“You’re letting Hope’s birthday go by without being with her?” my sister Grace asks me.
“Do you not know me at all, Grace?” I ask.
“They left an hour ago,” she says.
“I had to wait to get her present,” I say, lifting up the bag from the jeweler where I had her necklace made.
“Do I get to see it?” she asks.
I pull the box out of the bag and open it.
“Oh, Levi. It’s beautiful and perfect for Hope.”
“I think so. I hope she likes it.”
“She’ll love it. She’d love anything coming from you. What time are you leaving?” she asks.
I look at my watch. “I told Beta Carlos that I’d meet them at the restaurant. It’s at the hotel, so that will be easy. Dinner is at six, which gives me time to shower, change, pack, and still stop for flowers on my way.”
“Good luck, Levi,” she says, reaching out to squeeze my arm. “If things go the way you want them to, even if she doesn’t feel worthy of being mated to you, don’t let her reject you. She doesn’t have to accept you right away, it may take her time to understand that the Moon Goddess doesn’t make mistakes, but as long as she doesn’t reject you, I think she’ll come around.”
My sister and Aunt Angel have the only two wolves, probably the last two wolves ever, who will be blessed by the Moon Goddess herself with a Guardian spirit. It makes them special, stronger, more powerful than normal wolves, and very often, they seem to see or know things that others don’t.
“Do you know something?” I ask her, watching her closely.
“I know Hope and I know you, my brother. Personally, I don’t think there is anyone else in this world who would be a better mate to Hope than you. I know how much you love her. I know you don’t care that she’s a hybrid. Just remember that she may need some time to accept that you are the most perfect man for her. If, of course, I’m right about you being her mate.”
“Well, her scent has certainly gotten stronger lately. I need to get going. Thanks again, Grace.”
“Anytime.”
I shower and pack, then begin making my way to the coastline. Part of the reason that Betas Carlos and Amber brought Hope to the beach was because of her scent. Yes, she has the scent of white spruce trees, a lovely, fresh, foresty scent. But she also smells like the ocean which we assume comes from her polar bear side. She smells like a combination of the ocean and the forest. I find her scent utterly intoxicating. I’ve always enjoyed her scent, but two years ago when I turned eighteen, her scent intensified and Malcolm started acting more possessive of Hope and Qadira, her wolf/bear hybrid. It was my first clue that she and I were mates. Since then, her scent has only become more tantalizing and mouth-watering to me and I have to catch myself so I don’t begin nuzzling her when we’re together. I don’t want to give her any reason to push me away.
I smile as I drive. I can’t wait to hear all about her first day at the beach. I hope that her bear enjoyed the salt water. Hopefully, she’ll let me stay so I can spend the day with her and her family tomorrow.
I stop near the hotel and pick up a bouquet of flowers. My girl isn’t a typical girl, so I don’t get roses. Instead, I get a bouquet that has all different flowers mixed into it.
When I get to the hotel, I mind link Beta Carlos, who lets me know they are already seated in the restaurant. I leave my things, including her necklace in the car and head straight to the restaurant.
I walk in the room and smell her scent immediately. Malcom begins purring softly. He loves her scent as much as I do.
When the waiter walks away from their table, I see her very sensitive nose begin to twitch. When her blue eyes meet mine, it nearly takes my breath away.
I’ve never understood how others could bully Hope. Yes, she’s not a full wolf. Yes, her scent is different than most wolves and she prefers being alone as much or more than being with the pack. But she’s stronger than most wolves, something the packs admire and appreciate. She’s kind, and gentle, especially knowing that she’s part bear. And she’s always been the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life.
I hate that she thinks I wouldn’t be here for her birthday. I know why she wanted to go away. She’s worried about her mate rejecting her. As Malcolm begins pacing in my head, I know that her mate isn’t going to reject her, because I’m her mate. There’s no way I would ever reject such an incredible woman and there’s no way that any woman could smell better to me than she does.
When I kiss her cheek, Qadira begins her deep rumbling purr. The sound is one that can calm me in an instant, or make my body stand at attention ready to show Hope just how much I want her.
I smile and wish her a happy birthday as well, then wait to see if Hope will invite me to stay. If she doesn’t, I’ll give her her birthday present and leave. I won’t force myself into her weekend, but thankfully, she invites me to stay for dinner.
