Margot POV

Everything moved too damn fast.

Gerald Hargrave’s lawyer found me first.

Contracts. Signatures.

A legal acknowledgment that made us father and daughter on paper.

I refused to take his last name.

He didn’t push. The same man who’d walked out on my mother years ago now needed me to claim him.

The irony sat thick and bitter on my tongue, but the money made it easier to swallow.

Then the check arrived.

A string of zeros that hit harder than any perfect data set I’d ever run.

My hands actually shook when I looked at it.

Pay off every debt.

That left a little over two million.

Not enough for a house in cash, but more than enough for a solid down payment.

Ellen had insurance and a pension.

My salary would cover the rest: treatment, mortgage, groceries.

For the first time in years, the weight on my chest eased.

The future didn’t feel like it was actively trying to bury me.

I still did not know how to explain the money to Ellen.

Regarding the marriage, I would keep it a secret for as long as possible.

The next morning I took another half-day.

Rhett Vanderbilt and I showed up at the Pack Alliance Council’s marriage office before the doors officially opened, ducking any chance of press.

Even someone with his money still had to appear in person.

I could feel the low thrum of irritation rolling off him while we signed, stamped, and pressed our palms to the registration form.

Two bright red handprints side by side.

When it was done, he left without another word.

I stood there, holding the certificate, staring at those prints.

In all the years of debt, I’d never let myself imagine marrying anyone.

I couldn’t drag someone else down with me.

Rhett had been the secret piece of candy I kept in my pocket, something sweet to taste when the days got too dark.

 A placebo. Nothing more.

Except he wasn’t.

He’d pulled me out of the dark twice.

First, when the silver poisoning hit, every Alpha in the room started losing control.

Only Rhett’s scent—dark, controlled, impossibly steady—had cut through the chaos and kept me from becoming something unspeakable.

Second time he’d dropped out of nowhere and erased a debt that should have buried me for good.

I was a scientist. I didn’t believe in fate.

Standing there with that certificate in my hands, Lisa stirred anyway, quiet and uncertain, like she was waiting for something.

The lawyer’s voice pulled me back.

He took the papers, slid them into a slim folder, then into his briefcase.

“I’ll keep these secure. There’s a car waiting to take you to Alpha Vanderbilt’s residence.”

I checked my watch.

“I only took a half-day.”

He gave a polite, practiced smile.

“You’re Alpha Vanderbilt’s wife now. A few extra hours won’t be an issue. I’ll ride with you.”

The word wife scraped against something raw in my chest.

The whole thing still felt like someone else’s life.

The car headed south.

I watched the city thin out until we rolled into a gated villa district.

I pulled up the map on my phone.

Far from the lab. No subway nearby.

The lawyer glanced at the screen.

“Don’t worry. This car is yours now. Driver included.”

I shook my head.

“That will not work. I can’t explain a car like this to my coworkers. It kills the low profile we’re supposed to keep.”

“You can work something out with the household staff.”

“Fine.”

We pulled into the underground garage.

A silver-haired man waited by the elevator, posture perfect, expression unreadable.

“Mrs. Vanderbilt. I’m Henry, the butler. Welcome home.”

“Hello.” I felt the cool wall of politeness for what it was.

He wasn’t welcoming me. He was doing his job.

After the lawyer left, Henry gave me the tour.

Every room, every rule, every invisible line.

Second floor, south side, my suite.

The third floor was Alpha’s private territory; do not go up without permission.

I could eat in the dining room or in my room; if Henry suggested the room, it meant Rhett wanted space.

The gym and pool in the basement were free whenever the Alpha wasn’t using them.

I felt less like a new wife and more like a temporary guest being shown the amenities of a costly hotel.

A hotel I could never afford and wouldn’t be staying in long.

My suite was easily the size of a small one-bedroom apartment.

Full bath, walk-in closet, everything already stocked.

I could live here without ever stepping outside if I wanted to. Perfect.

Henry stood in the doorway.

“If the sheets aren’t soft enough, the toiletries aren’t your preferred brand, and the coffee isn’t right, just say the word.”

