I walked out of Vivian Hart's office, returned to my desk, and submitted a request for every remaining day of vacation I had.

I'd decided I was done holding the company together, but that didn't mean I'd leave a mess behind. I put together a thorough handover: client updates, project risks, contact information for every account lead. I even included a note that Mr. Bennett at Halstead Group hated receiving calls during lunch.

Marcus Reed from HR spotted the email and came straight over.

"Adrian, you're really taking all that time off?"

"Yeah. Family stuff."

"Does Vivian know?"

I closed my laptop. "Time off goes through HR. I don't have to notify her separately."

Those were Vivian's own rules.

Three years earlier, when she introduced formal management procedures, she'd made a point of saying everyone had to follow the same process, including me. After the meeting, she'd pulled me aside.

"You don't need to tell me personally when you request leave anymore. I don't want anyone saying we're mixing marriage with business."

So I muted the work chats and went to the hospital.

Mom had just finished her IV treatment. When I entered, she was leaning over the side of her bed, trying to reach her water bottle. I hurried over and handed it to her.

Instead of smiling, she frowned.

"What are you doing here again? Don't you have work?"

"I took some vacation days. I'll stay with you for a while."

"I've got doctors and nurses. What good will you do sitting around here?" She waved me off, then asked, "Where's Viv?"

"She's busy. Couldn't get away."

I'd been saying that for six years.

During our first year starting the company, we couldn't leave it unattended. The second year was all about raising capital. In the third, we were launching a major product. Eventually, every department had its own manager, yet we still hadn't gone home for the holidays once.

Mom never complained. She just mailed care packages and homemade treats, along with the same reminder every time.

"Viv's building something important. Try to understand."

When I didn't respond, Mom studied me.

"Did you two have a fight?"

"No."

"You've always been like this. The bigger the problem, the less you'll say about it." She sighed. "Married people can work through disagreements. But one person can't always be the one giving in. And nobody gets to take another person's kindness for granted."

I stared at the silver hair around her temples.

Vivian's words came back to me: You're my husband. You should be willing to put up with a little unfairness.

My mother understood something Vivian apparently couldn't.

"I'm just tired, Mom," I admitted quietly.

For the first time in six years, I didn't make excuses for my wife.

My phone rang. Vivian.

I stepped into the hallway to answer.

"You're using all your vacation days?" she demanded.

"Yes."

"We have a meeting with Halstead this afternoon. Product development is waiting for you to approve their proposal, too."

"Everything's in the handover. Leo can sit in on the meeting."

A pause. "Are you still sulking about your bonus?"

"I'm at the hospital with Mom."

"There are medical professionals at the hospital. You can hire an aide if you need one. Come back for the meeting, then visit her tonight. You'll have time for both."

Her voice was calm, almost helpful, as though she'd worked out a perfectly reasonable schedule.

I used to admire her practicality. Now I understood that she simply considered my family less important than her company.

"We'll see."

"Adrian, you're a deputy director. You can't bring personal feelings into work."

"I'm taking approved vacation. Was there anything else?"

She hung up without answering.

"I accept your apology," I said.A small spark of hope appeared in Vivian's eyes."But we aren't getting married again."The hope vanished."I could try to win you back," she said. "You wouldn't have to give me an answer now.""Vivian, I believe you're truly sorry. Believing you doesn't mean I'm willing to start over.""There's no chance at all?""No."I didn't want to trap her with an ambiguous promise. And I had no intention of putting myself back in a position where I was waiting for her to change. After that, both companies' teams handled the acquisition.Westbridge decided to buy the business outright and fold it into its existing operations. When Grant reviewed the final agreement, he grinned."I hired you with a five-thousand-dollar advance. Now you're bringing me an entire company.""You're not buying it to solve my personal problems.""I know." He nodded. "If the business weren't worth buying, I wouldn't pay a cent."On the day the deal closed, the old company k