When I sit down across from her, I greet her family. They all knew I was coming, so they aren’t surprised to see me.
“Hey, Levi,” Faith, her younger sister says, grinning.
“Thanks for keeping my secret, Faith,” I say.
“She almost gave it away,” Beta Carlos says, teasing her.
“I can’t believe you’re here,” Hope says.
“I can’t believe you thought I’d miss your birthday. Have I ever missed a birthday?” I ask her.
She smiles her sweet, embarrassed smile and shakes her head no.
The waiter comes over to take our order. I go last, already knowing that I’ll get some sort of steak. Once he’s gone, I focus my attention on Hope.
“Tell me about your day. Did Qadira like the water?” I ask her.
I watch as her face transforms into awe and wonder. It’s so rare to see Hope relaxed enough to just be herself that I find myself completely and totally captivated by her, listening to how much she enjoyed the water.
“Hopefully you’ll stay the night and join us at the beach tomorrow, Levi,” Beta Carlos says.
I look at Hope as the food arrives. She ordered seafood. It’s another thing that makes her different from a true wolf. Bears like seafood, especially fish, more than wolves do.
When the waiter leaves us again, I focus on Hope.
“That’s really up to Hope. It’s her birthday. If you want me to stay, I’ll stay.”
She frowns. “Well, you drove all this way. You can’t turn around and go back tonight.”
“I could, if you would prefer to have this weekend with just your family.”
She shrugs, blushing again. “I consider you my family.”
I take her hand and pull it to my lips, watching her sweet blush darken. “Then I’m staying.”
“Do you have a room, Levi?” Beta Carlos asks.
“No, I haven’t checked with the front desk to see if they have any availability,” I say.
“Oh, don’t worry. Your sister and Alpha Eli upgraded our room to a suite. If nothing else, you can sleep on the pull out couch. We have plenty of space.”
I look at Hope again.
“Of course. Stay with us. It really is a huge suite,” she says.
“Then it’s settled. I’d be happy to crash on your couch.”
HopeWhen I finally let go of Tanya, I look down the hall, but Levi has gone back into his apartment.“Come on. Let’s order pizza and you can tell me all about it,” Tanya says.“How long are you here?” I ask.“As long as you need me. Let’s be honest, we both know I sleep better when you’re around, so I’ll sleep better here and apparently, you need me too, so it’s a win-win,” she says.It feels a bit like a role reversal with her taking charge, ordering pizza, then opening her bag.“I got us a bottle of wine, too. Okay, I got two, because it sounded like you needed it,” she says, going through my kitchen to find a bottle opener and two glasses.Once she’s done, she brings the glasses to the couch and sits beside me, handing me a glass while she tucks her feet underneath her.“So, tell me what happened?” she says, taking a sip of her wine.I stare into my glass and shrug.“Hope, I’m not here to judge. I’m here to help,” Tanya says, reaching out to put her hand on my arm. “Talk to me, sis
LeviI’m pretty sure my heart stopped when Hope told me she was rejecting me. I can’t … the thought of living without her makes me ill.I’m furious with the people who did this to her. I was so close, so CLOSE, to getting her to see how perfect we are together and now, after one morning with a bunch of fucking assholes, we’re back to square one. When Emlyn linked me that Hope had been bullied and was upset, I was already on my way to the packhouse. I’d done my duty for Grace and ducked out early, but now, I’m fucking furious. I’m ready to go back to the old packhouse and challenge every one of those Alphas whose Betas hurt my mate like this.“I can’t face them again, Levi. I can’t. I’ll have to accept Alpha Emerson some other time. I can’t …” she stops as she chokes on her words and her tears start again.“I’ll let Grace and Emerson know,” I tell her, still holding her.I look around, realizing that Hope ran to the place where everything was perfect last night, where WE were perfect.‘
HopeQadira and Malcolm had a great run last night. Both of them love to rough and tumble play and thankfully, Malcolm is one of the few wolves who can handle Qadira’s size and strength. It’s rare that Qadira can just be herself and not worry about hurting another wolf, but Malcolm is a strong Alpha wolf, and he gives just as much as he takes with her. It was good for both of them. Then Levi had taken us to an area that is in between the common areas for the three packs and the edge of the pack border where Safe Haven connects with Canyon Ridge. Out here, the only wolves we run into are patrols, which are easily avoided, and wolves doing what we were doing, which was reconnecting after so long apart.Levi took his time with me, just like he always does. But this time, when his canines extended, he scraped them over my marking spot, sending a wave of pleasure rushing through me.“Do you see how good we are together, Hope? Do you see how good our life could be? You and Qadira are perfect
