Chapter 2

Author: Cherry Lane
"Stephie, Nicky gave up on the company just to take care of you. If you don't appreciate him for that, fine. But how could you actually hit him?" Rosalind demanded.

After our daughter died, Nicholas had indeed taken care of me down to the smallest detail.

I hated that I hadn't been the one to die that day. I kept wanting to kill myself to atone for my daughter's death, and I couldn't even spare a thought for my sick mother.

Nicholas had taken care of me while arranging my mother's hospital stay. I had once felt indebted to him. Now, I only found him hateful and deceitful.

I stared at the kiss mark on Rosalind's neck and let out a bitter laugh. "What exactly am I supposed to appreciate him for? For getting my daughter killed, then somehow having no time for work but plenty of time to sleep with you and get you pregnant with his bastard?"

The moment I finished speaking, Nicholas slapped me hard across the face.

My cheek burned, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

Nicholas' voice shook with fury. "Stephanie Tucker, you're completely and hopelessly out of your mind. Rosie is the sister you've doted on since she was a child."

Sister?

I looked at Rosalind, pale as she hid behind him.

I hated myself for being so blind. If I had seen through her sooner and known she was the woman Nicholas had kept on the side, I never would have remarried him.

Three years earlier, I had discovered that Nicholas was having an affair. But no matter how hard I searched, I couldn't find out who the other woman was.

Nicholas protected her so carefully that I couldn't uncover a single clue. The endless fights that followed eventually wore me down.

I became sensitive and quick to anger. Rosalind was the one who urged me, "Stephie, don't waste your life on a man who doesn't love you."

I didn't want to become a stranger to myself, so I took my daughter and insisted on divorcing Nicholas.

Not long afterward, Nicholas came looking for me. He swore he had cut the woman off completely. Then he waited outside my mother's building for three days and three nights without eating or drinking.

Our daughter cried endlessly for her father and begged me to let him come back. For her sake, I decided to give Nicholas one more chance.

That day, he held both of us in his arms and wept with joy. "Stephie, Sally, I'll make it up to both of you from now on. I'll give you every good thing in the world."

His vow had sounded so sincere. I never imagined it was all a lie.

My tears finally broke loose. I had been such a fool. The two people I trusted most had deceived me all along.

If I hadn't remarried Nicholas, our daughter would still be alive.

Our daughter's small, pale face flashed before my eyes.

Hatred overwhelmed my reason. I snatched the cup from the coffee table and hurled it at Rosalind. "I won't divorce him this time. You can spend the rest of your life as his mistress."

Nicholas stepped in front of Rosalind and stared at me with undisguised disgust. "I'm the one who did wrong. What right do you have to take it out on Rosie?

"She only wanted to share the joy of her pregnancy with you. She even planned to register the child under your name so you could move past your grief. What more do you want?"

The sight of him shielding Rosalind as he screamed at me shattered what little restraint I had left. I smashed everything within reach like a madwoman.

Nicholas watched me with cold eyes. Without another word, he wrapped his arms around Rosalind and led her away.

By the time I exhausted myself and sank to the floor, Rosalind had sent me another photo. She wore a dazzling diamond ring and nestled against Nicholas, her face radiant with happiness.

Rosalind: [Stephie, I wish you could've come to the auction with us. Nicky would've bought you 20,000,000 dollars' worth of jewelry too.]

I gripped my phone as my entire body shook.

I had lost my daughter and was living a life worse than death. What right did they have to be happy?

I ignored the blood from the shards of glass embedded in my foot and took screenshots of the photo and every message Rosalind had sent me.

Then I organized everything Nicholas had confessed into a post and published it online.

The post had barely begun to cause an uproar when Nicholas came storming toward me, his face livid.

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 9

After I arrived in the new city, I opened a coffee shop. The shop sat near a scenic tourist area and had plenty of tables inside.Tourists often stopped in to rest, and some felt awkward about taking up a table without buying anything, so they would order a cup of coffee. As a result, business was decent.Nicholas found me three months later. I had changed my name, so it had taken him a long time to track me down. When I saw him again, he looked worn down, and several strands of his hair had turned gray.A flicker of surprise passed through me. He used to care about his appearance more than anything and had always been meticulous, no matter the occasion. The moment he saw me, emotion overwhelmed him. "Stephie, I finally found you."I looked at him as if he were a stranger. "Nicholas, stay away from me."My coldness left him at a loss, but he quickly shook his head. "No, Stephie, I won't leave you. We're not divorced yet. We're still married. Sooner or later, you'll have to come

