Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
In the blink of an eye, 15 days passed. When Alice was released, she sent me a text message.

[You think dating some old man to disgust me is going to work? It's useless. Your sick mom is about to die, and her biggest wish before she goes is to see you get married. If she finds out you're deliberately with that old man, she'll probably die even faster.]

Alice was right. Mom was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and her condition worsened this year. The doctors said she had at most two years left to live.

Her greatest wish was to see me married, but not to just any random guy. If she ever found out I chose an old man just to prove a point, she would probably drop dead on the spot.

Alice knew exactly where my weak spot was, so she was using it to threaten me.

Not long after receiving that message, Mom called me, demanding to know if I was really dating an old man.

I assured her, "Of course not! Even if I never get married, I wouldn't date an old man. You know what kind of person I am, right? Don't let people trick you so easily. Anyone can say a few words and get you to believe them, but where's the proof?"

Since Alice had no evidence, it was just her word against mine. Hence, Mom was quickly reassured.

Then, I told her all about how Alice stole Colin, adding some extra details for effect. Mom immediately deleted Alice's contact information and took my side.

That said, I really was not getting any younger. My career was stable, and I really was at the age where I should think about settling down and having kids.

However, my work kept me busy, and I did not have time to meet men actively. Even so, I could not spend my whole life single just to guard against Alice.

So, I decided to go straight to a matchmaking service and found a matchmaker named Martha Lowe. I explained my requirements and asked her to help me find a suitable man.

Martha worked very quickly and soon found me an appropriate match, Brayden Cooke. Since we were both busy with work, we simply exchanged numbers, just chatting and getting to know each other.

There was actually another reason for this approach: I wanted to see if Alice's so-called system could work when I only knew someone online without meeting them in person.

After chatting for nearly a month, Brayden seemed normal, so we agreed to meet face-to-face. We chose a public park for the first meeting.

Martha and Brayden arrived before me.

I just got off the subway when I heard Alice's voice behind me. She was everywhere, like a ghost that refused to leave me alone.

My face darkened. "What are you doing here?"

She replied smugly, "I know you've got a blind date today, so of course I came to check it out. Didn't I tell you? I have a system. No matter who you date, I'll always know. Why won't you believe me?"

I sneered. "Don't tell me you're about to say Brayden's already fallen for you."

Alice nodded with certainty. "Of course. Why else would I bother showing up today? I want you to finally give up. You'll never win against my system. You're not worthy."

For once, curiosity got the better of me, and I asked, "Why do you even care if I get married? Me staying single doesn't benefit you at all."

Her eyes turned wild. "You dare ask me that? If it weren't for you, I'd already be married to Ronan Shaw, raising our kids together! Since I can't have the happiness I deserve, why should you get it?!"

At that moment, I finally understood why she hated me so much. However, I did not have time to argue with her because it was almost time for my appointment with Martha.

Being late for a first meeting would not look good.

When she saw me start walking away, Alice quickly followed.

After seeing clearly who was sitting on the bench, her expression changed dramatically, and she grabbed my neck viciously.

"Lauren! You set me up! I'm going to kill you!"

It was only then that the men finally realized each other's existence. Their so-called soulmate turned out to be a woman juggling them all at once, and there was no way they could accept it. "You lying bitch! How dare you toy with my feelings!"They were so furious that they rushed forward and started beating Alice up. She was no match for all of them at once, and they pinned her to the floor without giving her any chance to fight back."I was wrong, I was wrong! Stop hitting me! It's all my fault! Lauren, save me! I really know I messed up. Please, save me!"Alice called out to me for help, hoping I would come to her aid, but I just watched coldly and even took a few steps back. It was the police who finally pulled those men away and rescued Alice. Although she got beaten up, I was determined to hold her accountable for planting that spyware. The wedding turned into a complete farce. Still, Mom did not die from shock like she had in my past life. I stayed with her through her