LeviHope is finally coming home, hopefully for good. She waited until the last possible moment to come home, but I know that’s because Tanya continued to have nightmares. But, today is finally the day.She arrives at our apartment building late in the morning and as soon as she tells me that she’s here, I grab the flowers I bought for her and wait at the elevator. When it dings that it’s reached our floor, my heart starts pounding. It’s been a month since I’ve seen my mate. It’s been much, much too long. When the doors open, she steps out with her luggage and smiles.“Welcome home, beautiful,” I say, trading out her bags for the flowers I bought her.“You always pick the best flowers,” she says, closing her eyes and take a deep breath of their scent. Then she pulls them away and lean in to press her lips to mine.“Hi,” she whispers.“Hi. I’ve missed you,” I whisper back.I walk her to her apartment, knowing she needs to unpack and repack for this weekend. As soon as she opens the door
HopeBy morning, I knew there was no way that Tanya was going to be okay with me leaving her and going home. All night long she’d jolt awake, then begin crying. I held her, let her know she was safe, and let Qadira rumble her deep purr until she calmed down enough to fall back to sleep. In the morning, we were both exhausted, mentally and physically, but I knew she needed to get home, back to the safety of familiar surroundings. After ordering breakfast and saying good morning to her father who looks as exhausted as we do, I leave her with Levi and go find Alpha Liam. I let him know that Tanya needs me and I intend to stay with her for now.“Are you sure that’s what Tanya wants, Hope?”“Even is she doesn’t pay Holstin Enterprises, I need to stay with her, Alpha. She’s my friend and she needs me.”“You know Emerson’s Alpha ceremony is in a few weeks.”“Yes. I’ll make sure I come home for that,” I say, already wondering if Tanya will be mentally healthy enough for me to leave her by then
LeviAfter saying goodnight to the Guardians and Alphas as well as Tanya’s father, Hope, Tanya, and I make our way to their suite. This one isn’t as large as the one they stayed in last time, but I don’t care. Even if the couch is too small for me, which I’m sure it will be, this is twice I've come close to losing Hope. No matter how uncomfortable I am, Malcolm and I will be more comfortable knowing she's safe.I listen as the two women get ready for bed in the other room, with Tanya asking if she can sleep beside Hope. I know Tanya is scared and struggling with what happened in the last twenty-four hours, so I’m not surprised.Hope brings me a pillow and a blanket, then kisses me.“Thank you for being here and thank you for staying here tonight. I know I’ll rest easier with you here,” she says softly.“I’ll always be here if you need or want me, Hope. I hope you realize that.”She turns and looks at the closed door of the bedroom. “I’m going to talk to Alpha Liam. I know our contract
LeviOh goddess she tastes even better than I thought she would. When I feel Hope give in to our kiss, I deepen it, needing to taste more of her, needing to possess her, needing to claim her. I want her to know that I want her, love her, and need her in my life.I have no idea how long the kiss last
HopeI know my family loves me. They’ve always been very clear about that. They love me no matter what. But Levi? Levi understands me. It’s a subtle difference, but it speaks volumes about why the Moon Goddess chose him to be my mate. It also speaks volumes about why I think he’s too good for me.‘H
LeviMy life is perfect. The only thing that would make it more perfect is if Hope would have agreed to let me mark her. But I know my mate. She never expected to be worthy of a mate, even if I knew she was.I carry her out into the water, partly because I want to feel how Qadira responds in the wat
HopeI feel my cheeks flame with embarrassment. It’s one thing to have your first time with someone. It’s quite another for your father to smell the sex on you.Levi, however, is unperturbed. He wraps his arm around me, pulling me against his body. “Hope and I are mates, just like I was hoping we wo