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 8

Nicholas suddenly clamped a hand around Rosalind's throat, cutting off whatever she had been about to say. "Is toying with me fun for you?"Rosalind's face reddened under his grip. She clawed at his hand with all her strength, but he did not budge."Nic... Nicky, what are you talking about?" She saw the flash of killing intent in his eyes, and terror filled hers. "The... The baby, Nicky. You've already lost two children. Do you want to lose a third?"At the word "children," Nicholas remembered the two children from his dream, and the strength suddenly drained from his grip.Rosalind slumped sideways onto the couch. She clutched her throat and coughed uncontrollably. She already understood why Nicholas hated her, but she did not dare make a sound.Nicholas had no intention of letting her off. "Rosalind, I really was fooled by nothing more than your pretty face. Even a dog would know to be grateful after someone raised it for 20 years."Yet not only were you ungrateful, but you als

After Nicholas hung up, his legs still felt weak beneath him. He looked nothing like the man who had been shouting at the caregiver only moments earlier."My mother-in-law died, and you didn't tell me?!"The caregiver had stammered out an explanation. "Miss Sommers told me not to. She said you were busy with work and that I should just tell your wife about anything concerning Mrs. Tucker."Nicholas suddenly remembered the day Stephanie had broken down at home. She had begged him to believe her, telling him that her mother was critically ill and that she needed to go to the hospital. But he had refused to believe her. He had even accused her of putting on an act and being a drama queen. Even when she had knelt before Rosalind in desperation, he still had not believed her.It turned out that everything Stephanie had said was true. She had not lied at all. His own stubbornness had kept her from seeing her mother one last time.Nicholas sank to the floor, despair plain in his eyes.

Nicholas woke to the harsh glare of the morning sun stabbing at his eyes.Sleep had brought him no rest. In his dreams, he kept seeing his daughter come to find him with a little boy by the hand.Somehow, he knew the boy was his child too. Both children were crying as they asked him, "Daddy, why didn't you protect us? Daddy, why did you hurt Mommy?"He had truly loved his daughter with all his heart. The sight of her sweet little face crumpled with tears made his heart feel as though someone had wrung it tight. In the dream, he apologized to her over and over, then apologized to the little boy as well.He had never meant for any of this to happen. If he could turn back time, he would protect them properly. He would make sure they were born safely and grew up healthy. But no matter what he said, both children continued to cry. In the end, a blinding light struck him full in the eyes, and he jolted awake.Rosalind was still curled around his waist, sound asleep. For the past few

Nicholas's scream seemed to come from somewhere far away, from beyond the world itself. "Stephanie!"Then I sank into endless darkness. When I opened my eyes again, Nicholas was sitting beside my hospital bed, his eyes bloodshot. The moment he saw that I was awake, he grabbed my hand. "Stephie, does it hurt anywhere?"I looked at him and pulled my hand free.A dull ache still lingered in my lower abdomen. I remembered his kick and the look on his face right before I passed out.I already understood what had happened. At that moment, a nurse walked in, and she could not hide the pity in her eyes. "You were 14 weeks pregnant. You really didn't feel anything at all?"I shook my head numbly. After our daughter died, I had sunk into a despair I couldn't pull myself out of. I barely ate or drank. Even if my body had changed, I hadn't had the presence of mind to notice. At 14 weeks, the baby would have already taken shape. But I had been taking medication the entire time. Even if I

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 4

"Rosalind, she's the mother who raised you. What did you do to her?" I demanded.Rosalind watched me fall apart and smiled with satisfaction. "I told her everything. I told her I'm pregnant with Nicky's child and told her the truth about Sally's death."I also told her that Nicky didn't miss Sally's burial because he couldn't bear the pain of losing his daughter. He missed it because he was with me, looking for comfort."She couldn't take it. She had a heart attack right there on the spot."I stared at her, unable to believe what I was hearing. "Why? My mother was so good to you. Wasn't destroying my family enough? Why couldn't you leave my mother out of this?"I no longer cared what Nicholas had done. All I could think about was how unfairly my mother had been treated. My furious accusations only made Rosalind bolder. "Good to me? She knew perfectly well that I had feelings for Nicky, yet she still pushed me into blind dates."If she really cared about me, she should have convi
