallen in love with Alex while I was gone?"

I knew that she didn't love me, but I still allowed myself to hope. Maybe she hesitated because she actually cared about me after all.

Unfortunately, her response left me thoroughly disappointed.

"Of course not!" she replied without a shred of hesitation. "I'm just afraid that it'd harm your reputation if someone were to find out about it."

She added, "Alex could never compare to you. In my eyes, he doesn't even hold a candle to you!"

As it turned out, she was only concerned that Gabriel would be labeled as a homewrecker—she didn't care about my feelings at all.

"I'm not worried about that, Sarah. I just want to be with you," declared Gabriel.

Subsequently, he wrapped his hand around the back of her neck and feverishly pulled her in for a kiss. His free hand then began to wander up her thigh. As the atmosphere in the room grew more and more intimate, the pair proceeded to make their way toward the bedroom.

I was heartbroken and devastated. Sarah's derisive comments, combined with the noises I was now hearing behind me, left me so overwhelmed that I was struggling to breathe.

I tried to flee the room, but I was bound to Sarah's side. I couldn't leave, no matter how hard I tried, so I was forced to listen to what was happening in the background for the rest of the night. Eventually, I became numb to everything that was going on.

The following morning, Sarah reluctantly left Gabriel's home and headed to work.

When she stepped out of the house, she checked her phone and realized that I hadn't called or texted her since last night. Furious, she spat, "You're not even concerned that I was out the entire night? Serves you right that I slept with someone else!"

I was dead; I wasn't going to bother her ever again. Wasn't this what she'd wanted all along?

Once she got to the law firm, I noticed my mom leaning against the entrance of the office building.

My heart ached. I hastily rushed over to my mom and tried to help her up. But to my dismay, my hands went right through her shoulders.

Sarah, on the other hand, frowned at the sight of her.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" she asked in disdain.

Once my mom heard Sarah's voice, she shakily got to her feet.

Using her cane to guide her, she then made her way over to Sarah and said, "Yesterday, I couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen. Alex isn't picking up my calls, and no one answered the door when I dropped by your place. That's why I decided to wait for you at your workplace."

My eyes immediately welled up with tears. Was this what they called a mother's intuition? I couldn't believe my mom knew that something had gone awry.

"What?" Sarah shrieked. "Alex didn't go home last night? I can't believe he's cheating on me!"

Upon hearing Sarah's accusations, my mom immediately began to panic. She anxiously clutched Sarah's hand and explained, "Alex isn't that kind of guy, Sarah. I know him very well. I just assumed that no one was home because you went out together. Were you not with him last night?"

A flicker of guilt flashed across Sarah's face. Subsequently, she aggressively yanked her hand away from my mom and replied, "I was working last night. How am I supposed to know where your beloved son went? I bet he's fooling around with other women behind my back!"

After losing her balance, my blind mother accidentally tripped and fell down.

I was seething. I wanted to dash forward and slap Sarah across the face. She was the one who cheated on me last night, but she was trying to paint me as the guilty one instead. On top of that, she even pushed my mom and made her fall to the ground.

After Sarah was thrown into prison, she spent her days wandering around in a daze as she muttered "I'm sorry" over and over again. None of that was necessary to me anymore. I was already dead—there was no need for her to apologize to me any longer.Given how pampered she was, I'd assumed that she wouldn't be able to tolerate life in prison. To my surprise, she was extremely proactive and was willing to take on any work that was assigned to her. Due to her exemplary behavior, she managed to reduce her sentence by a year. Two years later, she was released from prison. At this point, I hadn't seen my mom in two whole years. I desperately wanted to know how she was doing. She was visually impaired. So, I didn't know who would be able to take care of her now that I was gone. After being released from prison, the first thing Sarah did was return home. After taking out our marriage certificate, she curled up in a corner and wept as she clutched the papers to her chest. "I'm sorry. T

Sarah screamed and looked toward Gabriel with a shocked expression. Gabriel, on the other hand, sheepishly averted his gaze.Initially, Gabriel was the only person who was being sued. However, once my mom found out that Sarah helped him cover up his tracks, she decided to sue them both. Thus, Sarah removed herself from the defense counsel's chair and took one of the seats reserved for defendants instead. She looked like she was still reeling from shock. It didn't seem like she'd come to terms with what had happened yet. With my help, my mom was able to point the authorities toward the location where the evidence was destroyed. By doing so, the police were able to retrieve my blood samples. On top of that, the police even managed to restore the destroyed dashcam and recover the footage from the accident. "This man killed my son, and my daughter-in-law still helped him hide the truth," my mom cried as she sobbed hysterically. "My son had been nothing but a loving husband to her thr

Sarah froze for a moment before she abruptly burst into laughter. "Alex put you up to this, didn't he? I'm impressed. I can't believe he'd fake his death just to lie to me," she said. She continued, "He cheated on me last night, didn't he? So what? Did he realize that he messed up and doesn't want to get a divorce? "He pulled this stunt to make me feel sorry for him, right? Well, you can tell him to save it! I'm going to divorce him no matter what!"The other end of the phone went silent. Then, one moment later, I heard my mom break into a pained sob. "You heartless bitch! My son is gone, and you're still dragging his name through the mud. My son has been nothing but good to you throughout your entire marriage. Do you have no empathy?"I felt my heart ache. I know how ghastly my body looked, so I assume my mom must've felt extremely grief-stricken when she saw it. I wanted nothing more than to return to my mom. I wanted to console her and tell her that I was still here. But

My mom grasped at the air and frantically searched for Sarah's hand. "No, there's no way. Alex isn't that kind of person. Something must've happened to him," my mom cried. "Call the police. Hurry up and call the police, Sarah," my mom begged desperately.I stared at my mother with tears running down my face. This was all my fault. If I hadn't married Sarah, my mom would still have a son.Sarah scoffed and replied, "Why do I need to call the cops if he's just fooling around with other women? You can go ahead and tell that son of yours that I'll be handing him our divorce papers soon!"My mom was generally an even-tempered person, but this time she was genuinely outraged. She leaned against her cane and shakily got to her feet. Then, she exclaimed, "Alright then. Since you won't lodge a police report, I'll do it myself!"She continued, "I've never seen such a heartless wife in my entire life. You don't even care if your husband is dead or alive! You're no daughter-in-law of mine

As I followed Sarah around, I watched as she personally cleaned the blood off Gabriel's car before destroying the dashcam footage. I couldn't help but smile bitterly. I'd never let Sarah lift a single finger in our home. In fact, I treated her like royalty and even hand-washed her laundry myself. Because of this, watching her do so much for Gabriel made me feel like an utter fool. After she destroyed the evidence, she even taught Gabriel how to give false testimony. She guaranteed that she'd be able to get him off the hook even if he were to become the prime suspect in the case.I desperately wanted to tell the police that Gabriel was the perpetrator. But I could only watch helplessly as the woman I loved helped my murderer cover his tracks.Once everything was cleaned up, Sarah patted Gabriel's hand reassuringly. "Everything's settled. If the police ever come knocking on your door, you just need to tell them exactly what I told you to say. I promise you'll be okay."Gabriel sta