I said, "I kept wondering how you managed to steal all those men away from me. You said you had a system, but even a three-year-old wouldn't believe that story, so I was certain you must have installed some kind of listening device on me."But I searched my entire house and found nothing. I even went back to my hometown, and you still knew. I didn't tell you about my wedding, yet you showed up anyway. It was like you had a tracking device hidden on me, and then I finally realized where you planted it."My phone fell into the pool that day because of you, and you replaced it with an identical one. That was when you installed the spyware, right? These days, nobody goes without a phone; we practically carry them 24/7. With that app, you could monitor my every move."The moment I felt something was off, I asked someone to check my phone. Sure enough, there was a spyware app inside. It not only tracked my location but also stole all my data and messages. It even copied every single text

Isaac immediately called 911 without hesitation. Seeing his determination, most of the people in the audience believed what I said and thought someone was deliberately using a fake video to cause trouble. When the person who made the video saw that things escalated and the police were coming, she immediately emerged from the crowd below."Don't call the police! This video is real! Don't call the police!" Alice stormed onto the stage. When everyone saw her face, they instantly recognized her as the woman in the video. She looked at Isaac and pretended to be heartbroken. "You bastard! How dare you do this and then deny it? Are you even human?!"Then, she shouted to the people below. "Tell me, everyone, would I ever joke about something as serious as my reputation? I'm a woman, how could I possibly put my own innocence at risk like this?!" She continued, "Look at them! The groom cheated on me with my best friend, and my so-called best friend stole my boyfriend. They're trying to de

One day, I was at work when I suddenly got a call from the hospital. Mom suddenly collapsed on the street and was rushed in for emergency treatment. After hanging up, I immediately asked my manager for time off and prepared to rush back to my hometown. Oddly, all the tickets back home were completely sold out, and there was no way to get on the waitlist anytime soon. Since I could not drive and renting a car to drive back was unrealistic, I was at my wits' end.Just as I was panicking, Isaac reached out to me on his own. He said he could drive me back. Nevertheless, this was not the time to argue or refuse, so I got into his car right away. On the way, I calculated the cost, including the gas money and the wages he lost from taking off work. Then, I transferred the amount to him. By the time I got to the hospital, Mom's condition stabilized, and she was no longer in immediate danger. Even so, I knew that after fighting this disease for so many years, she did not have much time

Isaac Williams and I walked out of the park, and I smiled at him gratefully. "Thank you for coming to help me today, but I'm not really in the mood to think about marriage right now. I'm sorry."Mom introduced Isaac to me. He was the son of a patient who shared a hospital room with her when she was hospitalized. He happened to work in the same city, and after Mom learned about him, she decided to introduce him to me.However, I was so busy thinking about this stupid system that I did not consider going on any real dates, so I told Mom not to worry about it. I did not expect her to ignore what I said and exchange numbers with Isaac instead. She sent him my information and even started chatting with him on my behalf. It was not until yesterday that Mom told me I was meeting him today. Since she already made the plan for me, I just decided to set the location at that same park to catch Alice off guard. Nonetheless, I was not ready to seriously commit to anyone because I did not unc

I burst out laughing. "I picked him especially for you. He suits you perfectly. What do you think?"Alice looked like she wanted to tear me to pieces. "You bitch! You set me up on purpose! I'll kill you!"Our fight immediately drew attention from people nearby. Martha and Brayden, who were sitting on a bench, rushed over to break us apart. However, the moment he saw Alice's face, he was captivated. He grabbed her arm and said, "Stop it, please!"Alice recoiled like his touch was filthy, jerking her hand free. "Get lost! Don't touch me! Look at yourself! You think you're worthy of me?" Then, she pointed at me and cursed. "Lauren, do you actually think you can deal with me by finding this ugly freak? Idiot! I'd like to see what happens when your mom finds out you're with a one-eyed man!" When I first went to Martha, I only requested her to find me someone ugly, the uglier the better. Even a homeless person from the street would do.It was the first time Martha heard such a re
