One month had passed since her date with Ryan, and every night she had the same reoccurring dream.
The dream was dark and mainly consisted of running through rugged unknown terrain from giant grey wolves under the moon’s watchful stare.
Last night her dream changed, and she saw a giant white wolf run amongst the grey flock. The white wolf separated from the pack and followed her, and together they ran through an old-growth forest.
Her feet sunk deep into the soggy undergrowth as she darted between the black centuries-old trees with their decrepit and knotty limbs reaching for her in the darkness. Their bark was rough with raised ridges and lumps of wet moss; draped their protruding web of roots. The essence of the earth flowed around her from every sentient being in the forest.
They stopped in front of a wall of dense iridescent coloured fog. The grainy wall seemed to pulsate to the beat of Nueva's racing heart.
A low terrifying growl seeped out from behind the misty layers.
The white wolf turned its beautiful large head, locked its sapphire blue eyes with Nueva’s, and spoke in a soft, melodic voice.
“Nueva, the primordial Ice wolf. You and only you can break the frost demon’s curse.” The white wolf broke their eye contact and turned her head towards the glistening fog.
Nueva tried to speak, but no words would leave her mouth. She had so many questions, but she couldn’t ask any in her dream state.
The white wolf backed away a few steps and spoke again.
“Open your soul Nueva and let the transformation begin.” The wolf's long snout lifted towards the night sky, and a deep harrowing howl emerged, echoing among the trunks of the dark trees.
Before Nueva had a chance to resist, her head lifted towards the moon, and a gut-wrenching howl gurgled out from deep inside.
Like the many other nights, she woke up covered in sweat. But, this time, instead of feeling hot, she shivered in the chilled morning air. She turned over on the soft underlayer, and something stung her painfully on the hip.
She sat up abruptly when she realised that the soft sheets were, in fact, not sheets and that she was lying naked in the wood on a bed of moss and pine needles under an old tree.
She suffocated a scream with both hands. Her brain was in tumult and all of her senses washed over her like a bucket of cold water.
“Where am I? she whispered under ragged sniffles.
The early morning dew covered the grounds in a silky grey mist that seemed to blush as the sun rose slowly over the tall shadowed pine trees stretching towards the sky in the small clearing.
The dense and dusky woodland extended deep into the darkness in every direction around her, fading any light trying to seep through the tangled foliage and turning it into a strange, dark and quiet place.
Mud and dirt, cuts and scrapes covered every inch of her body; with aching muscles and feet blackened as if she had never worn shoes a day in her life, she stumbled to her feet.
She picked up a fallen pine tree branch and used it to cover up her naked front, closed her eyes and stood silent for a moment. Then, as she concentrated, she could hear the humming of cars in the distance over the sound of the awakening forest.
Nueva usually found the woods to be her refuge, but the unfamiliar sounds of rustling from the animals within it made her feel uneasy.
It took her a good hour of walking down a needle-covered path; twigs and leaves snapped and crunched into dust under her bare feet on the forest thick, springy carpet.
She thanked God when she finally stumbled out on the familiar Forest Hill track. Nueva ran home from there, hiding behind bushes, bins, and mailboxes, anything to not be caught naked in her neighbourhood.
She snuck through the front door quietly as a mouse. The house smelled warm and inviting with the robust scent of freshly made coffee.
Miranda called out from the kitchen, “That was an early run even for you.”
“God, that woman has elephant hearing”, She muttered to herself.
“I know, mum, I couldn’t sleep, and it was such a nice morning for an early run.” She answered quickly on her way up the stairs.
At the top of the stairs stood her scrawny little brother Asher newly waken with his big puffy brown hair on ends.
“But, why?" he started when he saw her naked with only a tiny pine tree branch in front of her.
She gestured not a word, or I will kill you, to her confused brother, who nodded in response.
After scrubbing herself in the shower not far from the way of an insane person, she got dressed in a loose, comfortable white t-shirt and black leggings before walking down to join her mum in the kitchen for a big cup of coffee.
The dining area was one of Nueva's favourite places and the heart of their old house. The large wooden kitchen table was situated in a nook with floor to ceiling windows, and the natural light flowed in with a near-magical glow.