Margot POVShe was right. I didn’t have the nerve.Maybe that was a good thing. I spent the entire subway ride home telling myself I wasn't concerned with the gossip. Then I opened X. Apparently, I cared.I searched for the video. The biggest posts were already gone. Some accounts had deleted their screenshots. Others had removed the original clip. The conversation was still there, but the footage itself was disappearing fast.Vanderbilt Dominion’s PR team had been very busy.By the time I got home, it was already dinnertime. Rhett was home early. That seldom happened. I walked into the dining room and found him already changed into his lounge clothes, sitting at the table. He looked up.His expression was completely normal. “You’re back.” “Yeah.” “Come and eat.”

Margot POVNora suddenly leaned across the table.“This is Rhett Vanderbilt we’re talking about.”Her eyes practically sparkled.“The Vanderbilt heir.” I already knew where this was going.“Don’t.” She ignored me.“What does it feel like to get carried by the most powerful Alpha in the city?” I gave her a flat look. She grinned. I had no doubt the leaked footage was connected to Hunter somehow. The problem was that the gossip wasn’t nearly as interesting as people wanted it to be.Hunter Vale’s wife, Grace Baker, was one of the biggest rising stars in the country. She was also a Beta. People had been talking about their marriage from the beginning. A top-tier Alpha marrying a Beta made people uncomfortable.Grace didn’t have a scent. She couldn’t be marked. To people who believed an alpha's partner should be chosen by biology, their marriage made no sense. That was precisely why the paparazzi kept watching them. They wanted cracks: a fight, a cheating rumor, anything they

Margot POVThe house was officially mine. I signed the purchase agreement that morning, finished the mortgage paperwork, and sat through closing with the real estate agent until every document was done. Then they handed me the keys.I curled my fingers around them and stood there for a moment. I had a place of my own. I hadn’t bought the biggest house I could afford.I chose the lowest monthly payment that still made sense. My job was stable, and with my credentials, I knew I could find another position if the worst ever happened. But I’d learned not to bet my entire life on things going well.I’d already seen how quickly everything could disappear. So I wanted room to breathe: a manageable mortgage, money left over for groceries, utilities, medical bills, and the unexpected expenses that always seemed to show up at the worst possible time. And enough left in savings that one bad month wouldn’t destroy me.That mattered more than having a bigger house. I wanted to get everyth

Margot POVThat selfish woman had taken everything. She’d drained our savings, emptied the accounts, and offered the rest of the family’s assets as collateral for her boyfriend’s debts before vanishing without a word.Almost overnight we went from comfortable to drowning.Grandpa took it the hardest. Already older, already carrying years of quiet strain, he watched the life he’d spent decades building disappear, and something inside him simply gave way.He grew sick. Less than six months later, he was gone.Ellen had spent most of her life living without fear of the next bill. Now she was moving into a cheap apartment, counting every dollar: rent, groceries, medical bills, and utilities, while everything settled onto my shoulders.I was barely old enough to grasp how quickly money vanished each month, yet one truth burned clear: there was never enough.Without my professor’s quiet help, I don’t know how we would have survived those years. I hated remembering that time, not because po

Margot POVI had always considered myself a reasonably well-mannered person.Which was probably the only thing stopping me from telling Arian exactly what I thought of him.I swallowed the curse that was already on the tip of my tongue.“I already told you. Go find someone in your weight class. Why lower yourself just to entertain yourself at my expense?”Arian gave a small shrug.“We're not at the point where we can go at each other head-on yet. All's fair in war, right? Besides, what do you expect? He was born eight months before me.”“Just eight months. And somehow, when he was born, the family stars aligned. By the time I came along, apparently it was more like a blessing in disguise.”“Your family drama has nothing to do with me. Aren't you worried I'll tell Rhett Vanderbilt you're talking to me about this?”Arian smiled. &ldquo

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 32

Margot POVBy morning, I was exhausted.I yawned so hard on my way into the lab that one intern gave me a concerned look.“Long night?”I nearly walked into the equipment cabinet.I had almost been late to work.Rhett had only come to my room once.Apparently, that was more than enough to destroy my ability to function before nine in the morning.I sat down with a stack of data and forced my brain back into work mode.I was halfway through checking a set of results when I heard voices outside the lab.I glanced toward the glass wall. A group was moving down the hall. People from the research institute.Several executives from the Vanderbilt Group. And then I saw him. Arian.I knew exactly why he was here. The group was touring one of the chemical research labs connected to the corporation's business operations. He had no reason to come into mine. And I would rather not see him. Twice was already too many. The first time, he had challenged me in front of everyone. The second time, he'd
