DERICK'S POV

The morning after the exhibition, I woke up with a plan.

Not the kind of plan that involved blackmail or evidence or press conferences. A simpler one. A better one. For the first time in weeks, I wanted to do something that had nothing to do with survival. Something that was just for us.

DERICK'S POVThe morning after the exhibition, I woke up with a plan. Not the kind of plan that involved blackmail or evidence or press conferences. A simpler one. A better one. For the first time in weeks, I wanted to do something that had nothing to do with survival. Something that was just for us.I slipped out of bed before Ciel woke, careful not to disturb him. He murmured something in his sleep but didn't stir. I pulled on my jacket and walked to the kitchen, where Leo was already sitting with a cup of coffee."You're up early," he said."I need your help."He raised an eyebrow. "With what?""A date."Leo stared at me. Then he laughed. "You want me to help you plan a date?""Is that funny?""A little." He set his cup down. "What do you need?"I told him. A quiet spot by the frozen lake. A basket with food. A blanket. Nothing fancy. Just something real.Leo nodded slowly. "I know a place. It's about a mile from here. Secluded. No one will bother you.""Perfect.""Take the trail b

  • The Ice Between Us    Chapter 52: The Silent Language

DERICK'S POVIt was past midnight, the campus dark and silent around us. The only light came from the moon through the high windows, casting long shadows across the ice. We'd snuck out of the cabin after everyone else had gone to sleep, unable to quiet our minds enough to rest."I can't stop thinking about tomorrow," Ciel said, lacing up his skates on the bench. "The exhibition. The press. Everything.""Me neither." I sat beside him, my own skates already on. "That's why we're here."He looked at me, his gray eyes soft in the dim light. "You know me too well.""I try."We stepped onto the ice together, our blades carving into the frozen surface. The sound echoed through the empty arena, sharp and clean. For a moment, we just skated, no routine, no pressure, just the simple joy of moving together. Then Ciel stopped in the center of the rink and turned to face me."Let's run the finale," he said. "One more time. Just to prove we can.""We've run it a hundred times.""Then once more."I

  • The Ice Between Us    Chapter 51: The Perfect Moment

DERICK'S POVMy mother. The word echoed in my head, hollow and strange. I'd spent my whole life without one, building walls around the empty space where she should have been. My father never spoke of her. The few photographs I'd found were hidden away, locked in drawers I wasn't supposed to open. I'd learned early not to ask questions. Not to want things I couldn't have. And now she was standing in front of me, clapping like she'd just watched a particularly good show."Hello, Derick," she said again. "You were wonderful out there."I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Ciel's hand found mine, his grip steady and warm."Who are you?" I managed."I told you. I'm your mother." She stepped closer, her heels clicking against the concrete. "Elena Blackwood. Though I believe your father had me erased from the family records.""You left.""I was taken from you." Her smile faded, replaced by something harder. "Your father couldn't stand the thought of me influencing you. He said I was too soft, to

  • The Ice Between Us    Chapter 50: The Making of Something Beautiful

DERICK'S POVThe first lift nearly killed me.Not literally, but close enough. Ciel had been patient, explaining the mechanics for the tenth time while I stood on the ice, my legs already burning from two hours of edge work. He made it look effortless when he demonstrated, his body arcing through the air like it weighed nothing. Then he'd land, glide back to me, and say, "Your turn."I'd grab his waist, try to hoist him, and we'd both end up in a heap on the ice."You're thinking too much," Jess called from the boards. "Stop analyzing and just do it.""I am doing it.""You're lifting with your arms. Use your legs. Your core. Everything."I tried again. Ciel jumped. I caught him. For one glorious second, he was airborne, suspended above me, his gray eyes wide with surprise. Then my skate caught an edge, and we went down.He landed on top of me, his elbow in my ribs, his breath warm against my face."You almost had it," he said."I almost died.""Same thing."I laughed, despite the pain

  • The Ice Between Us    Chapter 49: The Fear and the Want

DERICK'S POVWarren's finger hovered over the remote. The rink was silent except for the hum of the old compressor and the distant sound of that engine getting closer. Ciel's hand was cold in mine, his body pressed against my back like he was trying to shield me from what was coming."You have ten seconds," Warren said. "Give me the evidence, and I'll let you walk away. Refuse, and your father and Eli become collateral damage."I could feel Ciel trembling against me. Not from fear. From rage."You're lying," Ciel said. "You wouldn't blow up the cabin. The evidence is in there. You need it."Warren's smile didn't waver. "I don't need the evidence. I need it destroyed. There's a difference."The engine outside grew louder. Headlights swept across the rink windows, cutting through the dim light. Warren's eyes flicked toward the sound, just for a second. That was all I needed.I lunged. My shoulder caught Warren in the chest, sending us both crashing onto the ice. The remote flew from his

  • The Ice Between Us    Chapter 48: No More Pretending

DERICK'S POVThe figure on the ice was gone before I could blink.I stood on the porch, my heart pounding, staring at the empty stretch of frozen lake where someone had been standing just moments before. The sun had dipped below the treeline, casting long shadows across the snow. There was no sign of anyone. No footprints. Nothing."Derick?" Ciel's voice pulled me back. "What is it?"I turned to look at him. His silver hair caught the fading light, his gray eyes searching my face. He looked tired, worn down by everything we'd learned today. But beneath the exhaustion, there was something new. A fire I hadn't seen before."Nothing," I said. "Just thought I saw something."He stepped onto the porch beside me, following my gaze to the lake. "What kind of something?""A person. On the ice. They waved at me."Ciel's expression didn't change, but I saw his jaw tighten. "Warren?""I don't know. They were too far away."He was quiet for a moment. Then he reached out and took my hand. "We'll d