During the next thirty days, Vivian stopped using work as an excuse to contact me.Once, she visited Mom with nothing more than a simple bag of fruit. They talked for half an hour, and Mom didn't suggest we reconcile.Later, Mom told me Vivian genuinely regretted what she'd done."Are you sure you don't want to think it over?" Mom asked.I shook my head.Understanding someone's regret and trusting them again were two different things. On the thirtieth day, Vivian and I returned to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. Before we signed the last documents, the clerk confirmed that we were proceeding voluntarily.Vivian hesitated for several seconds."Yes," she finally said. "Voluntarily."When the final divorce decree was issued, she slipped off her wedding ring."Do you regret it?"I looked down at the papers in my hand."I'm sad. But I don't regret it."She nodded and didn't push any further.Five days after our marriage officially ended, the company held an emergency

That night, Mom asked about the divorce."Are you really sure?""I am.""Don't leave just because you're angry, and don't stay just because you feel sorry for her. Ask yourself one thing: can you still trust her?"I thought about it.Maybe my love for Vivian hadn't disappeared completely. But a marriage couldn't survive on memories of being in love. The next time the company and my family needed her at the same time, I had no idea which one she'd choose.More importantly, I wasn't willing to gamble on it again."No," I told Mom. "I can't."Three days later, my attorney filed the divorce petition.Vivian called the night she received the court notice."Do you really have to drag our marriage into court?""You refused to negotiate.""You won't give an inch?""I gave you six years."She stayed silent for a long time before hanging up.I watched the lights shining in windows across the city long into the night. I didn't feel victorious.I'd simply stopped waiting. The com

The wind outside the hospital was fierce.Vivian pulled her coat tighter and stood in silence for a long time before she spoke."I can transfer the five thousand today. I'll have your year-end bonus recalculated, too."I'll take back the car. Caleb's reward will be reviewed.""And then?""You leave Westbridge. Come back to the company. Same job, same authority."I looked at her. "If Halstead hadn't paused its renewal, would you be standing here?""We're talking about our marriage.""Everything you've offered is about the business."She pressed her lips together.I knew that expression. Whenever Vivian didn't want to admit she was wrong, she'd go quiet until she found another argument.Sure enough, she soon said, "Husbands and wives shouldn't keep score like this. You helped when the company needed money. When you need help, I can make it up to you. One failure to communicate shouldn't end a marriage.""When the company needed cash, we were married, so I was supposed to hand

"A divorce agreement," I repeated."Quitting your job wasn't enough? Now you want a divorce, too?" Vivian's voice shot up."Our professional relationship is over. There's no reason to keep dragging out our marriage."I could hear her breathing change."Adrian, you're throwing away six years over one disagreement at work?"I said nothing.I'd spent years believing that six years together couldn't possibly be undone by one argument. That belief was why I'd kept making excuses for her.But our marriage hadn't been worn down by one five-thousand-dollar dispute. It had been worn down by countless moments when she assumed I would be the one to give in.In the early days, we'd lived in a rental with a leaking roof. The night the company landed its first contract, Vivian came home with two cans of beer. She'd promised that when we had money, we'd throw the kind of wedding celebration neither of us had been able to afford.Eventually, we had the money. We even had the time. Somehow, n

Vivian's grip tightened around her phone."That's impossible. What did Westbridge offer him?"She immediately assumed Grant must have put an astronomical package on the table. If this was about salary and position, she could still negotiate."I don't know his regular compensation," Mr. Bennett replied. "But Grant mentioned that Adrian asked for only one extra thing.""What?""A five-thousand-dollar advance."Vivian went still."Five thousand?""That's right. Grant thought he meant fifty thousand at first. Adrian said he just needed five thousand urgently."Mr. Bennett kept talking, but his words faded into a blur.Vivian remembered my phone call from the hospital. I'd told her Mom's treatment would cost another five thousand dollars and asked for a salary advance. She'd refused. She'd said cash was tight and that making an exception for her husband would undermine company policy. On that same day, she'd approved Caleb's $5,000 bonus. Later she'd signed off on a company car
