Chapter 3

Penulis: Cherry Lane
Nicholas grabbed my bandaged wrist, his eyes blazing with enough fury to tear me apart. "Stephanie, how long are you going to keep this up before you're satisfied? Our daughter is already gone. Do you want to get your sister killed too?

"Because of your recklessness, Rosie cried and threatened to jump off a building to atone for what she did to you. She's pregnant. How can you be so cold-blooded?"

He knew I feared pain more than anything. Whenever he changed my dressing, he took great care not to hurt me.

But Rosalind was the only thing on his mind now. He didn't even notice that his tight grip was pressing directly into my wound.

Pain sent a cold sweat down my back, yet I still let out a mocking laugh. "I don't have a sister. And an ungrateful wretch like her won't die that easily!"

Rosalind was the daughter of my mother's best friend. After both her parents died, my mother took her in and raised her alongside me, treating us exactly the same.

My mother's influence had led me to genuinely care for Rosalind as my own sister. I never imagined she would be the one to stab me in the back the hardest.

The raw hatred in my eyes startled Nicholas.

He froze for a moment before gripping my chin hard. "You want to lose your mind? Fine. I'll lose mine right along with you. If you won't accept Rosie's child, then have one of your own."

As soon as the words left his mouth, he bit down hard on my lip. He ignored my struggles and pinned me beneath him.

The more I resisted, the more force he used to restrain me.

Nicholas held me down, his voice thick with pain. "Stephie, if we have another child, you won't lose your mind anymore, and you won't hurt Rosie again either."

Even as he forced himself on me, Rosalind was the reason behind it.

My heart had already shattered, but now he ground the pieces into dust.

All the strength drained from my body. He took what he wanted from me as though I were nothing more than a broken doll.

Only once my entire body was covered in marks did Nicholas finally pull back, satisfied.

Before he left, he said hoarsely, "I've already taken care of everything online. Don't do anything else to upset me."

The pain in my lower abdomen left me no room to dwell on his warning. His mind was so consumed with Rosalind that he hadn't even noticed anything was wrong with me.

Fortunately, the sharp pain in my abdomen eased after a while.

I forced myself out of bed, but the moment I opened the door, I found Rosalind standing outside.

Her smile stiffened as soon as she saw the red marks on my neck. Then she let out a cold laugh. "Stephie, what you posted online got me cyberbullied. Do you know what Nicky did to fix it?"

Before she could say anything more, my phone suddenly rang.

I answered, and the frantic voice of my mother's caregiver came through. "Mrs. Halston, something's wrong. Your mother saw the news online, including your private photos. She fainted from the shock and was rushed to the emergency room. Please hurry over!"

Only then did I learn what Nicholas had done. He had personally come forward and claimed that I was mentally unstable and had used AI to fake the photos and messages because I couldn't cope with the grief of losing my daughter.

At the same time, he had released all my medical records. To prove that I really was sick, he had even used my own account to post a set of private photos.

Even with the sensitive areas blurred out, I recognized at a glance that the photos had been taken just an hour earlier.

For Rosalind's sake, there was no limit to how far he would go to hurt me.

Bitterness and hatred surged through me, but I had no patience left to deal with Rosalind.

My mother was still in the emergency room. I had already lost my daughter. I couldn't lose her too.

But just as I turned to leave, Rosalind blocked my way. "Stephie, you're not well. Nicky won't let you go out alone. Besides, even if you rushed over now, I'm afraid you wouldn't make it in time to see Mom one last time."

I stared at her faint smile, and a chill shot down my spine.

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 9

After I arrived in the new city, I opened a coffee shop. The shop sat near a scenic tourist area and had plenty of tables inside.Tourists often stopped in to rest, and some felt awkward about taking up a table without buying anything, so they would order a cup of coffee. As a result, business was decent.Nicholas found me three months later. I had changed my name, so it had taken him a long time to track me down. When I saw him again, he looked worn down, and several strands of his hair had turned gray.A flicker of surprise passed through me. He used to care about his appearance more than anything and had always been meticulous, no matter the occasion. The moment he saw me, emotion overwhelmed him. "Stephie, I finally found you."I looked at him as if he were a stranger. "Nicholas, stay away from me."My coldness left him at a loss, but he quickly shook his head. "No, Stephie, I won't leave you. We're not divorced yet. We're still married. Sooner or later, you'll have to come