"Mum, have you ever sleepwalked?" she casually asked as they sat opposite each other eating their peanut butter toast.
Miranda’s eyebrows shot up briefly. “Hm, no, I don’t think so. Why, do you ask?”
“Oh, no particular reason. I just wondered, that's all.” Nueva took another sip of her foamy almond latte before she added. “If a person was sleepwalking, how would they know, and can they stop themselves from doing it?”
“What’s up with the twenty questions?” Miranda laughed.
“Nothing, I am just curious.”
“Well, from the little I know, sleepwalking is more common than you think.” Miranda’s face turned into her serious mum face. “And doing quiet, calming activities before bed, such as reading books or soaking in a warm bath, can help people from sleepwalking.”
“So, it’s pretty normal then?” Nueva released a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
“Yes, it can happen from being stressed or fatigued.”
“That makes perfect sense since I haven’t had a decent sleep in forever,” she thought, and that fact calmed her slightly.
Grim and Asher walked in, half-awake in matching pyjamas, interrupting their conversation.
“Good morning, my little sleepyheads” Miranda smiled and got up to get the boys their breakfast.
Asher glanced curiously at Nueva, and she frowned back at him and mouthed, “not a word”
Grim watched them both before shouting, “Mum, Nueva and Asher got a secret!”
"No, we don't, and shut up, you little jerk", Nueva hissed between clenched teeth.
“Oh, do tell”, Miranda exclaimed in a melodic tone as she came back with two bowls of cereal.
Asher grabbed the bowl from Miranda and shoved the cereals into his mouth. His eyes were locked on his food, taking his sister’s words about certain death seriously.
“It’s nothing, mum; Grim is just being silly.” Nueva got up and took her coffee mug with her.
"I am going to head over to Evie's house. Is it OK if I borrow your car?" She swept the last of her delicious coffee. “I won’t stay too long,” gurgling out the last words.
Miranda looked at her daughter; her gaze was warm and full of love.
“Sure, just drive safe.”
“Don’t worry, I always do. See you after.”
Nueva grabbed the keychain from the wooden benchtop and smiled when she saw the silver “Drive safe” pendant dangling next to the car key.
It was still early, especially for a Saturday morning, but she couldn’t wait to talk to her friends about what had happened last night. Nueva used the 15 minute’s drive to Evie’s parent’s house to relax and clear her head. She was deep in thoughts when suddenly, a bright voice spoke inside her head, clear as day. “Hello Nueva, I am Eira” “What the hell?” she cried out in the empty car and swerved to the side of the road onto gravel, creating a large grey dust cloud. She sat quietly in the car. Her fingers squeezed the steering wheel, and her chest rose rapidly as she tried to control her breathing by expanding her small lungs with air. “I am so sorry, Nueva; I didn’t mean to scare you.” The voice was softer and somehow calmed her frazzled nerves. “Who are you? Am I going mad?” she sniffled and cupping her hands over her distorted face. “No, you are not going mad, my dear Nueva. I am your wolf.” “My what now?” “Your wolf form” The voice sounded brighter and had a cheerful tone.
