Margot POV

“Everything’s fine. Thank you.” I smiled and looked into his emotionless eyes.

“Alpha mentioned you still work full time. About the car,”

“I don’t need it. Most nights I’ll stay at my apartment near the lab. Subway and the occasional rideshare are enough.”

I knew exactly how unwelcome a stranger would be in this house.

No point in making myself more of a problem than I already was.

Henry’s brow lifted a fraction.

“Very well. Any dietary preferences?”

“None. Whatever’s easy.”

“Are you certain there’s nothing you need?”

“Not right now. I’ll let you know if something comes up.”

“I'll walk you out,” he bowed and gestured for me to follow.

We reached the foyer just as Rhett came through the front door.

He stopped short when he saw me, a flicker of pure confusion crossing his face before the mask slid back into place.

His scent hit me a second later: dark cedar, clean rain, and that unmistakable undercurrent of power that made my wolf go still and low to the ground.

“Alpha.” Henry stepped forward immediately. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“Left too early this morning. Decided to rest for a bit since I was already close.”

Rhett shrugged out of his suit jacket and handed it over, then tugged at his tie.

The movement pulled the fabric away from his throat, exposing the powerful line of his Adam’s apple as it shifted.

His eyes stayed on me the entire time, cool and assessing.

“Alpha Vanderbilt.” I gave a small nod and looked down.

Even the simple motion of him loosening his tie sent a stupid, traitorous flutter through my chest. My pulse kicked hard enough that I felt it in my throat.

“Settling in all right?” he asked, casually.

“Yes. Everything’s fine.”

“If you need anything, tell Henry.”

“I will. Thank you. I’m heading back to the lab. I’ll keep staying at my apartment near work so I don’t get in your way.”

Rhett’s gaze sharpened. The air between us thickened.

“Are you planning to live in the apartment?”

“Yeah, I,”

“We’re married. You live here.”

He handed the tie to Henry and walked toward the living room.

“Tea.”

I hesitated, then followed, stopping a few feet from the sofa like an employee waiting for instructions.

Which, technically, I still was.

My wolf paced restlessly under my skin, ears flat, unsettled by the quiet command in his voice.

Henry set the tea down and retreated to the edge of the room.

Rhett took a slow sip, then leaned back into the leather, phone already in hand.

His scent wrapped around me, controlled, heavy, impossible to ignore.

“This is a business arrangement,” he said without looking up.

“But certain appearances still matter. You may not understand why. You only need to follow through. Can you do that?”

The quiet weight of his Alpha presence pressed against my skin even though he still hadn’t met my eyes.

My wolf dropped lower, submitting without a fight.

“Yes.”

“Is the house the problem, or is it something else?”

“The house is perfect. I just don’t want to impose.”

“It’s a large house. I trust you know how to stay out of the way.”

His fingers paused on the screen.

He finally glanced up. The look was mild. The impact wasn’t.

“Or are you worried I’ll expect you to perform certain… wifely duties?”

Heat flooded my face so fast it almost hurt.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

A thin, sharp spike of my scent leaked out before I could lock it down, embarrassment and something softer I would rather not name.

I flicked a brief glance at Henry.

The butler stared at nothing, his face blank as stone.

I kept my eyes on the floor. No appropriate answer came.

My fingers curled against my thighs, nails biting into the fabric of my pants like claws trying to push through.

“Relax,” Rhett said, voice still mild.

“I have no interest in anything beyond the terms of the contract. You’re free to live here without concern.”

Every word was polished.

Every word landed like a quiet slap.

I remembered the clause in black and white: no unauthorized attempt to conceive the Vanderbilt heir. A man like Rhett had people lining up for the chance.

He’d already made an example of three employees in his first year just to kill the rumors.

That I might be the one he needed protection from was almost funny, except it wasn’t funny at all.

I had never expected him to touch me.

 I wasn’t stupid.

Hearing the soft, civilized dismissal from the one person whose opinion actually mattered still hollowed me out. Lisa curled tight and small inside my chest, tail tucked, scent thinning with the sharp edge of humiliation I couldn’t quite hide.

The cedar-and-rain of his presence stayed wrapped around me anyway, steady, indifferent, and completely unreachable.