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 8

Nicholas suddenly clamped a hand around Rosalind's throat, cutting off whatever she had been about to say. "Is toying with me fun for you?"Rosalind's face reddened under his grip. She clawed at his hand with all her strength, but he did not budge."Nic... Nicky, what are you talking about?" She saw the flash of killing intent in his eyes, and terror filled hers. "The... The baby, Nicky. You've already lost two children. Do you want to lose a third?"At the word "children," Nicholas remembered the two children from his dream, and the strength suddenly drained from his grip.Rosalind slumped sideways onto the couch. She clutched her throat and coughed uncontrollably. She already understood why Nicholas hated her, but she did not dare make a sound.Nicholas had no intention of letting her off. "Rosalind, I really was fooled by nothing more than your pretty face. Even a dog would know to be grateful after someone raised it for 20 years."Yet not only were you ungrateful, but you als

After Nicholas hung up, his legs still felt weak beneath him. He looked nothing like the man who had been shouting at the caregiver only moments earlier."My mother-in-law died, and you didn't tell me?!"The caregiver had stammered out an explanation. "Miss Sommers told me not to. She said you were busy with work and that I should just tell your wife about anything concerning Mrs. Tucker."Nicholas suddenly remembered the day Stephanie had broken down at home. She had begged him to believe her, telling him that her mother was critically ill and that she needed to go to the hospital. But he had refused to believe her. He had even accused her of putting on an act and being a drama queen. Even when she had knelt before Rosalind in desperation, he still had not believed her.It turned out that everything Stephanie had said was true. She had not lied at all. His own stubbornness had kept her from seeing her mother one last time.Nicholas sank to the floor, despair plain in his eyes.

Nicholas woke to the harsh glare of the morning sun stabbing at his eyes.Sleep had brought him no rest. In his dreams, he kept seeing his daughter come to find him with a little boy by the hand.Somehow, he knew the boy was his child too. Both children were crying as they asked him, "Daddy, why didn't you protect us? Daddy, why did you hurt Mommy?"He had truly loved his daughter with all his heart. The sight of her sweet little face crumpled with tears made his heart feel as though someone had wrung it tight. In the dream, he apologized to her over and over, then apologized to the little boy as well.He had never meant for any of this to happen. If he could turn back time, he would protect them properly. He would make sure they were born safely and grew up healthy. But no matter what he said, both children continued to cry. In the end, a blinding light struck him full in the eyes, and he jolted awake.Rosalind was still curled around his waist, sound asleep. For the past few

Nicholas's scream seemed to come from somewhere far away, from beyond the world itself. "Stephanie!"Then I sank into endless darkness. When I opened my eyes again, Nicholas was sitting beside my hospital bed, his eyes bloodshot. The moment he saw that I was awake, he grabbed my hand. "Stephie, does it hurt anywhere?"I looked at him and pulled my hand free.A dull ache still lingered in my lower abdomen. I remembered his kick and the look on his face right before I passed out.I already understood what had happened. At that moment, a nurse walked in, and she could not hide the pity in her eyes. "You were 14 weeks pregnant. You really didn't feel anything at all?"I shook my head numbly. After our daughter died, I had sunk into a despair I couldn't pull myself out of. I barely ate or drank. Even if my body had changed, I hadn't had the presence of mind to notice. At 14 weeks, the baby would have already taken shape. But I had been taking medication the entire time. Even if I

  • The Husband Who Drugged Me   Chapter 4

"Rosalind, she's the mother who raised you. What did you do to her?" I demanded.Rosalind watched me fall apart and smiled with satisfaction. "I told her everything. I told her I'm pregnant with Nicky's child and told her the truth about Sally's death."I also told her that Nicky didn't miss Sally's burial because he couldn't bear the pain of losing his daughter. He missed it because he was with me, looking for comfort."She couldn't take it. She had a heart attack right there on the spot."I stared at her, unable to believe what I was hearing. "Why? My mother was so good to you. Wasn't destroying my family enough? Why couldn't you leave my mother out of this?"I no longer cared what Nicholas had done. All I could think about was how unfairly my mother had been treated. My furious accusations only made Rosalind bolder. "Good to me? She knew perfectly well that I had feelings for Nicky, yet she still pushed me into blind dates."If she really cared about me, she should have convi