Nueva left Evie’s house feeling a bit better; talking to your friends indeed is the best therapy. She drove straight home and locked herself in her mum's study with a new book she had been eager to read. The study was bright with white painted timber walls and a large bay window. Underneath the window next to a dark brown desk was a weathered old grandpa chair with a big soft Moroccan style pillow. Nueva loved curling up here with a book whenever she needed some time to herself. She had just gotten comfy when her mobile phone started vibrating on top of the desk. An unknown number flashed on the phone’s display. She didn’t usually answer unknown numbers but slid her finger across the display and put the phone to her ear when the mobile phone rang for the third time.“Hello”She could hear someone breathing on the other end.“Hello, who is this?” again no answer; Nueva decided to hang up
She met Evie and Mira at The Base shopping mall. It was still hot outside, but with the sun lower position, it had taken away some of the intensity of the heat.Nueva had made an effort to get ready and put on mascara and lip gloss. She wore a light-yellow cotton dress that reached her middle thighs and brown leather sandals.A high ponytail held her soft blond locks in place.Mira greeted her with a loud whistle that echoed throughout the shopping mall wide aisles.“Wow, look at you, girlfriend,” she called out as she and Evie came towards her.“So, hot” Evie giggled and pretended to put out a matchstick against her skin.“Eh, stop”, Nueva mumbled, embarrassed, and her cheeks turned pink under her newly tanned skin.“I can’t even remember last time I saw you in a dress?” Mira continued raising both her eyebrows and shoulders in unison.“Not important”, Nue
Nueva couldn’t stop thinking of Gray. It was just something about him that captivated her. Of course, his incredibly good looks didn’t help, and every time she thought about his deep laugh or winsome smile, her core clenched, sending pleasurable waves throughout her body. This attraction was different from what she had felt for Ryan. She wanted all of Gray, and the thought of that made her blush. But she couldn’t help it the more she thought about him, the more she wanted him. His face seemed printed onto her cornea as a permanent fixture. One night she woke up from one of her nightmares, and Gray’s piercing silver-coloured eyes flashed in front of her face, kick-starting the familiar feeling of pleasure rushing through her body. Nueva couldn't help her hands starting to wander across her body under the duvet as the arousal grew. She moved her fingers slowly over her flat stomach before circling them over the warm skin towards her s
White Creek pack territory fifteen weeks earlier. The road through the White Creek territory was like a flowing body of smooth black, treating any driver to an effortless ride into town. On each side grew wildflowers in the thousands colouring the surroundings in bright shades of the rainbow. There were small houses tucked into the flourishing nature, belonging to the pack’s members. At first look, you would never know that this pack have been under a curse for the last several hundred years. A curse that is blocking the White Creek Alphas from finding their true mate and resulting in weakening the bloodline over the years.Alpha Gray steered his black pickup truck of the smooth asphalt down a beaten dirt track leading to his grandma’s small timber cottage. He had always loved spending time here with his grandma, seeking refuge from his parent’s constant bickering. She had called him earlier and said she nee
Ryan's POVThe school bell rang out its high-pitched clang with repeated hammering on the bell.Ryan signed as the bells sound meant a moment of rest from concentrating, listening and taking notes. He grabbed his books and headed out the classroom door. His two closest friends, Harry and Flynn, waited by his locker."Let's grab lunch", Flynn called out and tapped the green metal door with a closed fist before moving to the side to let Ryan put his books away in the narrow storage compartment."Sure", Ryan started before getting interrupted by his mobile phone ringing."I need to take this", he mumbled after fishing the phone out of his jeans pock
Nueva wiped away the condensation on the bathroom mirror. Her eyes twinkled with excitement for the night ahead in the blurry reflection.A week of planning, preparing and setting up was done, and it was finally time to enjoy the fruit of the labour. She gently patted herself dry with a soft towel, ensuring not to mess up her already styled hair. The hairdresser had insisted on a soft Dutch front row braid and glamorous curls to enhance her facial features. She focused her makeup on her eyes, painting a strong winged eyeliner combined with a sparkling shade of silver eyeshadow to make her blue eyes pop.Nueva kept the rest of her makeup natural with only a sweep of pink across her cheeks and a dab of clear lip gloss.
She turned around, and immediately, her jaw came unhinged. Behind her stood no other than Alpha Gray. "Do you mind if I cut in?" he asked in his dark rich voice. His argent eyes flashed dangerously. Derek was about to protest when he noticed Nueva's captivated gaze. So, he stepped to the side and watched her practically melt into Alpha Grays's arms. Alpha Gray towered over her, looking sharp in a dark tailored two-piece suit. The white shirt was unbuttoned at the top, and she could see his well-defined chest straining under the silky fabric. He pulled her into his hard chest and wrapped his strong arms around her lower waist. The music around them seemed to fade into the background over the beat of her raising heart. Her brain was tumultuous as his musky scent of summer rain and pear filled her nostrils. "What is he doing here?" Nueva stumbled; her legs felt weak from his masculine presence. His arms tightened around her immediately, holding