Margot POVShe was right. I didn’t have the nerve.Maybe that was a good thing. I spent the entire subway ride home telling myself I wasn't concerned with the gossip. Then I opened X. Apparently, I cared.I searched for the video. The biggest posts were already gone. Some accounts had deleted their screenshots. Others had removed the original clip. The conversation was still there, but the footage itself was disappearing fast.Vanderbilt Dominion’s PR team had been very busy.By the time I got home, it was already dinnertime. Rhett was home early. That seldom happened. I walked into the dining room and found him already changed into his lounge clothes, sitting at the table. He looked up.His expression was completely normal. “You’re back.” “Yeah.” “Come and eat.”

Margot POVNora suddenly leaned across the table.“This is Rhett Vanderbilt we’re talking about.”Her eyes practically sparkled.“The Vanderbilt heir.” I already knew where this was going.“Don’t.” She ignored me.“What does it feel like to get carried by the most powerful Alpha in the city?” I gave her a flat look. She grinned. I had no doubt the leaked footage was connected to Hunter somehow. The problem was that the gossip wasn’t nearly as interesting as people wanted it to be.Hunter Vale’s wife, Grace Baker, was one of the biggest rising stars in the country. She was also a Beta. People had been talking about their marriage from the beginning. A top-tier Alpha marrying a Beta made people uncomfortable.Grace didn’t have a scent. She couldn’t be marked. To people who believed an alpha's partner should be chosen by biology, their marriage made no sense. That was precisely why the paparazzi kept watching them. They wanted cracks: a fight, a cheating rumor, anything they

Margot POVThe house was officially mine. I signed the purchase agreement that morning, finished the mortgage paperwork, and sat through closing with the real estate agent until every document was done. Then they handed me the keys.I curled my fingers around them and stood there for a moment. I had a place of my own. I hadn’t bought the biggest house I could afford.I chose the lowest monthly payment that still made sense. My job was stable, and with my credentials, I knew I could find another position if the worst ever happened. But I’d learned not to bet my entire life on things going well.I’d already seen how quickly everything could disappear. So I wanted room to breathe: a manageable mortgage, money left over for groceries, utilities, medical bills, and the unexpected expenses that always seemed to show up at the worst possible time. And enough left in savings that one bad month wouldn’t destroy me.That mattered more than having a bigger house. I wanted to get everyth

Margot POVThat selfish woman had taken everything. She’d drained our savings, emptied the accounts, and offered the rest of the family’s assets as collateral for her boyfriend’s debts before vanishing without a word.Almost overnight we went from comfortable to drowning.Grandpa took it the hardest. Already older, already carrying years of quiet strain, he watched the life he’d spent decades building disappear, and something inside him simply gave way.He grew sick. Less than six months later, he was gone.Ellen had spent most of her life living without fear of the next bill. Now she was moving into a cheap apartment, counting every dollar: rent, groceries, medical bills, and utilities, while everything settled onto my shoulders.I was barely old enough to grasp how quickly money vanished each month, yet one truth burned clear: there was never enough.Without my professor’s quiet help, I don’t know how we would have survived those years. I hated remembering that time, not because po

Margot POVI had always considered myself a reasonably well-mannered person.Which was probably the only thing stopping me from telling Arian exactly what I thought of him.I swallowed the curse that was already on the tip of my tongue.“I already told you. Go find someone in your weight class. Why lower yourself just to entertain yourself at my expense?”Arian gave a small shrug.“We're not at the point where we can go at each other head-on yet. All's fair in war, right? Besides, what do you expect? He was born eight months before me.”“Just eight months. And somehow, when he was born, the family stars aligned. By the time I came along, apparently it was more like a blessing in disguise.”“Your family drama has nothing to do with me. Aren't you worried I'll tell Rhett Vanderbilt you're talking to me about this?”Arian smiled. &ldquo

  • The Hybrid’s Forced Bond   Chapter 32

Margot POVBy morning, I was exhausted.I yawned so hard on my way into the lab that one intern gave me a concerned look.“Long night?”I nearly walked into the equipment cabinet.I had almost been late to work.Rhett had only come to my room once.Apparently, that was more than enough to destroy my ability to function before nine in the morning.I sat down with a stack of data and forced my brain back into work mode.I was halfway through checking a set of results when I heard voices outside the lab.I glanced toward the glass wall. A group was moving down the hall. People from the research institute.Several executives from the Vanderbilt Group. And then I saw him. Arian.I knew exactly why he was here. The group was touring one of the chemical research labs connected to the corporation's business operations. He had no reason to come into mine. And I would rather not see him. Twice was already too many. The first time, he had challenged me in front of everyone. The second time, he'd
